when to replace parts

Is there a frequency written down on when parts should be changed? And which ones? I am getting close to 1000 rounds on my pm9.

Small guns usually need replacement of recoil springs before full size guns due to light slide weights and high cycle speeds (my P3AT says 500 rounds max on recoil springs). I replace my springs (all in the gun, as well as mag) once a year regardless round count, and regardless if I'm having problems. Cheap insurance, and no downtime with broken guns. My primary defensive guns get new recoil springs every 6 months, as I shoot the heck out of them.

Considering that getting 30,000 rounds out of the stock recoil spring on my newest gun isn't unheard of, I'm not going to bank my life on a spring with a high round count like that - way too risky.

Your owners manual should state when to replace them for preventive maintenence - call Kahr on Monday if your manual doesn't state.

So I called Kahr and talked to customer service today. He said that for the pm9 the recoil spring guide and recoil spring should be replaced every 1200 rounds and all the parts should be OK for a long while. He really didnt say anything about other parts needing replacing until problems come up.

Isn't there a guy on this list (Jocko?) who has 25 thousand rounds through his PM9? Seems I read that somewhere. It would be interesting to get his take on the subject.

I have never replaced one metal part in my PM9 and have 25,800 rounds down range. I have replaced recoil springs numerous times, I have not set round count to do so. I just get a wild hair and do it. I do shoot the 22# recoil spirngs in my PM9 just because I do like that extra 2# of recoil absorption. again not necessary.

I have replaced my striker sping one time and that was to install the 5# striker spring that wolffs makes for the kahrs. I don't think u will wear out a striker spring. Again cheap to replace also

the trigger spring up front and that spring on the trigger bar, I have never touched. If it isn't broke, leave it alone. they will not wear out either.
I have never replaced that little slide lock spring since I bought the gun, If one is careful about installing the slide lock lever, that little springhy will not wear out either. I try not to mess in that area as that little screw that holds that springhy in place screws right into the polymer and taking it out to much might just strip those polymer threads.

I replace the magazine springs as I get that wild hair again and I always use the wolffs 5% more strength magazine springs, as I do feel that little extra strength will indeed help with the slide locking open on the last round. I wish they made 10% extra strength even.

kahrs are built like a brick sh-t house. as good as any glock out there. The kahr slide is damn near a copy of the glock slides, so they did it right. I have never read of a cocking cam ever breaking on any kahr, so that area is just a clean and oil and nothing more.

I doubt if most will ever shoot 20,000 rounds out of their kahr or for that matter most any other gun, but that being said a kahr is a gun u can shoot until the cows come home. they are just that well made. My Pm9 pictured on this forum under Jocko's custom PM9 at the time had 20,000 rounds through it and as u can see, it looks totally new,no wear, no scratchs, sldie is still IMO very tight, no rattles and it rides in my front pocket 24/7.

recoil springs, magazine springs are the cheapest insurance u can do for you gun. replace as u see fit for the shooting u do also.. YMMV:smash:
