View Full Version : PM45 advice, what to do??

I have a PM45 that's making the rounds back and forth to the mother ship. After trip three, they installed a barrel that's 3/8" too long and sticks out of the frame and the slide will not lock back at all.

I have several Kahrs, CW45 back and forth till they made it perfect. CM9's never an issue, K40 Covert, good to go.

Are the PM45's good enough to buy a new one and then, when they ever get this one right, I'll give it to someone or sell it?

It seems like statistically, you either get a good one or a bad one and mostly good ones. LEO discount price is about 600 bucks and I sincerely regret buying the last one "as new in box" on GunBroker.

I'm spending as much as the gun is worth in break in ammo it seems.

What do you all think, try a new one or continue messing with the old? I happen to think it's the perfect carry pistol, otherwise I'd grab a Glock 36 and not expect issues. My confidence level had faltered a bit on this one.

It sounds like somehow you have a slightly older (maybe 2-3 years) PM45, with the shorter slide, and Kahr fitted a longer barrel into that slide for some reason.

It should protrude about 1/8 inch, not 3/8 inches. It would be a tight fit to get in there, and the slide would need slight modification to do so.

To get a P45 barrel in there... I'm not sure it could ever get in there without extensive modification to the front of the slide.

As for locking back... is that while firing or any any time (even manually).

Show us a picture.

I find it hard to believe that Kahr sent a pistol out that way.... or.....

Maybe the barrel is not in the pistol correctly, protruding because the pin is behind the locking area?

I'm unfortunately, not a pic download type guy. The barrel is installed correctly and is a real pain to install. I was surprised to get it back that way. The recoil spring is super tight and wants to almost kink upon installation, when put the gun together, all happy and anxious, the darned thing wouldn't lock and split the heel of my hand with the sight when it snapped shut. The gunsmith told me on the last trip to just send slide assy. and not the frame. I thought better, but did what I was told.

What I'm looking for is the confidence level of the group. Is it worth the risk to buy another PM45 and either use this one if they get it right as a back up or give to wife as a car Kahr.

I've thought of grabbing a CM40 as an interim piece, they are cheaper, but I really like the PM45.

This one won't lock back at all and I'm afraid to shoot it right now. Will a bigger lock do the trick? I'm surprised they sent it out this way, they seem genuine and really decent folks willing to help. I just want a PM45 to alternate with Colt New Agent as carry pieces.

If it were me I would make Kahr fix the gun no matter how many times it takes. Did your paperwork say “test fired ok” when it was returned with the too long barrel? If it did that is a concern. I love my mk's but the 9 has been to Kahr 4 times. If it has to go again it gets fixed and then goes.

I may. I just got off the line with head gunsmith who told me to send slide/barrel only. Apparently, he went on vacation and never saw the gun, someone else replaced barrel with wrong one and never tested, installed new recoil spring.

Are my results so unusual for a PM45, are they mostly good ones?

Wonderful gun. There was most likely an error at the factory. Come back to us after you get it back.

I carry one at work I just picked up and love it. After I shot about 200 rounds the gun was filthy and the trigger wouldn't reset. Took it apart cleaned all the grud out and it is running great.

PM45 night sights and an MK9...love them both

Sounds like a bad case of Muggsy's luck. Some would say Murphy's law, but if they did it's only because they don't know Muggsy. :) Kahr will get it running right for you. Hang in there.

Bought a PM45 during bike week in Daytona in 2011. Been a great gun. I liked it so much, I bought another, used, privately, and its been a great gun. Also got a PM9... its been great.

As with almost any autoloader, there are some ammo brands and types that are just not gonna work with the pistol. Most .45 ammo is geared for 1911 use, and 1911's are more tolerant of off spec ammo. The PM45 requires full power ammo to operate correctly. I find that the WWB will work with mine, but I'm a bit rock fisted, and that may not apply to everyone. I've got Remington and Aguilla rounds that are more powerful, and they work well (and kick a bit more).

IF... a big IF... I was to want to shoot a lot of reloads though a PM45, I'd probably find a recipe of bullet, powder type and weight that shot good groups, and then tailor a separate recoil spring assembly for that round - which no doubt would be a little lower powered than full house rounds.

fokker back, u can send slide and barrel regular mail for aobut $8. Put a nice letter in there stating what theydid and u might ask for ur inconvenice that wouldthey send u an extra flush fit mag for ur PM45, being this will make the 3rd time back.

This last time was a kahr inside screw up, not something the gun done wrong. both the same results but not a gun reliablility issue, just a kahr fokkup.

SEND IT BACK..

can't believe a kahr tech person would not have seen such a foul up and caught it. WOW. I would not want that fella touching my gun.

Well, they did call today and indicated they would replace the whole topside. I asked 'smith to throat and polish and he agreed. I'm hopeful this will do the trick! Good folks.
