View Full Version : K40 Trigger question
OK folks, I have a K40 (from 1997), and my question concerns the trigger. I want to get back into shooting this gun, but the trigger pull REALLY bugs me out. When I pull the trigger, my finger actually has to go well beyond 90 degrees to have the trigger break. The tip of my index finger is pointing back towards the grip at a 160 degree or so angle. The trigger is almost all the way back in the trigger guard when it breaks and fires. Is there anything I can do to either move the break of the trigger well forward so I don't pull back so much (really messes with my followups) or get grips with a much larger back strap so my hand is further back (basically reposition my index finger)? Any ideas here to help? If there are parts I can buy to help fix this, please let me know specifics!!

I am gonna say NO, nuttin from kahr to help youy. If u have had it that long, it must not have been tomuch of an issue vback in 97. Kahrs triggers by design as u know are long, I do no tthink at allthat you have the nypd trigger i that model either. so u have 3/8" triggger travel. U never stated any issues other than the loooong pull, so I have to assume all the parts aqre workling exactly as designed.
Not sure ur kahr is gonna fit the needs that today ur wanting. they IMO were never desiged due totghe long trigger system which is ur only safety on thegun to, as a real target gun... My comments are of no help to u I am sure but the gun is working correctly so we hav etoassume all is well..
U could buy the 5# streker sprig from wolffs gunsprings, it won';t shorter stroke butr will cut poundage for your K40 which is a nice drop in mod to.
Well, it wasn't an issue back in 97, but it took a lot of work to get used to the trigger. There are no other issues -- it works fine, just a very long pull. Does anyone know if there are any replacement grips that have a thicker back strap??

I have felt some Kahrs that have an unusually "far back" break point. Do you also have an abnormally large amount of take up in the trigger before you feel it start to engage the striker spring? This was present in both the instances where I have felt the issue.
Without the extra take up ... yours is probably as designed. If it does, than a new trigger bar and /or cocking cam might change that. It isn't under warranty, unless you bought it new back in 97. I think they were lifetime warranty back then. Otherwise buy the parts and go to a good smith, as the trigger pin will have to be pressed out ... maybe the pin for the cocking cam, also ... I don't remember.
Good luck

I haven't tried it myself yet, but some say your finger position for a semi-auto and revolver are different, unless your semi-auto has a dao trigger, then shoot it like a revolver. They say you should position your finger closer to the first joint. I've done some dry-firing and can say my sights stay on target more reliably doing it that way verses the middle of the pad. Only range time will confirm for me if it helps or not.
An interesting article on finger position: http://www.itstactical.com/warcom/firearms/you-want-me-to-do-what-with-my-finger/

1) The Kahr K9 is a smaller pistol. You will have to grip it differently than a full size service pistol. When I first got my CW9, I had trouble with that because I was so used to my Beretta 92 which was much bigger.
2) It is a DAO gun with a long pull trigger. It is that way by design. The long trigger pull IS the safety and allows the gun to be "simple to operate" for when the adrenalin is pumpin'.
3) I was always taught to use the pad or even tip of my finger to pull the trigger. I now know that it is true for marksman using rifles, or pistols with a short light trigger pull. But FOR ME, and for many others, the trigger can go into the first joint when shooting a "defensive" weapon with a long trigger pull. I quickly noticed a difference when I switched my technique... because the gun grip is very small, I was straining my hand to use the pad of my finger, then on top of that, my finger was pointing back by the time the gun went off (there was no way for it to move back parallel). The strain and the movement caused me to move the sights unintentionally. I changed my finger position, and saw an immediate difference!

I also just found this short article that mentions using the knuckle on small light guns with long trigger pulls...

The cool thing is you can read the whole magazine if you want. And all the back issues.
