Maybe I have a old Mk 40 stainless. I just took it apart, and the recoil spring is not captive. I had a heck of a time putting the inner spring in the outer one which sits in a " metal tube", and putting it back.

I looked at a disassembly video, and that Mk 40 looked like it had a captive recoil assembly like on a Glock and other models.

Is it possible to upgrade my spring system to put in some kind of captive assembly?
thank you for any assistance!

The MK recoil spring assemblies are captive. If yours is not I would guess that is a problem. I think they are about $15 from kahr's website.

The serial# on my mk40 is HA39XX and I bought it new about 18 months ago. Its recoil assembly is captive. Someone might have changed your out to non captive. I would just order a new one as stated previously.
