Well after about 30 years of wanting one of these, I bought one yesterday at my evil local gun shop.
Stopped in on the way to the range. The shop is conveniently located on the road that I use to get to the range, so I always stop in to see what used guns or other shootin objects that he has in stock. Saw this and after about 1 min of debate, bought it for a good price plus the BX-25 mag that you see in the picture.
Since I was on the way to the range anyway, ran a bore snake down the barrel and proceeded to shoot (about 350 rounds worth). Very accurate at 25 yards using the installed sights. No windage adjustment needed. The only reason the vertical was off was my fault as it is difficult for me to see exactly where that front post is. When I finally got it, started to blow the center out of the target. BTW - no jams, no failures of any kind except for one dud round that didn't fire no matter how many times I ran it back through.
I am going to keep the gun just about stock, except for about 3 things or so. Going to make the bolt stop auto release (Youtube mod for free), install a bolt buffer pin (another Youtube mod for about 70 cents) and quite possibly look for a different set of sights that I can see better. I am undecided about mounting a scope on the gun. If I decide to mount a scope, I'll just keep the original sights.
Anybody have any experience with shoot through scope mounts on a 10/22?

I had a tough time seeing the factory sights on my 10/22 also. After a few times to the range I decided to go with a 2X TRU-GLO red dot scope. I can't see/use the original sights with it but that's no big deal. I like the Tru Glo because it's light in weight and doesn't make the rifle top heavy even with the standard 10 round mag in it. I could be wrong,it's been known to happen, but with the see tru mounts on it the scope might sit a bit to high to be comfortable.
Congrats on your new 10/22

Congrats on the new 10/22. My 10/22 compact is scoped and has been a tack driver when I do my part. I had to use some Alabama chrome and a koozie to raise the stock height a little bit though. It's wearing a Nikon ProStaff Rimfire in a Dednutz Game Reaper mount. http://www.opticsplanet.com/dnz-dednutz-ruger-10-22-1in-scope-mount.html (http://www.opticsplanet.com/dnz-dednutz-ruger-10-22-1in-scope-mount.html)
That's the combination that I used to get my rifleman patch at Appleseed.

Ruger 10/22 was my first firearm as a young boy growing up in the Mojave desert outside of L.A.
I still have fond memories of that gun.
Sawed off and polished stock into a pistol grip.
Shooting from the hip.
Empty shell casings ringing like rain off the rocks
as I sprayed the chalk outline of a bad guy on the near by canyon wall.
I can still hear a young teenage girl yell out "It's the Rifleman!"

I'm going to look into this. If the 2x works without having to turn the red dot on, it might be the way to go for me. Although, I do have a regular red dot and a 4X scope laying around at the moment.
Also, now remember that I did have some shoot through mounts on my 989 M2. Using the irons was OK but had to lift head too high for using the scope.
Thanks to all that replied. One thing that is disappointing is that I shoot this thing really well (at least I think so). Not that much of a challenge like my pistols, except for shooting longer distances where the bulls eye almost disappears to me at 25 yards and beyond. LOL
Melissa - took me a few seconds to think about what Alabama chrome was (duct tape) LOL Hey but whatever works.
Went and got the nylon bolt to cut down for the bolt buffer, looked at different scope mounts, Williams Fire sights, TruGlo sights, etc. Now I'm thinking about getting sling swivels and a sling. This thing is just as bad or worse than my 1911 for accessorizing.

I don't have a see through mount, but have an older Leupold 3x9. If buying today, I would probably get the Nikon scope for .22LR.
They are fun! Congrats.

Had a Bushnell 3x8 zoom on my 10/22 briefly.
Could effortlessly shoot coke bottle caps with it.
Never missed and it was horribly boring.
Took it off and never used it again.

Nice rifle!! Congrats:)
I'm not fan of see through mounts on these, but I do use the bolt buffer pin and it surely has prevented wear to those pin holes.
Sights wise, I use the factory front bead with a Williams peep sight. The aperture is large enough to pick the front sight up in lower light, but is still small enough for very accurate shooting.

I like the integral sight base on this page, but I'm not to thrilled with the look of their front sight on a standard barrel. However, I'm inclined towards building a version of their "Appleseed training rifle" (about mid page):

Greg - I'm thinking along the same lines at the moment. Seems that having a peep sight mounted on the rear of the receiver should give the best over all results for an "iron sight". Also, thanks for the link.

MW surveyor . I used the shoulder off a nylon bolt for a bolt buffer also, and even after thousands of rounds it shows no wear what so ever. As you mentioned the auto bolt release is also a good idea. Other than that and the red do mine is totally stock. Those Ruger and Butler Creek 25 round mags are great for putting a lot of rounds down range. They seem to work very well, (except for the plastic lipped mags, they are junk)but for accuracy I like using the 10 round rotary mags. I'm going to pick a few more of them up. I just never seem to be comfortable enough with the larger capacity mags in it. I always feel like it's in the way more than anything. Feel the same way about the Mini 14 and never use more then a 20 round mag in it,but prefer the 5 round mag. when shooting for accuracy. Sometimes more is just more and not always better.;)
FWIW, That Tru Glo 2x scope I spoke about does not have cross hairs it's just a red dot.

I have a set of TechSights on my 10/22, my eyes are too old to focus on the miniscule rear leaf, and, to be honest, getting so bad I can't see the front sight post. Anyway, they work very well but look a little hunky, especially the FSP.
After getting the TechSights I started researching other options and saw the Spud peep... that looks like the hot ticket. I had never seen the Williams peep... that looks even better, especially if it retains the factory FSP.

Charlie98,
Here's a shot of the 10/22's profile with the Williams sight installed:

....and the sight picture:

The peep will also work with the taller Williams front "Fire Sight". That brings me to a point: the sights can be bought as a set and I should mention that the Williams bead front sight is also taller than the stock Ruger sight. In fact, if the peep is bought individually, Willams states "A higher front sight is normally required -- usually .570. (http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/wgrs.htm) ". However, I didn't find it necessary to replace the factory front sight. Here's a video of a gent installing the "Fire Sight" set on a 10/22 very similar (identical?) to MW surveyor's rifle.I think you see that he ends up setting his peep higher than I do to compensate for his taller front sight:

Greg, looks identical.
Well, stuck here in Corpus Christi, TX and can't get started on the job here. Knew that I should have brought the new rifle and some tools!
One saving grace is that there will be a gun show in Robbstown this week end, so I'll go there tomorrow and see what all they might have for a 10/22. Not too sure of what else I "really" need for the gun outside of what I mentioned previously. I did pick up a set of Uncle Mike's QD super swivels and a sling on the way down here yesterday. Just happens to be a very large gun shop right on the highway. How convienient. :)
Popeye - I'll try to pick up some more 10 round mags if they are not selling for higher than I can get them in Houston. The 25 rounder is nice but I think I'm only going to use it when the gun is at the house.
I think I've decided to put on full fiber optic sights. Now just gotta decide between the Williams Fire Sights or the TruGlo. The Williams rear mounts on the reciever while the TruGlo rear installs at the original sight location.
I like that. Have peep sights on a half dozen lever actions. Never thought to put one on a 10-22. Duh. Thanks for the wake-up.
