View Full Version : Oil or grease for carry CW and PM9

Just like the title asks...Should I be using oil or grease on my carry guns Kahr CW9 and PM9?
Will oil accelerate the wear on the polymer rails?
Which is better for carry, and attract less crud?
Both of my pistols work equally as well with CLP as the cleaner/lubricant or Tetra Gun grease. I have pro gold grease which I have not tried yet.
Any theories about CLPs "teflon coat" after the solvent carrier evaporates....
Any and all info/takes/thoughts would be appreciated.

The slide rides on the steel inserts imbedded in the polymer. After a few rounds the polymer should not wear regardless of oil or grease.
I use grease on the rails and pretty much oil every where else.
I used oil only for many years so I don't think it really makes all that much difference. The grease stays in place a bit better.
Just keep it lubed as needed and it'll all be good.

+1 on what ba wanna said. I used grease for a while and now I'm back to a light oiling since everything is broken in now and clean and re-oil more often. Oil seems to run smoother to me but it doesn't last as long.

I only oil mine and have not had any problems. I pretty much follow the guide from the tech section.
I've gone back and forth, often trying slick and expensive newfangled products.
In the last year, I've used Ballistol, nearly exclusively. I figure if it's good enough for Hickok45, it's good enough for me.

I've always oiled mine, but not wet. I have just started using a little Outer's gun grease on the rails as it holds up longer than oil.

good lubricants. What Bawanna says is about perfect IMO. I like Hickok45 but If he said sex with dogs was good,, not sure I would be standing in the NEXT line.

I run oil on mine, (have since i got it) and it runs great. I just stick with the free bottle of Weaponshied I got from them a while back (yep free, and in a sweet lil applicator bottle) and things seem to be going great several thousand rounds later. :D

Most of my guns start life getting a Militec 1 treatment. This is a dry lube used to great sucess by our military in the islamic wars of late. Oil tends to evaporate over time and migrate to places it isn't needed, so I oil only the small parts that need only a drop. I use TW25b light grease on all heavier bearing points. On the Kahrs that includes the rails and cams. This product seems to remain where I put it and simply doesn't evaporate at any measurable rate.
Any quality lube will work. I've found that a combination of the "dry lube" along with traditional "wet lube" in small quantities ensures slick and easy functioning, attracts or holds very little gunk and lasts a long time.

I use Tetra oil on most everything and Tetra grease on the steel rails and grooves. I try to dry off the excess oil and wipe the grease off the exterior after a bit of racking the slide to distribute the grease.

Grease is nothing but oil with a thickening agent added. If you live where the temp drops below freezing use oil. If you live in a warm climate you can use grease. Grease will retain dirt and can accelerate wear. The choice is yours.
Just like the title asks...Should I be using oil or grease on my carry guns Kahr CW9 and PM9?
Not a fan of grease...have used BFCLP since day 1 without issues.
Recently switch to Tetra oil because I have some on hand.
Will oil accelerate the wear on the polymer rails?
No...I have none.
Which is better for carry, and attract less crud?
Thin coat of oil will attract less crud.
Both of my pistols work equally as well with CLP as the cleaner/lubricant or Tetra Gun grease. I have pro gold grease which I have not tried yet.
I have a tube and 3/4 left of Tetra grease I won't use, in my testing it accelerated corrosion.
Any theories about CLPs "teflon coat" after the solvent carrier evaporates....
IMO...if it’s a carry weapon...it should be cleaned at least every two weeks.
A thin coat of CLP will generally stay wet that long…no worries.

There are several synthetic oils that can carry the loads of grease so why grease?
One quart of Mobil 1 will likely last you a lifetime.

I use mobile one 0w-30 synthetic oil on all my gun a little goes a long way. Make it real slick.. It cleans good also.

Well, we've probably beat this one up enough but here's my .02 cents worth. I have used BFCLP as cleaner and lubricant and it always has worked great and kept my guns in working order. Some time back, had a concealed carry class instructor tell me he liked that too but added a small amount of TW25 to the rails, so I''ve started adding that too. Then wipe of any excess. Seems to work fine but then I never had a problem before either.
All these responses seem to say, keep it clean and lubed and you can't go wrong. :D

If you have sex with a dog do you use grease or oil as a lubricant? My rottweiler is looking sideways at me. :)

I'm using Slip2000 on everything.
My Glock Armorers manual says a few drops of OIL in a very few spots.

I've been using Phlegm 2000 made by Hack & Hocker for years but if I'm a little low Mobil 1 5w30 works fine too and a bottle lasts a lifetime....

why do I prefer TW25 grease??? I pocket carr and I don't want to stain anywhere. Other than that I am sure any oil will do the same job, just that IMO oil will not stay were applied and will always run downward. Grease over time might indeed do the same,I just can't say. I don't over lube my PMJ9 either. I have no doubt it would fire off 7 rounds totlaly dry even. it is just that smooth, but my little mind tells me some lube is better than no lube. Just sayin

We went from winter to late spring in a day here in Kansas. Wednesday was a perfect day for outdoor shooting. Took off work and spent the afternoon shooting 6 handguns. Evening spent cleaning only 2 (ran out of time).
How this relates to this thread: I decided to tear down the slides of my PM9 and G26 gen4. I have been using TW25b on the slides. Cleaned both slides with brake cleaner before taking them apart. I was shocked to find the TW25b had turned to a crusty white film following contact with the brake cleaner. Took awhile to get it cleaned off. Used Gunslick Pro oil (that's all I had around) after I put it back together. I'm going to rethink TW25b for my use in the future. Seemed to lubricate well. I just don't like the extra cleanup work.

thats odd, I spray clean all my kahrs with high ressure none cholorinated brake cleaner and all I ever use is TW25 and I have never noticed this at all.

I'm cleaning with the same brake cleaner (learned it from you - THANKS).
The build up was mostly along the slide rail grooves along the sides of the slide. In the "corners" of those grooves. I never noticed the buildup until after I cleaned using the brake cleaner. Then it turned chalky white. I used a stiff nylon brush to remove it. The brake cleaner removed all residue from the areas where I used oil.
I think the TW25b is a very good lube. The clean up time is my concern. I still have 4 more waiting for me!

Just keep using your CLP and until you find a reason not I would not change. I use Weaponshield CLP and have never had any problems

Hey, Mr. Getsome! I thought it was funny, even if nobody else seemed to notice. http://home.mindspring.com/~justsomeguy/icon_lol.gif
Threads like these are always fun and may be the reason there are so many different bottles and tubes on a shelf near where I do most of my gun cleaning.

I use 40W Wolf's Head Aviation oil. It worked great in my '68 Chevelle S/S with the 350 H.P. 396 V-8. If it's good enough for my Chevy it's good enough for my Kahr. I hope that last statement wasn't too, confusing.

Mil-Comm. I use both, grease and oil, depending on the parts.
Jocko turned me on to this product and I've never turned back. It is a compatible system that works and lasts. Thanks Jocko.

By the way...It is not really a question with a right or wrong answer. Just asking what we think. Both grease and oil products will work. Any good product will do the job. Keep it clean and protected. Use whatever you are confident in and has proven to work for you.

oil or gease. one is gonna run "in time". if u pocket carry, I would not have much oil anyhwere in my PMJ9. Both will serve u well . IMO u cannot beat TW25 by Mill-comm. gut they are all good. I have no doubts what so ever that once u get ur kahr running great, u can carry it dry and never worry about the lube part. Any gun that won't go 10 rounds dry is not a real gun. JKust sayin
Depending on what area needs to be lubricated, I've never found a need to use anything other than a combination of TW-25b and Shooter's Choice FP-10 on any of my firearms except...
Lubriplate 130-A on my M1 Garands and M1A-NM. ;)

Cleaning agents:
1) CLP spray
2) Auto store blue paper towels
3) Shooters choice grease
4) air compressor
5) eye pro
6) dust mask
7) old piece of clothing
8) hoppes #9
9) hoppes gun oil
Cleaning process:
1) After shooting, I spray CLP all over it and go to coffee an read a gun magazine.
2) take air compressor to blow off any knook and crevice (wearing eye pro and dust mask) using a old piece of clothing as a back stop wrapped about the gun to keep particles from splattering all over. Wipe off well with auto paper towel.
3) repeat step 1.
4) repeat step 2.
5) Clean barrel w/ hopes #9 and when finished, thin wipe of gun oil inside of barrel.
6) use shooters choice grease very thinly on any metal/metal contact points.
7) the magazines are broken down and wiped off w/ auto towels and w/ a hint of oil, then dried off like a sun baked bone.
