1st range report on new Sig p220

Finally found a somewhat obscure indoor range near here that's 3/4 active military training contractor (formerly Blackwater) which opens it's range when no training is going on. Very professional and helpful staff and only $20/hour.

So took the Sig P220 and the also an unfired Glock G19 Gen4 to try.
I'm very impressed with the Sig's SRT (short reset trigger) which makes rapid
fire target sighting a dream. 80 rounds of Magtech 230 gr. on the new gun, NO prep, out of box, load and shoot.. Zero problems.
G19, same deal,No prep, straight out of plastic wrap, 150 rounds of various range fodder FMJ 115 gr. No problems.. none of the "fires spent brass at your eyes at 100 MPH" crap you hear of on the web either.
Both have easy recoil, highly accurate and fun to shoot.
Being that I get Glocks absurdly low LEO/MIL price of $399/gun, I'm seeing a few more on my wish list soon.

Nice to hear the Glock gen 4 isn't spraying your face with brass.
I have a P220/45 and a P239/357 myself.
Had SRT kits installed on both guns along with trigger jobs.
The DA is now 8.5 lbs on the P220 and 7.0 lbs on the P239.

The P220 is the first .45 I've owned since My Govt issued 1911 made by Remington so many years ago. Nothing against 1911's but the Sig P220 with SRT is light years ahead in terms of comfort and use.
I'm also finding new respect for Glocks. They may not be pretty, but they sure are shooters!

SRT is for fast follow-up shots.
It will do nothing for the long DA first pull.
Get a trigger job.

I have a SIG P226 Elite with the SRT, and it is sweeeeet...what a difference from the non-SRT models. But yes that first DA pull is a monster.

It is, but that's a safety I can live with. On the other hand, you can sort of throw off that first shot and follow-up quickly with 2 through 9 :D

The trigger job has my P239 DA at 7.0 lbs
and feels much like my tuned S&W DA revolvers.
I'm thinking it might be fine with the first shot.
Waiting on my Bar-Sto ported barrel for some extensive range work and find out.
Emailed them to verify the ramp and chamber have been opened for HPs.

The P220, even with an action job, is still 8.5 lbs DA.
That's not bad, same as my S&W 640-1.
But the much newer P239 DA is way more glassy and revolver like.

I like to run a box of shells lowering the hammer drop safety
after every shot for DA every time.
That seems to help with accuracy for the first shot.

I have had many SIG's since it became my favorite Manufacturer in 1980. Currently, I only have a 1995 German Nickel P220 and a 1911 C3. I can't remember ever having a problem with a SIG except a 1980 German P6 that didn't like HP's. Of course, being a European pistol, it wasn't designed to shoot HP's. It did handle Remington GS's though.

In the last few years, I have switched to another German company, HK, because I am used to a manual safety and HK's have them. I like to carry them cocked and locked like a 1911.

Congrats on the P220, it is a great choice in a 45. It's one of the best pistols ever IMO. I'm curious as to why you wouldn't clean and lube a new pistol before taking it to the range. I've seen brand new pistols that appeared to not have a drop of oil or grease on the rails. I worked at a gun shop in the 80's and found a new 1911 that had a good size piece of a cotton patch in the barrel. I clean and lube all new guns just as a safety precaution.

Sort of a reaction to the elaborate Kahr Kabuki Dance, henceforth known as the KKD. Before I fired it I ran a bore light and high intensity inspection lamp in and about the gun and saw no visible FOD. Worked like a charm. Same with the new G19/Gen4.
Today the wife got her CT CCW permit and I took her to a local range in Newington. Using decent ammo, not the cheapest range fodder, I shot a 1.5 inch grouping at 25 feet. Wife is not pleased with the lust in my eyes for the P220......

They say I might end up with some fail to fires because of a light strike on the primer.
How long ago was your trigger job and have you had any problems?

I've ran about 400+ rounds of Winchester and Federal LE HPs through the P220 without a single light strike.
The trick is finding a good gunsmith to do the work.
Of my eight handguns seven have trigger jobs.
I've shot literally cases of ammo through those guns with ZERO light strikes.

The only gun I've got without a gunsmith tuned action is my MK40 Elite.
And that baby came tuned from the factory IMHO.

Oh, I almost forgot, TopGunSupply has Sig OEM SRT kits.
A trigger job is a great time to upgrade your older gun to a Short Reset Trigger. I Did.

They might smooth out some parts but IMO u will never notice what they do, unless u just get creepy kahr which is very rare,as therir trigger system is just so damn simple and there fore smooth as butter.. They could drop in a 5# striker spring and never tell u and u wouldthink that smitty could walk on water. Just sayin:behindsofa:
