This is beyond the call of duty but what upsets me is the comment that this was a PR ploy by NYPD to bolster their image in light of many bad things they have been accused of recently. Does everything have to be so complicated. REALLY?

I don't buy that PR thing either, just a good cop going beyo0nd his call of duty. JohnQ Citizen couldhave done the same thing with no PR what so ever. Its done all the time in my places. My hat is off to this officer.

I just hope to hell I don'thave to eat my words and find out this was a totl NY PR thing.

+1 God Bless Officer DePrimo for his unselfish and compassionate act in this Christmas season....I do not feel this was a PR stunt at all but a simple act of one decent and caring human being seeing another person in need and doing something about it...

Stories like this are are reassuring and remind us there are still good people in this crazy old world....Thank God there are fine examples of young Police Officers like NYPD Officer DePrimo out there that really do "Protect and Serve"

It probably happens a 100 times a day. We just got fortunate enough to get word of this one. My hats off to the officer too. He did a good thing.

If I was the officer I would have given the homeless guy a boot, too. Right square in the....., but I digress. This cop is an enabler. Now the guy will have warm feet when he panhandles. He probably sold his shoes for a bottle of wine, or had them stolen after he passed out from drinking his last bottle of wine. He didn't do this guy any favor and he didn't do his job. He should have gotten him off of the street.

How so out of curiosity. I agree with what you said although he was a nice guy for doing it. Certainly better to take care of the losers on a local level than have obummer in charge of giving away free sheet to half the population.

He should have directed him to the nearest shelter or arrested him for loitering. It may not be a problem where you live Bawanna, but I'm sick of being accosted for money by drunks, addicts and near-do-wells They urinate in doorways and in general cause problems for the entire population. With all of the billions spent on the war on poverty they're still casualties. God helps those who help themselves. These people aren't even making an attempt.

How true...here in Austin the panhandling is way out of control. You see them begging at every corner, I've even seen them get made if you don't give them what they want. Frickin pathetic...

I'm sure his heart was in the right place but if the cop wanted to do something meaningful he should of helped out at a shelter for battered women or something.

this was a nice gesture and certainly not a solution to or a perpetuating of the state of the homeless. That is a subject for another thread. I think we can all agree that if everyone did a "pay it forward" thing for most people(not just the homeless and not just during the holidays)the world would be a nicer place to live. Just hearing a hello, goodbye, and thank you would be a start. I hope that in our effort to be safe and protective from the boogie man, we do not get too cynical and can still be compassionate and caring also. After all, if we can better take care of each other (read govern ourselves), we do not need the government to do so much of it for us.

"I think Muggsy's secret name is Mister Grinch!"

I can't help it. I'm one of those heartless conservatives capitalist who wants to see America return to its roots. I believe in working for a living and personal responsibility. I believe in a hand up not a hand out. I didn't vote for Obama or for his social welfare programs or gun bans. I earned what little I have and the government took half of it. A good portion of my money went to people who sleep on the streets and urinate in doorways. Cops aren't supposed to be social workers. While he was buying boots someone was being mugged.

We don't have any trouble with bums here in Round Rock because they aren't allowed to panhandle on the streets. In fact, I've only seen one in the 17 years we've been here - he was panhandling at 620 & I-35 one morning - and wwas gone by the afternoon.

Austin has made itself a "sanctuary city" and a mecca for bums.

I'd say that I'm aligned with those views, but where I draw the line on libertarian-ism is their views on drug legalization and homosexual marriage. I believe that we need limited government, not anarchy. That's why our founding fathers set up the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as they did.

Yeah we are just concerned with the welfare portion of the above discussion. So really you are not as cold hearted as you originally proclaimed. Instead, can I say, you are against how charity is currently mandated through our governmental welfare system and not against the concept of charity itself. Am I correct?

I have no problem with charity for those who are struggling and who are in need. I don't see the government as a charitable institution. Charity isn't taking from one group and giving it to another. That's called theft. Charity is giving of ones self. If this officer wanted to be charitable he should have done it on his own time and not while he was on duty. While on duty he should have been enforcing the vagrancy and loitering laws.
