I have a P-40 Covert that has been running flawless. During a shooting session the other day the slide kept locking back before the magazine was empty. It did the same thing today. This is the first time I have had this problem. Any of you guys have an idea of what could be causing this? I haven't done anything different or changed anything so I am kind of puzzled.
Thanks

If you have not changed the type of ammo you are using, my guess would be that your slide stop spring may have gotten bent during cleaning.

This picture is from an early post in Greg's thread (http://kahrtalk.com/kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1612) in the tech section that describes this and similar issues and fixes. You could do worse than making yours look like his and following his recommendations on retaining screw tightness.

Let us know if this does not solve the issue . . . and I am certain you will get other suggestions even before you try this one, but Greg's advice has been excellent, so start with this, please. :)

TucsonMTB as a matter of fact I did change ammunition. I bought two boxes of Federal 180 gr FMJFN. It's the first time I have ever used it in this pistol. I haven't had any problems with Winchester White Box or Hydra-Shoc's. Do you think this could be my problem? I think I will try the WWB again before I start working on the slide stop. Thanks for your help.

I'm glad that you mentioned this! I just bought my P40 last week, and have been experiencing the same issue. I understand that mine is brand new, yet to be broken in, but it seems a bit weird to me. With only 100 rounds fired it's hard to tell.. I've gone with all the same "Remington UMC 180 gr." rounds. (Walmart bought) Mine has done the same thing with locking back while still loaded. On top of that, my slide has remained forward once all rounds were fired. I've noticed that the times the slide stays forwards, the magazine is already released, probably convincing the firearm there are more to go.. (Being new to this gun, I feel the position of my hands might just be hitting the release. If that's the case, then why does it always seem to happen on only the final round?)

I hope all of what I said makes sense. All input will be great! Thanks.

Tucson has the answer. Unlesur grip has changed or maybe rounds hitting the inside of the slide stop lever, and it just started doing it, I would look at that little spring. quite possably it got bent out of shape when reassemblig a quick way to solve the question of your thumb maybe hitting that release is to shoot it left handed. If u duplicate the issue,u have now eliminated that possable. For me I would eliminatge the obvious things first before gong to that little springhy. grip, rounds hitting insde etc.

magazine is getting release only two things can cause that.

One is ur hitting the release and not knowing it. or the mag release is not fully engaging intot eh magazine and giving u completelockup. Take ur magazine out of thegun and now look at the right side. see where the back side of that release button is. It should be even with the grip, perfeclty smooth, now insert the magazine and recheck that side. It should be exactly the same way. If it is sticks out a tad that is a no no. Ur mag button is out of spec in that case and I would call kahr and ask for a new one. There is a nice photo tutorial on the kahr tech section on how to install it, takes 5 minutes. It is a no brainer. also ask for a new mag spring to.

If kahrs tells u they will send u the new parts then with the magazine u have now, just slam it inb a few dozen times to see if maybe there is a burr on the mag release button and it might take that burr away. U have nuttin to loose as a new button is on the way.

Thanks for all the help guys. I checked it over, and everything looks ok. So I tried it today using hydra-shok ammunition with no problems at all. I used both the 5 & 6 round mags. This time I payed a little more attention to how I was holding and firing the gun. So maybe I was hitting the slide stop or the mag. release. Also I didn't realize it when I had the trouble with it locking back it was a little dry. So this time I lubed it up real good. So far so good....... Oh yeah I did have some time to shoot my CW-9 and CM-9, and both were a pleasure. Not one malfunction at all. I think Kahr has really gotten on the ball, they make great little pistols.
