Due to an upcoming trip to NJ where we all know HP ammo is forbidden, I was looking for a change from my normal Federal Premium LE 124 gr. +P EFMJ.

I ordered 100 rds. of the Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr. FlexLock non +P # 90236 to test thru my PM9.

The advertised velocity from Hornady from an unknown barrel length is 1010 fps.

Out of the Kahr 3.1" barrel I got the following this morning.

970.5 fps/6 rds.
966.8 fps/6 rds.

Not great but not too bad either.

Function thru the Kahr was 100% for 50 rds. This is what I was most concerned about.
Accuracy was excellent out to 15 yds.
Recoil quite mild.

The +P loading is the same weight bullet @ 1110 fps #90226.

I think I'm going to order 100 rds. of the +P when we get back from our trip and run those thru the Kahr also.

The Federal Premium LE 124 gr. +P EFMJ were a little quicker than the Hornady.

Function 100% but I already knew this.

1014.8 fps/6 rds.
1008.1 fps/6 rds.

For those of you living in or familiar with NJ laws, are any groups actively trying to change the minds or the enlightened legislature of NJ. My son just moved to NJ and I'm appalled at how restrictive their laws are. Hope there are some moves afoot to get things changed. :frown:

I was in contact by phone with the NJSP Det. Sgt. in charge of the Firearms Unit a couple of weeks ago.

Our conversation centered upon the use of HP ammo by retired LEOs under HR218.

In 2010 Obama signed revision to the law which allowed LEOs to carry HP ammo in those states that had restrictions or laws forbidding that use.

The NJSP will NOT budge on this referring evereything back to the NJ AGs office and that office will not recognize the rervisions to HR 218. :32:

So, retired LEOs or out of state LEOs visiting NJ must find some other type of ammo to carry while in NJ.

At least you can carry in NJ. Anytime I have to cross the bridge from PA I have to leave mine at home. It's ridiculous.

I was always curious about NJ's HP law ...

Forgive me if I'm wrong , but hollow point rounds expand upon impact to stop them/stop the intended target ...

NJ would rather have people shoot FMJ's that could possibly kill multiple people in one shot due to over penetration ?

Jim I would recommend Speer Gold Dots in 124gr over Hornady CD.

Hornady is very over-hyped.

don't you know? HP's are evil cop killers. They hit and expand to 3 times the diameter of the moon. They take out people that haven't been born yet.
Don't try looking for logic in NJ's gun laws. It's not about logic, it's about pandering to the antis.

I guess you skipped over the part where I said I was going to NJ and carrying HP ammo is out of the question, even for a retired LEO which I am.

I normally carry the Speer 124 gr. +P GD, the short barrel load, in my PM9 but again...that won't fly in NJ.

Note: I originally meant to say the Hornady Critical Duty ammo, not the Critical Defense.

I have 100 rds. of the Critical Duty 135 gr. +P load coming today. I want that 135 gr. bullet over 1,000 fps. The non +P load would not do that in the Kahr 3.1" bbl.

For those who are legally able to carry in NJ, I've read of some who carry hollow points and some who don't. Depends on how they want to roll given their own personal assessment of the legal requirements and risks, in light of federal and NJ laws.

Hollow points are perfectly legal in NJ, they are just heavily restricted in terms of where you can have them. They are OK at home and at the range. If you commit a crime and have them in your possession, they will be an add-on charge against you.

They are sold in every NJ gun shop I have been in.

For what it's worth, when I fly out of Newark airport with firearms & ammo, I transport a decent hollow-point substitute, such as Hornady CD, Cor-Bon Pow'rball, or Federal EFMJ. If there are any questions I can avoid any ignorant hysteria that way.

Best of luck.

Maybe it's an efficiency plan to reduce the effects of lead in the environment ...

I think if you are just passing through NJ, then federal law protects your gun and ammo as long as it's in a locked container in the trunk or as far away from driver access as possible. If you are visiting there, first I have to ask, what's wrong with you? LOL, there is no reason to visit Jersey, except Atlantic City. I was there back in the 90's, and that is a weird town, it looks like WWII was fought everywhere in the town, except it gets a little nicer right outside the casino and boardwalk areas. Saw some pictures of Detroit in my email today. They looked pretty similiar to what I saw in Atlantic City. It's sad what's happening to our great cities. Motown is starting to look like Bagdhad. I guess it sounds like it too these days. I have no idea, just the impression I get from reading comments from residents and visitors. I did see on TV, that there were still some nice spots out in the suburbs for those that were willing to work and make a living.

I will disagree with you about no reason for visiting NJ!

My wife and I have a very good reason for visiting NJ, our three children, their spouces and 8 grandchildren. :D

We will also head up to NH to visit with my Brother and his wife for a few days.

Back to my PM9...it will travel with us loaded with the Hornady 135 gr. +P FlexLock Critical Duty.

FWIW, if there's one place that you definitely need a gun in NJ it's Atlantic City if you venture any more than a block or so off the boardwalk. ;)
