View Full Version : K9 Slide Stop Lever Issue

I'm looking at picking up a new CCW and am bouncing between a K9 and a T9, so I was over at my parents and decided to manhandle my Dad's K9. I unloaded the gun, played around with it sufficiently, and went to load it back like he had it, and this is where I noticed a problem.

With the gun empty, I pulled the slide back and locked it open. I slid in the magazine and went to sling shot my slide closed and nothing happened...it stayed locked open. I went to push down the slide stop lever with my thumb, and it felt like trying to drop it on an empty mag (WAY more pressure than it needed). I drop the mag, and then start monkeying around with the gun. I can't sling shot the slide without manually pushing down the slide stop, even with no magazine installed. The slide operates normally loading rounds from the magazine (not locking open) and locks open properly with an empty magazine. I loaded it back up by putting the magazine in with the slide closed and sling shotted it.

So what is broken? Is it the slide stop lever spring or just the lever itself? For going to the range or even in a defensive situation the gun will function just fine, other than the fact you can't get the slide to drop without using the slide stop lever (pulling the slide back a tiny bit and hitting it with your thumb is the easiest), and it was possible to get it to shut with the lever, you just had to push really really hard.

Doubtful its the slide lock spring. The K series has a pretty decent solid spring system, not delicate like the poly frame guns.

If the lever comes back down on it's own when you lift it the spring is good.

I'm leaning towards where the lever and the slide hit together with the lever up. Maybe a rough spot or jagged edge.

Well, if you're holding the slide back, and push the lever up, it stays up with no pressure against it....

take the slide off and reinsert the slide stop lever andnow play with it (the slide stop lever I mean). Push it up and it should return by itself... There was i the pasrt few days a nice photo of a K9 showing what the slide stop spring should look like if it is OK.

Maybe alittle polish on the slide lock pin and the barrel lug to be asured there is no burrs causing stoppage.. With the gun empty and no magazine the slide stop should not engage PERIOD. My thoughts are ur slide stop spring (rod) is possable broken, out of what. With an empty mag in the gun, u still cannot slingshot the slide, u need to push downon the slide stop

IMO. U have a bad slide stop spring, possably broken

course what do I know other than the colts won in the last second of the game.Felt sorryt for Detroit, course not to fokking sorry.

Without the slide, the slide stop lever stays where you put it, whether that's up or down. It looks like the spring engages ok....looking at it right now

Polishing on the lever where it contacts the frame is helping a bit, plus I think the groove the spring sits in is a bit wore. Overall it's mostly working now...

It should be very positive down pressure. Is the spring on the right side properly in it's little groove?

Friction on the frame or moving parts shouldn't slow it down at all. Maybe that spring got displaced or it's bad.

Maybe a picture looking down at the top of the frame?

I never heard of one breaking but guess it could happen.

The spring is fine. I think overall the gun was just sticky. I worked and polished and oiled and got it working pretty good. It isn't as sharp fully seated as when it's about a 16th of an inch from being seated....so i really think part of it is the groove in the lever is worn a bit so there isn't as much pressure against the lever, but overall I now have it working.

Not so's one would notice really. Kind of a beg and hope for the best proposition at best for me.

I'm more than willing to help with pulling if needed but not sure it amounts to much.

I reckon if people didn't talk about me behind my back they probably wouldn't talk at all. I try not to dwell on it. He's a good boss, I'm must a lousy worker bee. What I lack in PC and knowledge I try to make up for with charm and natural good looks but I don't think that's working too good either.

Don't be looking for me on the KT forum anytime soon though.
