View Full Version : I'm learning to love the recoil

So, I finally got the extended mag and side saddle installed on my Remington 870 20 gauge and shot it last night. It was very comfortable with 5/8 oz slugs, but the #3 buckshot rang my bell. My range doesn't allow birdshot, so I guess I'll have to go out into the woods to try that out.
Then, about a week ago, I shot an M1A. Yesterday, I ordered an AR10. :D An Armalite 16" A4 to be exact. This model can use pmags.

And there are different kinds of recoil.. the kind like, "Ouch, CRAP that hurt my hand!!!" like you might get from a little Keltec PF9, or the "Dadgum, that 7mm mag took my shoudler off!".
Honestly, I can deal with scenario #2 better. It actually hurt worse to shoot my little LCP when I had it than my S&W 629. The .44 just stood up. The LCP just felt like an M80 blowing up in my hand with plastic shrapnel. Recoil from long guns doesn't bother me much as I grew up hunting and shot a lot of large caliber rifles starting as a young teen.
Speaking of recoil, we have a Nock volley gun from the late 19th Century at the museum where I work. The recoil can dislocate or break your shoulder as all seven barrels discharge at the same time.

Need to try a few rounds through a Mosin-Nagant if you wanna feel some recoil.
Even with a cheater pad on it I wake up with a bruise the next day.

I don't think I'd have any interest in lighting that bad boy off. I'd sure enjoy holding it for a spell though. I dig old stuff.

Bawanna, if you are ever traveling diagonal across the country and end up in Alabama, let me know and I will give you a personal tour through the Berman Museum and even down in the vault ;)

If I get down that way it'll be a must stop for sure. I'll bring the white gloves and my largest drool cup. I'd be plumb pleased even just to look and not touch. My wife has me trained only to look and not touch, lots of things, guns is just one of many. Our new front desk girl is another.
I appreciate the kind offer, I really do.

My 44 mag alaskan is my hardest recoiling handgun. But the grip has a gel insert so it surprisingly pleasant to shoot.
My pistol grip mossberg 500 on the other hand stings my hand after a box or so!

Darn right. Oldest son has a standard basic with no pad. That's the only gun that after a box of 20 I lay it down and say I've had enough of this one for today. I can't hit crap with it either. BUT I WANT ONE WITH A GOOD BARREL FOR A PROJECT RIFLE :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Can't damage these historical pieces. Own one as they come from the Armory refurbed. Sweaty and worn and in their original shellac. Please don't mod them.

There are hundreds of millions of them out there. No harm in modding one.

I agree, just make sure you don't have one that is special for some reason before you do any modification.

Guess I'd have to get 2. One to mod and another to keep original.
Actually the oldest son has the "hex barrel" or something like that which is suppose to be something special. I think it's older or something. He got it for $109 at the gun show all packed in it's own goo. It cleaned up OK.

I briefly looked at these guns while looking for a larger round and was told that the guns made before 1942 were better because they were made by hand and not mass produced. The hex shaped receivers are older and preferred.

If you can find a Finnish version of a Mosin, they're generally more valuable.
The holy grail are the US made 1915's. Imperial Russia gave a contract to Westinghouse to manufacture them, but the revolution happened before they could be shipped.
Most of the ones you see now at AIM and other gun stores are post WWII arsenal refurbs that were stored in the Ukraine for a citizen army in case of WWIII. When the USSR broke up, the Ukraine needed dollars and so the market is flooded with $100 rifles. They're still very cool.
I guess it messes with my sensibilities to modify a rifle that could have been at the Seige of Stalingrad or the Battle of Berlin. Long shot for an actual 'been there' rifle, but it's possible.
