View Full Version : How Do You Carry Spare Magazine?

I carry my CM9 IWB and my crossbreed holster does not have an integrated magazine pouch. Looking for the most comfortable carry method for a spare magazine. I'm currently leaning toward a pocket pouch but want it to be as slim as possible.

Hey Path4, I opt for two carry methods, one is the Desantis pocket carrier and the second is a low profile magazine holder made by Gebhard Solutions at 9:00. Sometimes I use both to give me an additional mag.

A slim pocket pouch, carried in a pocket opposite where the holster rides, is a good idea. I have an inexpensive, thin, fabric knife sheath that works for both Officer-size 1911 mags and Kahr 9 and 40 mags. A close friend, a Marine combat vet, carries his spare Glock mag in his pocket in a baggie.

I like a double mag carrier with a paddle. I think mine are Gould and Goldrich but several make them. Easy on and easy off.

When I'm going minimalist, like only an ankle rig I stick a mag someplace on the chair or in a pocket.

I also have a horizontal phone pouch that I use frequently for just one mag. It works just about anywhere since it looks like a phone and you can't see the mag.

i have a meco pouch being made...leather pocket holster which holds the mag at about a 45 degree angle on the weak side (similar to the nemisis version but made of leather). the rig will be enough to keep the magazine oriented properly in my pocket. ive seen some pocket magazine holders which were too narrow and let the magazine move around and did not allow the mag to come out of the pocket without the holder coming with it or did not hold the mag enough to prevent it from sliding out of the pocket when seated.

I made it myself:

It hangs inside my left back pocket, the mag doesn't show at all.

RUBB: is that ur blunt nose PM9?? if so u make 4 now on this fourm that have one..as u know Bawanna won't let us have our own insignia until we get to 20. at first it was only 3 members but then he raised the bar 3 more times, so we are at 20 minimum now, not to say when we get close to 15, he probably will raise the bar again. Its not fair but we gotta live with his "dictatorship". Hopefully the day will come when we can all gather around a fire and throw the cm9 insignia in the fire, like those assholes over seas do with our American Flag. and we will proudly fly our new PMJ 9 blunt flag. Just sayin.

Outta be an understood rule. for every Amercian flag those assholes burn, we will throw on KORAN in the fire and dance around it. Just sayin

probably gonna get this post "delected". for probalby it insulted some islamist..

Jocko might pay attention to these fella's that act like adults around here from time to time instead of picking on the poor folks (like me) all the time.

Visualize me spiking a blunt nose in the end zone and acting like it's an everyday thing. Might have to use your imagination a lot!

I don't actually visulize u even owning a blunt nose PMJ9, u being one of those 45 guys who thinks a big hole is the way to go. In some case a big hole is OK to, just now u need to use ur imagination. LOL.

A mk620 magazine (9-6 on the side of the mag) fits well in a rainbowofcalifornia dot com medium knifecase. You can also find that one at a REI store if you have one local to you.

If you have a bass pro (or any significant sporting goods store) near you could try a medium redhead knife sheath from them. I did find the sewing of the belt strap on this sheath was less robust than the beefier rainbow product and it would tear out in time requiring some sewing repair. I gave this one up when I got the other.

I suspect any sheath in this general size should work fine for you.

Good luck in your search.

Thank you for the replies! Jfootin - Doh! I cant believe i didnt do a search before posting, I always do that cant believe i forgot to.

The Beardog mag carrier looks promising, but im having a hard time visualizing how it will keep the magazine from shifting around in my pocket. When I try to carry a magazine in a big jeans pocket it will go from upright | to slanted / to even lying flat _ in the bottom of my pocket (lol i dont think the illustrations are necessary). Will the Beardog keep it from doing that? Cant imagine how....

I use a simple nylon knife sheath with velcro flap closure that works perfect. Wear via belt loop on L hip, nobody has a clue. Cheap & effective. :D

I folded an old soft-style mouse pad over a mag and sewed it together grippy side out. Easy to trim to any shape you like and won't come out of your pocket with the mag. Keeps the lint out and the first round in place. Still in good shape after a year of use

Well, if you want one that always keeps the mag positioned, my personal preference is the Galco Pocket Magazine Carrier (http://www.lapolicegear.com/galco-pmc-pocket-magazine.html). The one I got for my CM9 is the Model PMC 26. I found that the 6 round mag sits too deep in it, so I stuffed a tissue down in there and now it sits high enough to grab easily. I have been trying to remember to replace the tissue with some cleaning patches. As you can tell from looking at it, it is made of soft leather, conforms to the shape of your leg immediately and is very comfortable.

I carry one spare magazine (6 round) in the left rear pocket of my Wranglers. That pocket also holds a Benchmade folding knife and a handkerchief. Thus far no rounds have moved in the mag, and no signs of rust.

Probably not the best system, but the magazine doesn't move, and I'm able to get to it quickly.

I carry my largest capacity Kahr mag for the caliber in a Kydex OWB holster on the opposite side. I don't want to be juggling the gun for something I need in a hurry. I wear my gun IWB at about 4 o'clock and also have my Gerber FAST Draw clipped in my left front pocket for a backup. My shirts are usually oversized Polos always worn untucked and I can sweep the shirt tail up and draw one-handed.

I tried IWB carry mag-holders, but too uncomfortable. I added a "sweat shield" to the inside of the clip to prevent the magazines from being uncomfortable and poking me in the sides, especially when seated in the car.

There was a poll on here a while back and if I remember right, the numbers were about two to one between those who carry a spare and those who do not. Not scientific, of course, but I think it was pretty true. I'll have to look for the poll. EDIT - Here is the link:

Sorry... thought YOU were being snippy. Some guys don't, but most of us do. A lot of problems have been experienced with mags falling out or malfunctioning. In the "heat of battle" stuff happens and if your one and only mag fell out in the scuffle or your reduced motor skills helped you drop it, it's nice to have another chance with one on your person.

It's like carrying a spare tire in your car, but the loss of a magazine or not having a reload could be more costly. Everyone should have at least three mags so they have a chance of having two serviceable ones at any time. I prefer to carry the largest capacity available for a spare... an 8-round extended-grip mag for my PM9. I like the most compact in the pistol for concealability.

JMHO and YMMV.

Alotta great advice, thank you! I cant decide between carrying on the waist band or in the pocket, doh! Or one that can move around in my pocket, but may be more comfortable, than something that fills up my pocket and doesnt allow it to move at all. Have been carrying one in the cell phone pocket? (i think thats what its referred to as, tired cant think straight) in my jeans but want to do it right

Hey, right is what works for you! :) A cell phone case or a case for a folding knife would work on your belt and be incognito. That would leave your pocket free to put other things. The BEARDOG one will work in your pocket, and I think it will lay down and stay where you put it. The galco one needs to be in the pocket by itself, and it will keep the mag positioned ideally for quick retrieval. (I wear jeans, so my experience is with that sort of pocket. I don't own any cargo pants, but I imagine any pocket mag holster could tumble around in those pockets.)

Again, do what works for you and call yourself a genius! ;)

Spare magazine carry is important. "Muscle memory" plays an important part in fast reloads under stress... like focusing on that BG's muzzle orientation. It's important that your reload be where you can grab it with your "free" hand... and that it be oriented for quick insertion without fumbling and trying to figure out which part of the magazine to insert where. It's amazing how wrong such a simple procedure can go under just the stress of trying to do it quickly at the range for the first few times. It takes lots practice and forethought to get where it seems your hand has a mind of its own and orients the magazine properly while your other is getting the pistol ready for the reload... all while seeking cover and trying to keep from getting shot... which means paying attention to the BG and maybe his buddies.

I think it's time to bring up a post by a brave young man... a trained Marine... he had great training, but not in reloading under fire. His experience and his sharing of his combat training shortcomings are very valuable and give you something to think about.

No, they are separate. The P32 is in a Galco pocket holster...it doesn't take up much room...and the mag is in the BearDog holder. There is plenty of room for both but not much else.

I carry mine in my left front jeans pocket. Seven round CW9. I have on a couple of occasions found at the end of the day that I had a pocket full of cartridges and an empty mag. Kahr mags are prone to this I have found due to cartridge angle and spring tension. So mine is not the best system, and I will not argue in its favor, but in all honesty, that is what I do. Other gun's mags do not do this.

That knife case idea sounds pretty good. Hide in plain sight. I think I'll start looking around. Or maybe even an MP3 player case that I can modify to fit properly. Anything that doesn't look like a mag pouch would be preferable to me.

I carry mine in a Passport double mag pouch. It came with a clip that I removed and has belt slots for wearing in either horizontal or verticle orientation. It may not be the best solution as it may be abit hard to remove mag from without taking it out of the pocket but it is what I have. Sometimes I wear it on a belt and have done so in both orientations.
