View Full Version : Really need some help, MK9

I bought a pristine used MK9 several years ago. I shot it a great deal after I bought it, but after the novelty of a new gun wore off, I stuck it in the safe, and there it has remained until today when I decided to clean it along with several other safe queens.

I field stripped the Kahr and found it was as clean as could be. I applied a little fresh oil and then tried to put it back together. As I did so, I was mystified as to how the spring system could possibly work once installed. But after several attempts to re-assemble, it struck me that the assembly might be broken. I don't remember what the spring assembly looked like from the last time I had it apart several years ago.

The small metal disc that abuts against the barrel under lug (link) is not attached to the assembly. It is an independent piece. My question: Should this be the case? Shouldn't that disk be permanently attached to the spring assembly? If not, what keeps the spring guide from falling out the end of the gun?

If I need a new assembly, good. That will solve the problem.

Is this an item that breaks often on the MK9?

Thanks for your help.

Here's a link to a schematic. If that disc is broke off I assume the spring is lose and you have to compress it a long way to get it in place as in it's no longer a self contained unit. You could take the spring off?

I've heard of the nut coming off the front but never the disc coming off the back. Course that don't mean it never happened, I just never heard of it.

If such is the case you need a new recoil assembly and your back on the track.

Looks like its about 14 bucks for a new one if needed.

The recoil guide rod and spring are a captive unit. Basically one piece, if the small disk broke off it will need replaced. Now is the opportunity to go for the stainless guide rod.

I don't think the stainless guide rod is an option with the one piece unit.

Depending on what you want to do, here's an option to consider:
Wolff sells recoil springs and RECOIL GUIDE ROD SET & RECOIL SPRING COMBINATION $34.95 + shipping.

http://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=1&mID=29

These are not captive systems so that you can just buy the springs... reduced, standard, or extra power, as desired. They usually ship by USPS Priority and are pretty fast with orders... just an option to consider.

You can consider buying a reduced-power striker spring, too. I bought a 3-pack and am waiting for my parts from Kahr to complete my recent breakdowns and test them.

Email customer service with a picture of the broken assembly and they might just send you a new set. Jay likes good photos. Include the pistol model and serial number. They can see when it was made and decide on warranty coverage... maybe goodwill replacement.

You don't need to send anything unless they request it.

I thank all of you for your responses. They were very helpful. I was glad to hear that none of you have heard of this problem before which indicates that my problem isn't likely to crop up again. Thanks for your help.

Checkout youtube. (thatsheepdog) has a video about his Kahr PM45. His guide rod assembly broke, it was the front disk that came off not the back. He shot his pistol with it broken for an unknown amount of rounds. Your's was not a completely isolated incident.

The front is a NUT that is SUPPOSED to be permanently affixed with Red Loctite. Kahr's answer to the nut coming off is a new assembly.

Mine departed soon after its return from Kahr service. They sent me another assembly and I made my own nut replacement for a spare assembly:

I couldn't find the Loctite Green locally but I found the Permatex "equivalent", HOWEVER
Permatex GREEN Threadblocker is a PENETRATING formula for penetrating between assembled parts. It is wicked in by capillary action. This is much stronger than the Loctite version requiring more torque or heat above 500 degrees and hand tools to separate components. It creates a super-glue-like molecular bond and This is NOT for stuff you want to take apart again! A little of this goes a long way, so be careful. I used this on the assembled recoil assembly after I made my own nut for the end of the rod.
