We made sure we bought our AR15 before the election and our choice was a DD M4V5 with a 1:7 twist. Wow, what a great gun! We couldn't be happier.
But now for my question; What brand name 223 and 5.56 ammo do you suggest? We want to try a few brands before we sink a lot of $$$$ into a particular brand. Our goal is to buy the ammo before the election, so your suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks,

Depends on what the purpose is. Long term storage, most people would say to make sure that you get something with brass cases . I buy steel case for fun and brass for long term storage/cache. Additionally, if you plan to recycle your brass and reload, many say to stay away from ammunition with a Berdan primer as they can be more difficult to remove, and you can't reliably reload steel cartridges. I think most "made in USA" ammo is boxer primer, so it is generally good to go. Typically berdan primer ammo has the lacquer finish on the primer to help seal it. Additionally, most talking heads will say that with your barrel twist, the heavier the bullet, the more accurate out past 100yds. It will shoot the run of the mill 55 gr stuff fine, but when accuracy counts out to 300-400 yds, you need to have 62gr minimum or heavier.
My little bit o knowledge I can shed light on...

Hey rholmes69 thanks for the information. Our purpose is SHTF, but the DD M4V5 is a gun so we also want to shoot for fun.
Have you shot Federal 5.56 62 grain?
Also, we are considering an EOTEC XPS2-0 optic. Any opinion? I know it's not night vision compatible but those sights are really expensive.

It depends if FMJ or some defense round. For range fodder I have used LOTS of PMC and Federal. Whatever brass cased stuff I could get on sale.
I dont shoot steel in my AR's. Look hard and at times you can get brass cased 55gr. for less than $6 dollars for a box of 20.
Very good plan to stock up though.
Look at Palmetto State Armory. You can get good deals there at times by the case.

I have shot 50, 55, 62 and 77 grain in my YHM 1x7 twist. But the farthest distance I have ever been able to use is only about 120 yds. Well, I guess technically I have fired 36 and 40 grain as well (.22lr). At those distances, I didn't see a very large difference in accuracy. I only bench rest shot the 55 and 77 grain and only 5 rds of each with a bushnell 5 MOA 30mm red dot scope. I lined it up on the bull every time, and I had one flyer on the 55gr, all the shots were within about a 3in spread. The 77 grain was darn near 1.5in spread, I had one that I pulled slightly that ended up about 2in off center. Again, my SHTF ammo is 55g federal rounds that I scooped at Wally World for 5.97 a box of 20rds when I could find them. If I need to reach out further, I have a 30-06 and a 7mm rem mag that are my long distance go to's. I have a hard time envisioning a scenario or possibility with where I live to need to engage multiple targets at 300+ yards in a worst case SHTF scenario.
I know of Eotech, but I do not have any experience with using them. I am sure someone on here does and can chime in. I went ahead and spent the money I would have used on a high end scope and bought a .22lr conversion for my upper that saves me a vast amount of $ in training and plinking and allowed me to get more .223 to sock away. $120 for a used .22 kit (add another 30 or so for some extra mags). I would spend $150 on 500 rds of import steel case ammo to practice with. I can shoot 500 rds of .22 for $20 and learn the mechanics I need to while improving my familiarity with the rifle. If you would like to be able to shoot a couple thousand rounds through the AR yearly, then a .22 kit is a no brainer. Some people suggest getting a dedicated AR .22 upper or one of the .22 ar copies, it just made more financial sense to me to get the kit.

You spent good money to get a GREAT gun, so I would not go below 55. I have a DDM4V1 and only buy 62+ unless I am stuck. Congrats on a gun that will likely last you a lifetime. Great choice...IMO.
