I've been eyeing and reading on the p380 for some time now. Have read good and bad, but quite a bit bad in regards to reliability. Some say the older/early ones are better than new, etc.
Should I get one and try or skip it? I have a PM40 new and really like it.

Buy a K40 instead! just kidding, a P380 is fine even if the round itself is kinda weak.

For me the 380 round itself is a whole lot better than nothing. Self defense loads IMO are adequate. I have 2 p238's that work without problem with all the brands of ammo at the range I go to. The p380 is a fine gun if you get a good one. You said you have read some of the post about it. Seems to be hit or miss so do you feel lucky?

For my 2 cents I passed on the Kahr and purchased a Ruger. I know, this is a Kahr forum but I never have had a problem with the LCP. Got it when it first came out and have 800 rds thru it.

My lcp had to go back in the beginning, it had issues. If one remembers Ruger recvalled over 50,000 of them due to drop safety issues. It is a good gun NOW, it was not at first. No doubt in my mind if both guns are perfect the Kahr will run circles around the ruger, but that being said the Ruger today will go bang every time. It is a nice gun. Ihad one and traded it EVEN up for a old style PM9 blunt nose version, so for me that ruber made me sme good bucks on that trade..

I really like my P380 and initially had slide lock back issues. One call to Kahr and a few questions to the smart guys on this forum and it is great. I would bet my life on it. It is a great option for carry when size and weight are issues, and it is a very good gun for practice. I have 4 Kahrs in 380, 9, and 45 and it is one that always grabs my attention at the range. The CM9 is so sweet that it almost seems boring! :D

I'm to cheap to spend that much money on a pistol that's going to get a little beat up during CC and shoots a round with such limitations as the .380. IMO P3at or LCP will reliably do just what you'd expect from a .380. Carry my P3at every morning during my power walk.

My P380 is always in my RF pocket even when I'm wearing my CM9. That's how much I think of this gun. Like an American Express credit card, I don't leave home without it. Mine has been flawless since the break-in period, shoots to point of aim and never fails to go bang when I pull the trigger. It is my constant companion.

i just bought one..shot it, loved the way it felt, very accurate...that said....after 49 rounds it broke (the day after I got it) and was sent back to kahr...still waiting after 2 weeks, kahr does need to work on their turn around repair time, it shouldn't bee more than more week to repari or replace any gun, if they have high volume repair-hire more people--better yet improve QC...I would think they would have prioritized my gun since it broke after one day..just sayin
all that to say...feeling lucky give it a try...a good one can't be beat

I would never carry one in my pocket, but it's a great little "pocket pistol" with all of the features of the larger Kahrs... features I wanted.
It's a very accurate pistol and loaded with Buffalo Bore 90-grain +P Gold Dots, it has better performance and more shots than a snubbie .38 shooting +P ammo. It's flatter and easier to reload, too.
That said, I have two and both have been back to the factory at least once. My latest had a bad extractor... back to the factory and fixed. The magazine catch failed... Kahr sent me another... then the rear sight came loose and I just slid it our, cleaned the dovetail, cleaned with alcohol, and then used Red Permatex to keep the sight in place. Some times they need a little extra "care", but once you get one like you want it, there's nothing better that small for regular shooting the RANGE or for concealed carry... when you want something SMALL.
JMHO.

Welcome to the forum! :) There is a wealth of valuable information in the New Member Area (http://kahrtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=56) and the Kahr-Tech (http://kahrtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27) sections of the forum.
Get a new one. Most of them are fine and like jocko says, it's the best 380 on the market. But we know that some have had some issues, so don't buy a used one and inherit someone else's problems. JMHO. Kahr will fix anything that needs fixing on a new one. Just sayin'.
I bought an early one from a forum member here. Had a few break in failure to feeds, but after that 100% reliable and trust it everyday whether it's primary or backup to my P45.
