I'm looking for some ideas to build a target stand. Since I have a car, I'm trying to make something that would easily fit into the trunk and not be too heavy.
Any ideas on what to use, or where to buy an inexpensive one?

I've got two ex wives that should work out great!
Either one should fit in your trunk.
The second one you can drag or tie to the roof.
PM me for addresses...

This isn't a really good picture but this is what I built from a copy of what my gun club uses.
Lay two 2x4s flat.
Lay two 2x4s on edge.
Sandwich in four pieces of 1x2s as spacers between the on edge 2x4s.
Leave two 2" gaps where you want the 1x2 uprights to be placed
I used decking screws to tie these all together.
Lay the on edge 2x4s across the two flat 2x4s and tie them all together with decking screws from the bottom.
Use two 1x2s as the uprights that fit into the gaps.
My upright spacing is for IPSC targets.
I also created a third gap closer in to narrow the upright width to attach paper target
I hope this helps, John

i saw these folding stands recently at the range and am ordering a set for myself. they hold standard pine strapping (cheap) and you just staple a piece of cardboard to the wood. pretty easy and the guy pulled the whole setup out of a nissan sentra's trunk.

$ 35.00 ea. + shipping is too steep for me. We use five stands to practice multiple target hits and shooting while moving.
We also had non folding metal target stands like those. They were too light. We had to stake the feet down so that a little wind didn't blow the stand over.

I've seen some made out of PVC pipe. Very light and portable. Going to make a few when I get a chance

PVC is your friend when it comes to target holders. I made my first one last year and added a second a few weeks ago. Shopping list and instructions are here. http://mousegunaddict.blogspot.com/2011/06/cheap-and-easy-target-holder.html
I've assembled all the stuff for my target stand version 2, but it's been so freaking hot out in the garage that I can't get out there and construct them. When I do get around to making them, I'll add that to the blog. The V2 stands will be more trunk friendly, less prone to wind toppling, and hopefully staple and clamp free. Even with all my upgrades, they should be way less than $45.

I was able to make two bases and seven 36" uprights from one twin size box spring my wife tried to throw away. just get some scrap boards, a saw, and a few nails, not hard to come up with something that works for you

Here's one that's similar to what Ljutic posted except it uses disposable wood slats for holding the actual target. Better to replace when they get shot up.

I made two of these and love them. The only thing is they can blow over outside in a strong gust of wind. Probably could be fixed by filling the lower section with sand but I usually can find something to lay across the base to hold it. Glue everything except the vertical pvc pieces that the wood slats slide into. It's light and will easily fit in a decent sized trunk.

I made one from this site http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu24.htm
Instead of pvc for sides, which may crack or break when it gets hit, this uses wood furring and are easily replaced if/when you need to.
You staple a cardboard backing to the wood furring then tape your targets to the backing.
Breaks down flat and easily carried.

I made a portable target stand from PVC pipe that was inexpensive and light weight.

I use leftover political signs. The wire yard signs with the "plastic cardboard" work great with a target taped to it.
Kind of green too... Recycled.:D

There you go, They work great, especially the one Tinman has...:D
Just wait till the elections been over for a few weeks and pick-up the losers leftovers. At that point you are performing a community service...
Here's hoping that there are plenty of abandoned examples of the tinman's signage come December.;)

I finally got one made and it worked great, until the one vertical support got hit with a .45 acp. I used a collapsible lawn chair, the kind that fits in a bag, I cut the backing off exposing the metal supports and slipped 9" sections of 3/4" pvc over it and used sheet metal screws to secure them to the poles on the chair. From there I used another old chair that I dismantled and placed the 3' metal section in the PVC. Used larger binder clips to hold the cardboard in place. It all collapsed down and fit right back into the transport bag.
I would post a pic but my "posting rules" wont allow me to post attachments.

Fell free to reopen this thread when you get to 30 posts and can do pictures. This subject comes up all the time and it will be appricated when you do.
As a side note here. To inspire a bit of fun with kids I have an old wire frame that was a poltical sign from years ago. It is a heavy wire (1/4in) bent into a simple U shape. I push it into the ground about 25yds out from the line. Then we take empty soda cans, bend the tab up and loop a long rubberband thru the tab. Fill the can up with some water, and loop the cans across the top of the U. Mine will hold about five cans at a time.
The kids have a blast hitting the can, seeing the water spill out and hearing the "tink".
Clean-up is easy and ten soda cans will last a couple of boxes of .22s. If you have kids your teaching to shoot, give it a try.

Hmmm, I see a midnight search and accumulate run coming soon....
But only cause I'm interested in the signs content....

That's a wonderful idea. Heck a lot of adults would like this interactive target too. :D

I'm sure you are just joking.
Reminds of of a story. Years ago, some neighborhood kids thought it was funny to collect all the "House For Sale" signs in the entire development and put them all in one specific "unpopular" kid's yard. It was funny until they got arrested for theft.

So I expanded off the use of the folding chair, still need more posts in order to upload pics. After some trial and error of finding new vertical supports to hold the targets on, I can across some old arrows in the basement while going through some archery equipment. I shave the veins off, and used 2 hose clamps on each to secure the arrow to the posts of what used to be the back rest. Since I have over a dozen or so laying around, if they get shot in half, just swap'em out at no cost.
When done shooting, loosen the hose clamps, slide the arrows along the supports and place the whole apparatus back into the bag that the chair came in.
Used medium sized binder clips (unlimited supply at work) to hold the targets to the arrows.
