View Full Version : How NOT to clear an obstruction!!!

This fella came into the store today to replace the barrel on his Remington 11-87. Not such an odd occurance, right?

Well, once we saw the barrel we understood WHY he wanted to replace it, aside from the fact that it didn't have screw in chokes. Seems he somehow poked the barrel into some mud and got just a tad bit of mud into the bore.

I'm going to assume he tried to clean it out with his finger or a stick or by some other method. When he got as much of the gunk out of the barrel as he could he did what most folks would never do. Rather than remove the barrel to get the rest out he decided to remove the rest by shooting the shotgun (in a safe direction, I'm sure) and took special measure to hold it out away from his body and turn his head away.

Here are the results (sorry for the crappy cell phone pics):

Sell him a new barrel. Cut the old one down to legal limit... for defense!~

Nope, just BEAT that maroon over the head for doing something that makes gunowners look stupid.

People that stupid should not be allowed to reproduce. In fact they need to be strapped to a chair and spoon fed pamblum until they expire.

hard to believe...I mean if that much pressure was built up to segment the end of the barrel as it did, what would it have done to the receiver?

Seems to me that the bolt would have been a projectile as well...

Either that was a 48" barrel or the photo was photoshopped with a fake split end inserted in an unsplit barrel for effect. note the pictures do not show the actual bend in a perfect 4 way split of the barrel. It is conviently hidden. I call BS. :7: No shotgun has that long of a barrel.

Sheesh. If I had done something like that, I woulda bought the barrel without saying why and installed it myself. :)

No photo shop. The split ends are about 5" to 6" in length. I'd say the barrel was of standard length which is what? 26" or 28"? The young lady in the picture stands perhaps 5' 2" I say, and that might be giving her an inch or two.

You can choose to believe or not. Doesn't make a difference to me.

The sad thing about the whole deal is that this wasn't a young guy. I'd say he was in his late 30's/early 40's. My guess is Darwin has somehow missed him all this time but might be coming to visit very shortly if he doesn't learn from his mistakes.

I've seen pictures of this type of thing before, as most of us have, but this it the first time I've seen it with my own eyes.

No, the receiver was quite safe in this situation. Debris in the barrel will cause a goose-egg in rifle barrel, a ring in a revolver and some pistol barrels, other pistol barrels split.. or do both. Shotguns, with their thin steel barrels, do what you see there. Sometimes you just "lose" the end of the barrel.

Receivers fail when the obstruction is almost directly in front of the chamber - rifles or shotguns, or when ammo fails with a rupture of the case.

I'll take your word for it, don't think I want to try this out for myself.

I would imagine the laundry need to be done after he touched that one off!!!

LOL, damn. Funny pic. Personally, I'd have removed the barrel and stuck a stick down the receiver end of it to push the mud out of the exit end.

I'm guessing that the guy has seen enough videos of military tests where they submerge a rifle into mud/water/sand/other element, and then immediately fire it, sending the mud/etc spraying out of every opening as it successfully fires into the target. Probably figured his rifle would behave the same way and clear the mud jam without issue. I'm also guessing that he didn't read the "Do not attempt to try this at home, kids" warning attached to every movie/tv show/video where they do something potentially unsafe....
