Finally got my wife out to the "range" with me. Brought a p22 to break her back into the fun before moving up to the kahr. She did well getting used to shouting and the basics then wanted to jump up to the kahr. After the first shot (that was dead nuts for where she was aiming) there was a big smile across her face and she said "that's a lot more exciting!" I was full of hope for finally converting her to another crazy clinger like myself but, after the 2nd shot the first knuckle on her thumb was getting sore. I readjusted and tweaked her grip with every shot but after just one clip that knuckle was bright red and sore.

Long story short I have a hogue handall jr on it but it wasn't the grip itself it was where the frame rolls up around your hand just above the grip. Is there a way to remedy this without chopping the frame or will I have to try and find a gun to fit her tiny hands.

The knuckle closest to her hand?

Gloves!

My wife has pair of shooting gloves from Cabela's (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Clothing/Mens-Hunting-Clothing/Mens-Shooting-Clothing/Mens-Shooting-Gloves|/pc/104797080/c/104748480/sc/104563080/i/104001480/Cabelas-Leather-Handgun-Gloves/725699.uts) that she just loves.

The knuckle closest to her hand?

I don't understand how the knuckle of her thumb is being impacted by anything. Is she getting it too close to the slide?

TucsonMTB has a good suggestion!

Yes closest knuckle to the hand. Gloves won't work she hates gloves. Jfootin, not the slide but the part of the frame that sits flush with it.This is usually in the webbing of your thumb but her hand is small enough that that first knuckle just doesn't clear it.

Would she be able to hold her gun hand thumb down with her weak hand thumb?

That's what I do to stay clear of the slide release AND the magazine release button, especially on the larger calibers. The PM45 really was a challenge to stay away from those two things. It might help with her problem, too.

When I was breaking my CM9 last year, I had the same thing. The upper plastic part of the grip under the back of the slide was tearing up my the lower knuckle on the thumb of my right hand. I don't run 200 through it at a time anymore, but haven't had the issue since. And my grip was fine. You kind of adjust to it by not letting it flip as much.

I'll have to try these suggestions next trip.

Those look like a pretty good idea for practice, at least with the higher powered stuff. Thanks for mentioning them!

You are very welcome!

She only wears them occasionally, but when she starts to get a blister in a longer shooting session . . . they suddenly appear. http://home.mindspring.com/~justsomeguy/icon_lol.gif

Actually, I was thinking they might be a good idea for me. None of my semi autos bother me. But, when shooting hotter rounds in an LCR this weekend, my hand was feeling a bit battered between my thumb and forefinger.

As I've aged I've found that if I pay attention to moderating the things that hurt a little now, I hurt alot less in 10 years or so.

Reading the reviews on those gloves just got me thinking my hands might feel a bunch better in the years to come if I don't go out and pound them quite as much with pistols. Or, at least protect them better while I pound them!

Good point! :)

I know a lot of old timers who wish they had taken better care of themselves. The old joke is, "If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." In reality, there is a lot of truth there . . .

My trouble is that my hands immediately start getting hot and sweaty when I put on gloves. So I put gloves on my guns instead, preferably leather such as the Qwik-Grip on my CM9 and the Hogue Bantam grip on my J frame. I'm thinking about using the Traction Grip to add that rubber feel to my (on the way this week) new Glock 19 without adding hardly anything to the thickness. I may also get the Traction Grip for my TCP, which has been going naked except for a strip of hockey tape on the backstrap.

Maybe you should not give your guns feminine names? ;)
