I've got a CM40 that has an issue, it randomly locks back when there are still rounds in the chamber. I went shooting today with a couple of guys far more experienced than myself on an outdoor range that they are fixing to open up soon, and showed them. It's not my grip, and it's not a magazine follower issue either, as I previously thought it was. The first time I went to shoot it, the mag follower broke after about 120 rounds or so, and i had a few unexpected lock-backs afterwards that i attributed to that. However, i have a new follower in and it is still in one piece, and the lockbacks still randomly happen, with both full metal jacket rounds and remmington home defense jacketed hollow points. We noticed that the slide stop doesnt seem to have much tension, and moves pretty freely on it's own. Am I correct in thinking that the slide stop could be moving from the recoil and popping up to catch the slide as it comes back down? Sometimes I can go all six rounds without it happening, other times it'll happen twice, once 3 times.

INDEED, TIGHTEN UP THAT LITTLE SPRING. i THINKIT TAKES A #6 TORX. tHERE IS A NICE PHOTO TUTORIAL ON the KAHR TECH SECTION BY WYN OR gb6491. soon after I post this one of the good guys here will post the photo.

I think your little spring is to loose and it is taking the downward tension off that slide stop lever. pROBABLY NOT THE ISSUE EITHER BUT CHECK TO SEE THAT the rounds are not hitting the inside of the slide stop lever either. Very easy to check that out, . with slide lock back just insert a loaded mag and see if the top round is engaging that slide stop lever.

When that 40 goes bang there is just one hell of an explosion there and things might move that ordinary u could never see or make it do either. Be very sure it is not the shooters thumb either. Try left handed to check and eliminate that possability..

gb6491 here go, scroll on down from this thread and ur gonna find a nic e photo tutorial and how to adjust if needed andf also a nice video by GB.

U gotta start somewhere eliminateing things..

If the slide lock is being engaged by the next round and you choose to take a little off the slide lock...GO EASY! It is very easy to take too much off. If you take too much off, the slide will not lock back after last round. Although it is better to get all 6 shots off before an issue, it is still an issue and you'll need a new pin. How do I know? I have a new slide lock pin for my P380.

Watch the Kahr take down video with emphasis on the slide lock pin and spring.

And look at the pictures and info on the helpful links:

This little spring is easy to damage in several ways and it can be too loose, also. Use a number 6 Torx bit and tighten the screw holding the washer over the spring. I just use my fingers rather than the screwdriver handle to preclude ruining the PLASTIC threads with the METAL screw. The free end of the spring to the right should rest in the small ledge/groove on the back of the slide lock lever. It pushes the slide lock down until the empty magazine follower pin pushes it up to lock the slide back on the last round or empty magazine... and by design, it's hard to pull the lever down or unlock the slide on an empty magazine... and easy with rounds remaining in the mag.
There's a procedure for inserting the slide lock pin correctly and should be watched, read, and studied before trying to assemble the pistol!

If you don't get the pin through the kidney-shaped hole in the lug under the barrel, you could jam up the pistol and require grinding off the slide lock lever or returning the pistol to Kahr!! Being careful to get the pin to the side of the pin next to the pin hole (not mashing the pin into the hole THROUGH the left side of the spring!), the pin should be inserted with the lever at about 4 o'clock until the ledge-part is at the frame opening, then rotate the slid lock lever to the 3 o'clock position to scoop up the free end of the pin, rather than smashing or bending it. When done correctly, the free end of the pin will lie in the notch and pull the slide lever down. If the pin is damaged or bent, you might be able to carefully straighten it with needle nosed pliers. A spare spring for all of your polymer Kahrs could be handy.

There are many links in the Newcomer section that try to address all of this before tackling and damaging your new-to-you pistol. This info is available in the manual, too... with pictures! At Kahr.com you can find the site map and get downloadable manuals and videos if your pistol didn't come with a manual. There's also a good Frequently Asked Questions section. I list all of this stuff in my welcome to newcomers... and these are listed in several places.

Wynn:)

No question -- the spring is out of position. Reason they bold and underline the "don't overtighten part" is because you have a steel screw being held by polymer threads. Once stripped, you've got yourself a little heartburn....
