View Full Version : Ruger 10/22 purchase
I've decided that my birthday present this year will be a Ruger 10/22.
And I'm looking for something accurate out of the box, so Question is: 10/22T (target: bull barrel/target trigger) or 10/22 VTLH (tactical: bull barrel/target trigger/built in front tripod/Hogue stock).
Due to the magic of Ruger's LE/MIL pricing both are about the same price (sub $400), so what's your liking?
Neither come with iron sights so I'd also like any suggestions on a reasonably priced scope for general target shooting, nothing in excess of 100-200 yards along with my aging eyes. I've seen some scopes specifically labeled for rimfire rifles, but have no experience with them.

The 10/22 is on my short list of wants.
As far as scope, I asked here a few weeks ago on recommendations.
One of them was the BSA Sweet 22.
I purchased one to put on my old Glenfield 25 with the intentions of moving it over to the 10/22 in the future
This is the one I got. It's awesome! Makes shooting a pleasure again.

Looks good and the price is right. How much have you used it?
Note: Holy moley just saw this on Amazon. Is it for real?

If you want a real treat - get a 10/22T, and forget all the standard triggers - the ONLY trigger to get is the Kidd. Thats the best. Check his video's on YouTube.
The Ruger barrel is up to the task. Actually... the stock light barrel is very good if you take the time to bed it correctly, and the action too.
You may want... to rework the receiver to have a clean out hole in the rear part. In that way, you can bed the barrel to the action with metal filled accraglass, and bed the whole thing to the stock. Yes the barrel is then semi permanent to the action (it can be removed.... heat... cleanup, etc), but that will make for a rock- rock- rock steady arrangement. The typical Ruger draw-in wedge thing tends to rock the barrel in the action - not the best arrangement. If you bed it to the action then use the wedge for insurance, you're good to go.
With a Kidd trigger, and good sights, expect half inch groups at 50 yards. Not really the best accuracy from a .22 - but pretty damn good for an autoloader. Proper bedding will shrink the groups from over an inch, to about a half inch... and you can always do that later on, no?
As a comparison, my Kimber of Oregon All American Match, does about sub quarter inch at 50 yards with Eley match or Remingon subsonic ammo. Single shot bolt guns do that tho.

It's hard to go wrong with any 10/22 Ruger puts out. I bought a new 10/22 carbine for about $200+ tax out the door. Whole lot of fun wrapped up in a small package.:D

I have a standard 10/22 (my Wife claimed it long ago) and a 10/22T that was a gift from her. The T has a 4X12 BSA scope and is a tack driver. The standard went with myself and the son in law to a range day last fall. I had added a fixed 4 power Bushnell scope to it on a really good base set. It was in need of fianlly dialing in the scope. We set up two of those "five squared" sight in targets up and I sarted shooting 5 shot groups and zeroing in the scope (25yrds, all other lines were packed). Soon I had the little standard 10/22 shooting right on so I loaded up one of the new Ruger 25 round mags and moved to the center of the next target. Shooting with elbows braced lightly on the bench I was shooting the center out of the target with nary a flyer. My Son-in-law finally pointed out we were drawing a crowd...
Held its zero great at the 50yrd line but with so many Deer Hunters there that day we could never move over to the 100yrd line.
Stock Ruger triggers improve with time and true target triggers are fairly easy to install. To my mind the best thing for shooting the little Ruger right is in the scope base. I use the Leupold one peice base and mid high rings. Fits me right and is a very solid mount. Not a huge fan of the little tip-off base Ruger "used" to send out with the 10/22 (still do??).
Good luck and enjoy.

The 10/22 is a great little rifle. Mine is from '77 and I have no idea how many thousands of rounds it has had through it. Even the basic rifles are wonderful shooters. I saw that Browning has just brought out a holosight for around $70 and I am going to have to check that out.

I've been planning my next purchase to be a 10/22. I know you said you wanted out-of-the-box accuracy, so this idea may not be of interest. But I'm interested in light weight and smaller grip/distance to trigger (family shooting). So the bull barrel model isn't all that light and the standard 10/22 stock is a bit of a reach for smaller hands. I'm thinking of taking a 10/22 tactical model (10/22 fs) and swapping the standard stock out for a Knoxxx Axiom floating barrel stock. Seen a few of these, typically w/ target barrels, but there are a few w/ the standard barrels and they generally get good reviews in this configuration for accuracy and overally shootability.
Happy shopping. Any new gun purchase is a good one!

Thanks. The 10/22 VLEH is a Target model with an over molded Hogue stock and built in foldable front tripod. Ordered it yesterday along with that
$39.00 deal on a BSA Sweet .22 3-9x scope. Given the run on Rugers
I'm wondering how long it's going to take to get it from a major distributor.
My current wait record is six months for a stainless Sig P220.

Picked up a 1967 Canadian Centennial model in, let's see it was either 1968 or 1969. Many memories were made with it over the years. To include me and my brother's impromptu competitive shoots at targets consisting of silly things like empty 12ga shotgun hulls at 100 yards and keeping tin cans bouncing around for a whole magazine. Small game on the farm lived in great fear of it -- lol.
Found it was plenty accurate for me out of the box with the only addition I made to it being a 4x scope. Still have it and it's still a lot of fun to take out without having to break the bank on ammo costs.

I just bought a 16.5" 1:9 twist threaded 10/22 barrel to go into my Charger.
Yes, I know I am weird.

Whats the plan scoundrel? You gonna leave the Charger stock and just have a super long handgun barrel?

Indeed. When I have it in there, I may reinforce the front of the stock with a tastefully painted hose clamp (one of those ones with the butterfly knob) over a bit of velcro to protect the finish, just to prevent it wiggling loose and the front screw digging into the stock too deeply.
Man where are you guys finding the 10-22 take down model. My local gun shop never seems to have one in stock? How much are they going for?

Got my first 10/22 as a birthday present right about that same time. A little polishing and trigger group work turned it into a tack driver. Have three, I think, including that first which is a never part with gun. Only .22lr rifle/carbines I currently own....have no need for anything else.

I had a standard 10/22 that I've owned for 25 years. It has a Burris 3-9 compact scope on it (that cost a good bit more than the rifle) and has been minute of squirrels head accurate out to 60-70 yards. I will admit cheating by installing a Volquarson hammer that dropped the trigger pull to about 2 1/2 pounds.

I've had several Ruger 10/22 rifles over the years.
That was my first real gun as a kid.
All were just the standard version.
But they all were tack drivers.
I had a Bushnell 3-8x zoom scope, but took it off.
As I couldn't miss and it wasn't fun to shoot.
Just not sporting.
Any 10/22 will be crazy accurate.
I'd go tactical myself.

I bought my first 10/22 in 1968 with the deluxe stock for $62.50. I bought another one in 1970 and never took it out of the box. It still sits in the clost waiting for my grandsons to get a little bigger. My third one was one of the 1976 models with the deluxe stock. I still use the first and third ones quite a bit hunting and plinking. I love their accuracy and their great looks.

I prefer the take down model with the stainless steel barrel. Of course I'm more into hunting than sniping. As for a scope, any scope with the word Leupold etched into it will do.

These guys have one for around $300.

Just a side note: I'm still waiting for Ruger to make some more of these puppies. It's seven months and waiting for the Ruger model #1230.
If I hadn't locked in a crazy good price, I'd stop the order.
Apparently Ruger uses Unicorn grease to lube these, and that's rarer than
cheap 9mm ammo....

I am pretty sure the Magnum Research Magnum Lite's are available, at least MRI may have some. This is basically a 10/22 that is fully decked out from the factory. I just got one for my daughter's first gun. I will post some pics once we hit the range. They are absolute tack drivers, very light, and beautiful!

+1 on john's MR recommendation. I love mine. Just picked it up a few weeks back. Very nice rifle. At today's prices on a Ruger 10/22, this isn't all that much more and I also found the increase in price right now on these is not as great as on a stock 10/22 (online anyway, you can still get a basic 10/22 at most LGS for under 300 when they show up, around here anyway). Anyway, I paid around $100 over what these were selling for back before this crazy period, where many 10/22s are selling for double, or at least $200 more than they were before this latest price fiasco.
The model I got has the poly stock. Super light, super accurate. I love it.

Everyone should have at least one 10/22
Mine is from 1993. My 13th birthday
My first 10/22 dates to mid-late '70s. Then wife bought it for me as a birthday present. Still have that one, wouldn't part with it, and have been completely enamored of the platform ever since.

HDoc Lipsey has or had one in stock yesterday showing the model you want in stock. Lipsey is one of the few wholesalers that allow "us" to look at what they have . maybe your dealer can check for you. Price showed is retail.

Our LGS has had and sold a couple of the 10/22 TC model so ruger over the last month. Many LGS could do a better job of finding firearms.
