View Full Version : Malfunction after the last round fired

Went to the outdoor range this morning. Great day for target practice with the K9 in the NC mountains.
Anyway, twice after the last round in the magazine was fired the spent cartridge ejected but the slide failed to stay in the open position. Rather, it slid back to the original forward position. Also, pulling the trigger made the trigger move back and forth with no click and very little resistance.
I know that the slide stop is responsible to hold back the slide, but does that mean that the problem is with the slide stop or with something else like the recoil spring?

I guess nobody cares.
For what it's worth, I field striped the pistol and inspected it. Nothing our of the ordinary. So, I cleaned it and put it back together for next time.

We all care my friend. I don't know how this went for 2 days without notice. I didn't see it till just now?
Anyhow the inactive trigger sounds more like a trigger bar issue or perhaps the last round fired was low powered enough not to reset the trigger. It should have if it ejected the last empty case. If it was a lot of rounds and you got a little tired, the grip might have not been firm enough.
How many mags did you shoot with the 2 failures? What kind of ammo?

Just feeling lonely. I know you care ;)
I think my grip was OK. But your point about the ammo is interesting. I was using Blazer aluminum 9mm FMJ 115 gr.
My first pistol was Bersa Thunder 380. I used Blazer exclusively (also aluminum I think) because it was less expensive and "Hey, all ammo is really the same isn't it?" With that set up I had repeated failures to eject. I sold the gun and bought at CZ 75B 9mm. Never had a problem using all brands of ammo, but not Blazer. It is a beautiful pistol but too big to CCW in the summer.
So, I bought the Kahr, which has been great until last week, again using all brands of ammo. I've been using the Blazer over the past month and experienced a few failures to eject, but this was the first time the slide failed to stay open. I wonder if a few rounds were lighter than labeled?
I don't want to dump on Blazer based on my anecdotal experience. Other's experience with this would be interesting to hear.
I cleaned the pistol today and will report back after target practice next week. If it happens again I will replace the springs to see if that makes a difference. I have about 6 more boxes of Blazer to use, and then I'll re-evaluate my choice of ammo. (Carry ammo is Remington UMC 115 gr JHP.) My K9 is almost 20 years old (1995 or so) based on the serial number. Not sure about the care it received or how much it was fired before I came along. The springs don't seem to be a problem. But maybe it's worthwhile to make the change.

I've never had a problem with the aluminum Blazer myself. I've used a lot of it in 45, some in 9. Never gave an issue. I like it when I'm shooting with a group that don't like to hoard brass like myself, places where it's hard to pick up etc.
My kids don't appreciate the value of picking up brass either. I constantly remind them that if we don't, the shooting trips will be much fewer. New stuff is pricey.
A light load would certainly cause the issue.
If your carry loads are working 100 % then I'd say it might be an ammo issue.
Sometimes it's tough, you don't want to make too many changes or you won't know which one was the fix.

Closely inspect your magazine(s) as well since it is their job to lift the slide lock. If the magazine follower is not positioned correctly, it will not lock the slide back. I don't see how that would effect your trigger, mine resets after the slide travels about a 1/4" to 1/2" to the rear, well before the brass is ejected.
Odd problem, let us know what you find.
