This shish is so addicting. Just bought 5th Kahr. It is a MK9 Elite 03 and it is so beautiful! I just want to hold it. For about 17 seconds, I contemplated thinking the heard, but can't do it. I feel like a hoarder. I'm going to spoil her with some new wood grips, but not sure if I want smooth. I bought a MK9 (6th Kahr in past year) for my father-in-law with smooth and they looked great. Any opinions on the checked version? Smooth did seem thick and slippery.
Then I will be done...maybe...not.:D
~~ I feel like a hoarder. ~~
Just think of it as doing your part for economic recovery.

I Like the checkered myself. See pictures on "Before and after Wood". Cherkering adds to a secure grip plus it just looks elegant.

I've found that with a checkered front strap, or stippled I suppose would be as good, you can get away with a smooth grip.
But checkering really enhances the grip quality, even the half checkered you see from time to time add enough to be functional.
I think checkered grips would be the same thickness as smooth, just not slippery.
Looking at the grip screws it sure looks like they could be slimmed down considerably to me. I've not see the factory wood grips in person so can't say for sure but it looks like it.

I found a MK40 at my LGS a month ago, almost pulled the trigger but just didn't want the snap that was going to come with this cal and size. But when I find this model in 9mm I'll be all over it.
I don't think you can go wrong with either grip, they both are great looking...enjoy.
My next, TP45, and I don't know why... just because.

If you mean the head diameter, the wood grips' are the same. The head height is normal. I think there could be less material under the head, but I am not sure if the grips would split. I know the wood is hard, but does that mean it also splits? Not sure.

I probably wouldn't remove any wood under the head unless there's a lot. I would just remove wood so the head is more flush and not buried so deep.
Going too thin does add the risk of cracking, that mostly depends on the wood and mostly the grain.

Not to jack this thread or anything...but...HI BAWANNA...I'm Baaaaaaaack...:D:D:D
I agree on needing enough meat below the screw heads. 1911 screws are fairly thin and you have to "listen" when tightening them.
For me, my 1911 SS screws with your grips are still tight and looking good!

Glad to see you found your way home. Wondered where you been?
I usually try to leave the screw mount area as supported as I can so tightening while still a concern is still a little more forgiving.
Most often a crack is a flaw in the wood. I nearly finished grips including hours of checkering only to find a tiny crack I hadn't noticed. A heart breaker right there, that's what that is.
Glad yours are still holding up.

The back surgery was a bit more detailed than first thought but thankfully no fusion, pins or screws. The initial recovery took about 15-1/2 weeks whereas the rest could be up to 2 years...but I am walking upright again with only nagging leg pain and am back at work.
My shootin' is getting back up to snuff too! :D
Doggon it! I jacked the thread...again. :typing:
I will take better pics of your fabulous MK9 grips soon..plus I should PM you about some more for a 1911 project of mine...
