View Full Version : Wood Grip Questions

I really like the look of the wood grips sold by Kahr. I have some questions about them.
1. I think I like the look of the smooth better than the checkered. Are the smooth ones difficult to hold on to with sweaty hands?
2. My stock grip screws keep coming loose. I have read about using blue loctite; but I have been holding off on doing that in case I get the wood grips. Do the screws stay in better with the wood grips, without loctite?

The screws might stay in slightly better but not much. I like a real thin rubber oring over the screw. The rubber squeezes out and they don't come lose. Get several as they only last a couple removals before they are tore up.
The wood grips I'm told are slightly more handfilling which helps the grip but the smooth surface might be a challenge with sweaty hands.
Get the smooth from Kahr and if they are too slippery I'll checker them for ya.
I can't seem to get a fit on other peoples guns other than my own or I'd build em from scratch.

I like the smooth, I carry in IWB holster and they don't chafe your skin like the checkered ones will. Not slippery either.

I have been considering them as well. I have bought many pairs of hogue wood grips(same manufacturer Kahr's store carries). And have great luck with them. Also I have always bought the smooth and never had a problem with losing any purchase on the handgun. Personal I think that checkering would definitely irretate the skin. As far as the grip screws, I think a little loctite would solve that problem.

First one is a Model 1006 10mm. And the second is a 5946 9mm DAO. They are great pistols, very good shooters.

Thanks for the replies. Bawanna, do you happen to have a size for those "o" rings? Nice pistols Jeepster and Fatmatt.

I got checkered wood grips from Kahr for my MK9 a while back. They really dress up the gun, and have made it slightly easier to grip for me.
When I was still using the original black factory grips, I lost several grip screws even though I had tightened them before each session. When I got the wood grips, I used blue Loctite on the screws. After a number of shooting sessions, the top screws on both sides are now loose again, but the bottom ones are still tight (might be because they are of slightly different lengths). However - with the wood grips even the loose screws have not fallen off in any shooting session, thus it does seem that the wood "holds" them better for some reason.
BTW, the factory wood grips did not fit my MK9 without a little Dremel work - Irritating that that was necessary, but easy enough to do.

you know....i just realized, that if youre a S&W 39XX series fan you have to love the stainless steel Kahr 9mms. the lines are similar, the DAO trigger models are similar to the Karhr's......
one of my most favored guns is my 3953 so its easy for me to start to really like the K9 (again).

That's the best looking Kahr MK9 I have seen! The wood grain is beautiful. I hope my MK9 will look as good when my new wood grips are installed. I will know by next Wensday when they arrive. :D

QuercusMax, great looking MK. Thanks for the input regarding the grip screws. Was yours one of those certain serial number ones that need the fitting of the grips?

I had to use the rubber rings with my wooden grips, they seemed to loosen every time at the range somewhere between 60-100 rounds.

On Kahr's web page for the grips (http://www.kahr.com/Grips/Kahr-Wood-Grips-Checkered-MK-Series.asp), they say that "Some fitting may be required. Will not fit MK models with "GAXXXX" prefix." Mine is a GC, but I guess they were correct about needing the fitting. It was no big deal, provided that you have a Dremel, in which case 60 seconds of work did the job.
I posted some pics a while back (http://kahrtalk.com/showpost.php?p=109648&postcount=11) that shows the problem.

Man, these MK's with the wood grips are giving me the itch, and I don't need to buy anything right now.
Anyone out there got one for $300 they want to sell ? I am so hooked on these Kahr's :)

GOOFA, nice looking MK. Do you, or anyone, know the size of the "o" ring for these?
Thanks QuercusMax.

That would be extremely lucky to find one for $300.00. Good luck.

I don't know the official size but I'm gonna measure later. Found a place on line that sells bulk, tells how to measure and translate that to the size.
Sounds like I might have to order 500 but that's ok, they are only a penny a piece, so I might be the go to guy for grip o rings if I can get the debit card from the mrs. Same ones work for 1911's and the Kahrs and most others for that matter so not so bad.

Redstate... If you go to Lowes in the plumbing suppliy dept they have a bunch of O rings in a pkg that hangs on a peg board. You want size 60 they come in a pkg of 10 for under $2.00. I just replenish my supply two days ago.

Just came back from putting another 200 rounds through my MK9 with wood grips. The top screws on each side (which had apparently escaped from the blue Loctite I used on all 4 screws some while back) still hadn't loosened up. When I still had the original rubber grips in place, at least one would have fallen off and all the others would have been just hanging in there.
But the O-rings sound like a good idea - I'll have to put them on my shopping list. Thanks GOOFA for size and source info.

Thanks goofa from me as well. I've not been able to find what I like. I can find the right diameter but they are always way to thick.
We got a Lowes in town and I plan to visit the plumbing section soon, although I hate plumbing, almost as much as electricity.
You know why God created plumbers and electricians?
Cause carpenters don't have time to do it all...........................
I'm missing my nail belt...

Okay. decided against the wood grips for now. Went out and got the #60 "o" rings, and I could not get them to compress enough to start the screw. I also did not want to force it.
So, I ended up getting Permatex Thread Locker in purple (purple is the low strenght, below blue), and just got done applying it to the screws and tightened them down. I will wait on the 24 hour full cure time and go out and see if the screws hold. Will report accordingly.

that is the IMO correctr threadlocker. The purple is the weakest of all and it will keep the screws in place but still allow u to remove the. I highly recommend removing the grtips when giving the gun a good lower frame cleanig with ANY CLEANING SOLVENT. the finish on the grips won't stand up to cleaning solvents. so IMO error on thesid eofcaution, or u will be sendng your grips to Bawanna to get refinished, like I did when I got some hoppe's #9 on them...

Well tried 50 rounds through it today with the purple Permatex and none loosened at all. Good to go now with the stock grips.
