I'm looking to add a .22 LR to the SHTF armory. I want something very simple, semi-auto, reliable and accurate. Planning to buy a boatload of ammo. This will be my last resort rifle. If I don't kill the attacker, I can at least pi$$ them off and make them bleed before I go down. I have a bolt action already to club them in the head.

Suggestions on a good one?

Rifle--Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 , absolutely reliable and perhaps the most accurate .22LR autos out there, available in many configurations. and is priced right. For at tactical type 22 have a look at S&W M&P15-22 or Mossberg 715T are fine rifles.
Pistol--Ruger MarkII or Browning Buckmark for autos. S&W K-17 for revolver that is pricey but excellent. Ruger makes and SP101-22 revolver that is nice also.

Ruger 10/22.
Super reliable and deadly accurate.
Personally preferred CCI Stingers in the gun.

I have been looking at the Henry US Survival Rifle (formal name: U.S. Survival AR-7). It is only 16.5" when stowed and weighs 3.5 lbs.

Cute, small, stowable and fairly inexpensive, but accurate and reliable is not how I'd describe the AR7.

The HK 522 and 416-22, made by Walther, are getting very good reviews in both reliability and accuracy. More money but high quality.

The new break-down Ruger 10/22 may be a good choice.

I like the S&W 15 22 I just got my son. Shot about 1k rounds through it, with just a couple of duds, but that was the golden bullets, not the guns fault.

M&P 15-22 and Ruger 10/22 are both good choices. I use the M&P for cheap training on an AR style platform. Both guns love the blue Federal bulk packs.

For lightweight, either the Henry US survival rifle, the 10/22 w/ a Blackhawk Axiom stock, or maybe even drop back to the Ruger 22/45 lite.

I'm planning a 10/22 w/ the Blackhawk Axiom as my next purchase.

Model 60 is one of the most accurate .22's right out of the box. The micro-groove barrel is phenominal. I'm talking hitting dimes at 50 yds.

The 10/22 is one of the most customizable weapons ever.

Both great choices.

I just got a 10/22, and took it to the range this morning. Love it. I have some M1 sights and a sling coming in the mail.

gsg522 - as a clean gun it is more reliable than my 1022 and rem597, dirty gun? don't know... plus its retractable stock is tactical enough for close encounters...

love all my 10/22's.

I've got three of them.

They are... just amazing rifles that can be tweaked and tuned and modded into almost anything the .22 rimfire can do. You'll only get "so far" with accuracy compared to a match grade bolt gun, but they are way more accurate than most folks can hand hold, or even shoot from a bench.

1022 is very sturdy... i use it as a walking stick all the time while climbing and hiking... still shoots straight...

that said... i get bored of it fast and had to find kit after kit just to keep it alive...

I bought a Ruger 10/22 Takedown a few months ago. Put a cheap little red dot scope on it and picked up a couple of Ruger's BX-25 magazines (25 rounds). It's a ton of fun to shoot, accurate as can be. I absolutely love it. And as folks have pointed out, there's a whole sub-industry of customizations and parts available. Ruger didn't sell millions (!!!!) of them for no reason. :)

You want good accuracy and no frills - get a Marlin.

You want to go hog wild with accessories and easy reloading (magazines instead of a tube) - get a 10/22

So far on my 10/22 that I was going to keep stock - I've modified the bolt hold open, stoned the trigger group, added sling swivels and sling, got two more 10 round and two more 25 round mags and waiting on the peep sight to come in. Then I'm done, no really then I'm done. (could be a folding stock in the future though)

I agree the M60 is the best general purpose semiauto .22 on the market. My personal addiction to the 10/22 is driven by ammunition feed design. The 10/22's compact mag feed is convenient and independent of barrel length. I prefer carbines.

In addition to all of the good suggestions given thus far, I suggest you read through this thread http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14741 in which Chief Joseph is deciding on a first gun for his son.

My recommendation is for the S&W 15/22, which certainly meets your stated requirements.

I am personally not a big fan of the 10/22 for reasons I have stated in that other thread, but I will not deny that it is a time-tested high quality piece of equipment, and if you pay extra for the takedown model, would still meet your requirement of "compact".

Good luck!

My vote didn't do any good in the election, so I'll cast my vote here for the M&P 15-22. More expensive than my Ruger 10/22T and the 25 rd magazines are bigger, but I like the AR form-factor, adjustable stock, and accessory capability (even if not used in the pictured version, which is an old photo prior to installation of the AFG2, Aimpoint H-1, and sling), and it subjectively feels a lot "handier" than my 10/22.

Looks like everybody had a favorite. Imagine that. I've got a Ruger 10/22 with fairly cheap scope that I shoot at silhouette range. It's incredibly accurate for a semi auto. I've got a BSA Martini target rifle that only is fractionally more accurate that the 10/22. Only problem I've had with 10/22 is high cap mags seem to be less reliable but the rotary mags are flawless. Also got a Henry lever .22 that is a lot of fun and has a pretty high capacity too.

22's are generally cheap enough that if you don't like what you get, you can move it out on gunbroker and get something else and not cost yourself much.

:DJust found some guy who wanted to sell AR-15, G26 and Ruger 10/22 Target for a great packaged price. He is getting married and I'm deep into my 2nd and it is all BLISS! I can unload the others and have the Ruger for free and more.

I will get to have the Ruger, really test drive the G26 vs my M&9c and decide between my AR-15s. I may keep both ARs for now. Nothing like having 15 PMAGs. The Ruger also has 4 10rd and a 25rd mag.

I feel like it is Xmas. AND, USPS delivered my new Benelli SBE2 today. Life is grand, and you cannot have too much these days.

Isn't it sweet when a plan comes together?
You can't lose with a Ruger 10/22.

When I wanted a H&K HK45C LEM?
A HK45C DA/SA, and a relatively rare HK45C DA/SA LEM conversion kit,
just dropped in my lap "so to speak".

Sometimes things just work out.
Somethings are just meant to be.

Congratulations!

1022 is good survival gun: hardy and will survive...

not a range gun tho... magazine loading is painful... gun itself is alive with aftermarkets kits...

enjoy

The Target model of the 10/22 is a beautiful and fairly accurate weapon - I have one and like it a lot - but it doesn't seem like what you said you were looking for. The thick .920 target barrel is a lot heavier than the normal barrel; it doesn't have any iron sights at all because it assumes use of a scope; the wood stock is fairly heavy as you might want in a target rifle; the long skinny curved plastic 25rd mag seems fragile when hanging off the bottom of a relatively heavy rifle (while the small 10rd ones are fine); and it's generally not what I would consider a "handy" rifle. Very nice for target shooting though, and I suppose hard to argue when it is part of good bargain.

I totally agree with you! The worst case scenario is that I sell the G26, 10/22 and AR-15, and I end up with a LOAD of free ammo and a few extra dollars. There are several other scenarios that leave me with all 3 guns, 2 guns or 1 gun. I can always work toward a second 22LR of some sort if I don't like the Target model. The options are endless and sometimes desire is dictated by what lies in front of you! :D

Just for our amusement... here's a modified AR7 that I saw listed for sale near me. An "Israeli survival rifle" is how the seller described it. Interesting.

There indeed was a variant of the AR7 sold to the Israelis. I believe they did some further mods; such as the FAL style pistol grip, wire stock, and shortened barrel. The one in the photo has a welded on "muzzle brake" ahead of the front sight to bring it to 16 inches of barrel length for sale in the US.
