View Full Version : Trade for PM9?

I currently have a Walther PPQ 9mm that I absolutely love. However, I cannot find a way to carry it comfortably. I tried everything. After looking through numerous forums and doing some homework, it seems like a Kahr PM9 would be the perfect carry gun for me. I just don't know if I will regret trading the PPQ because that trigger is SWEET. Not to mention the best ergos of any pistol on the market. I just think if I get the PM9, it will become my daily carry and I probably will only touch the PPQ when I head to the range, which would make trading for a PM9 worth it. Which serial number PM9's are the most reliable? Opinions?
And what are the latest range reports on the PM9's biggest rival, the Kimber Solo Carry?

I couldn't answer on the serial number range for reliability. But I would suggest considering a CM9 as well as the PM9. I have a CM9 and it carries and shoots very well for me.
As for the Solo, I can pass along what my friend has told me. He's the head of the range operation where I shoot and has a truly extensive background in firearms in both the military and civilian worlds. He said the Kimber is incredibly picky on ammo and he was also disappointed that Kimber uses a lot of roll pins in the construction of the Solo. I was actually rather intrigued by the articles I initially read on the Solo but I passed on it and went with the CM9 instead.

I don't own a PPQ, but I hear they're nice. I was recently in the market for a PM9 as well, and posed a question here on the forum. Long story short, after much research and weighing opinions from folks on the forum I bought a CM9 instead. For me, I'm totally good with the decision at this point. The CM9 in my opinion is for the money a very good option, not that I think the PM is bad either. But considering the differences between the two, I couldn't justify the PM from a cost perspective. From a functional perspective for all practical purposes its the same gun minus some options that you may or may not find important. In the end, I didn't.
Not trying to talk you out of the PM, obviously do what you feel/want. But if I were you I would keep that PPQ and pick up the CM9. Just for reference, I bought mine off of Gunbroker for 322.00 plus ship FWIW. I say this having been in situations where I have sold something to fund another purchase. Nothing wrong with it, but I at this point regret letting some fine weapons go so I won't be doing it again. But maybe everybody has to go through it. Either way you go I imagine you'll like the purchase.
Just sayin:)

+1 on the CM9. But why trade the PPQ? Different guns for different uses. The PPQ is a good, high capacity gun for home defense. I have a CM9 and love it. I also have a J frame that I love to carry AIWB. And I have a Taurus TCP 380 as a backup and pocket gun. But I am in the act of purchasing a PPQ. It will probably not do much carry duty for me, but it will be my home defense, car gun, apocalypse gun and occasional cold weather carry gun.
I have two holsters on order for my PPQ:
A dual IWB with metal clips like the black one pictured here: http://www.rkbaholsters.com/IWB.html. This stable 2 clip holster will ride real thin and the clips are tuckable, making concealed carry a workable option.

A PJ OWB Holster (http://pjholster.com/?page_id=110) like the one pictured here: http://pjholster.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/PPQ_OWB1.jpg. This holster will be primarily for around the house and range use.

I agree about different pistols for different uses... if you can afford to hold on to it.

CM9 is not available to everyone. It's not legal in California, but PM9 is.

The way that you feel about your PPQ I can't see you trading it off. I just went through that with my Kimber 5 inch Eclipse. I wanted an EMP 9 so I sold the Kimber and got the EMP and am happy I did. I could justify selling the Kimber (which was flawless from day one) because it was too big for my hands and the EMP is perfect for me. Good luck with what you decide.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Money really isn't an issue so I guess I'll keep my PPQ. I'm much more interested in the PM9 over the CM9. I think the features of the PM9 are good enough to justify the higher price. I love that the PM9 has a match barrel. That alone makes it worth it to me. Now, let's hope this hurricane doesn't cost me any damages to the house so I'll have the extra cash to go order one at the gun shop after it passes.

IMHO a match grade barrel is pointless in a subcompact. It won't make the gun more "accurate," I believe all modern quality firearms are much, much, much more accurate than we can perceive and the weak link in the chain is the person shooting the gun. Also, you would generally use it in the 15, maybe 25 foot range...never at 45 ft or so id say. Even at 45 feet IMHO there wont be even close to a significant distance between the two barrels.
I guess what im trying to say is that comparing the accuracy of handguns is a moot point unless you're a top-notch IPSC competitior. Put different guns in a ransom rest and the differences in groups between them will be extremely close at 25 yards or so, with the ammunition used being the most significant factor. But please take my word with a grain of salt, Im not the most knowledgeable firearms enthusiast but strongly believe this to be true.
Not trying to brag, but Ive put 5 rounds through the same hole in the bullseye with my CM9 several times at a practical distance of 7 yards, although ive struggled to do this recently. (and taking my sweet time) I did the same with my friends Springfield XDM .45 at 50-55 feet, which i dont believe has a match grade barrel
BTW - Jocko also feels this way and he really knows his stuff.

Hey, that's fine. Go for the PM9. Especially if you want the great looking and durable DLC black finish and the factory night sights. But, IMO, it is a waste of money if you are just going to get the brushed stainless one with plain sights. In that case, the CM9 is definitely the way to go.

Both the PM9 and the CM9 are very good. Whether or not to spend the extra $$$ for the match grade barrel is a personal preference. It was worth the extra $$$ for me even though I am a newb to firearms and only a fair shot. I assume I will get better with practice. The match grade barrel might then be of more benefit to me. It all boils down to what is important to the purchaser and how much you are willing to spend on that option. "Waste of money" is in the eye of the beholder. Match grade barrel vs. mirror polished slide! Jus sayin!!! (quotes jocko)

I concur with the suggestion of the CM. I have my first Kahr and info on other forums overwhelmingly says the difference in barrels is insignificant on guns of this nature. My only concern is the ability to place night sights on he CM

keep the ppq, buy a pm9, if that's what you really want and can afford then the cm9 is a waste of your time imho...
the pm9 is a nicer pistol. functionwise, however, the cm9 is the exact same. so if you value function over beauty, go for the cm9. i've had a cm9 and really liked it. now i have 2 pm9s. i'm a fan of the dlc finish, and i just like the pm9 more than the cm9.
also own a ppq; it's a very nice pistol that will be with me for a long time. i still love my glocks, but the ppq is a keeper. you'll regret trading it. you can find a pm9 virtually anywhere; right now the ppq is extremely scarce. that fact alone speaks volumes on the ppq...

Yeah, I'm probably keeping the PPQ. It truly is a special pistol. I just want a PM9 so I have something comfortable to carry every day.
