Not to be outdone by the Nat'l Weather Service and their purchase of ammo, we now have Social Security purchasing 174,000 rds of .357 Sig. Go figure

Guess those folks are a bit afraid of what folks might do if they start messing with our checks. ;)

wow but is it true?
That's my question. There's so much disinformation out there on the Internet, one doesn't know.....

Yes, it's true. The SSA confirmed and explained the purchase.

I don't trust the US Government, especially the DHS and the DoJ.

I'm not particularly concerned about the SSA. Here's why:

174,000 rounds for 295 special agents in 66 offices. So not every SSA office even has special agents assigned to it.

That comes to 589.83 rounds/agent and 4.47 special agents/office.

I can easily understand how certain offices in LA, NYC, Chicago, etc might need armed security.

Plus, that's really not a lot of ammo if this is an annual purchase (49.15 rounds/agent/month) and I think it is.

funny snidely, just posted the same calculation on the other gov't ammo purchase thread here. great minds think alike.

yes it's true, the SSA responded on their blog about it after all the bru ha ha on the net over it.

personally, the fact these gov't organizations even exist scares me and creeps me out more than the ammo purchases do.

I don't practice with hollow points, only to make sure they will function in my guns, but the SSA said that is what they use for practice.

I saw that on Fox, but still am left with one thought. If the government wanted to buy a ton of ammo for possible civil unrest, might they not move the purchase to smaller agencies hoping nobody would notice? Of course the opposite seems to have happened, so that may disprove my theory. Seeing it go to less mainstream branches got plenty of attention.

I believe it is law that they must practice and qualify with their carry load.

Not law, but it's policy/regulation...and good practice. Six hundred rounds per sworn agent/security folk in a bulk buy really ain't that much. A separate contract for say half in equivalent practice ball would have most likely increased the per round price.

What I really don't get is why anyone with even a half-assed understanding of LE/security/military is freaking out over this.
