I have pledged, publicly and to myself, to make myself available to local schools as an armed "sheepdog" to stand watch over the children. I expect the local school board will reject my offer, but I'm hopeful. There is a greater chance that a local private school would accept the offer, and I will use sick days and/or vacation days to make it happen.
Here's a link to a video I have uploaded to youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQrH2DzbQ5o

I love the idea. I'm sure they will try to get you committed but it's really a good idea.

I love the idea as well, but it's not gonna happen here in PA. I cannot set foot on a school grounds with a weapon, period, end of statement. So much for protecting kids. Everyone knows it's a gun free zone.

Thanks, guys, for your feedback. I realize the GFSZA will make this an up-hill battle, but anything worth having is worth fighting for. I believe the security of the children is worth fighting for.

For the record and regardless of the statute of limitations I never once set foot on our district school property without at least one and usually two guns on my person.
In the early years I usually had a pack of Marlboro's in my pocket too, I got a chuckle out of the tobacco free zone, even smoked some at evening events outside of course but on the property none the less.
Never gave the guns a thought. The elementary principal was a gun guy and I did some work for him and the vice principal too. They would not have guns in their cars on the school property and insisted on transfers in the evening off campus.
And I volunteered at the school nearly full time for a year or so when I first was in the chair, like every day.
Like mentioned earlier gun free zones are free fire zones but not for me.

Florida is a bit touchy about guns on school property too. We had the Christmas play the other day and one of the parents is a cop, parked his cruiser in the parking lot. Yes, it was a Christmas play, it's a Catholic school.
I've been trying to think up a firearms-neutral way to ask the principal if they've been considering enhanced security and seeing what I can do.

dkmatthews I agree with your idea, but I would like to add something to it.
How about having the NRA train volunteer armed school guards. It would be great for the schools and it would show gun owners in a great light.

That works for me, AIRret.
Already, though, I've used my own money and time to be trained by John & Vicki Farnam of Defense Training International through their "Defensive Handgun" and "Urban Carbine" classes, with DeWayne and Elizabeth Saunders of DES Training through their "Low-light/No-light Handgun" class and through the mandatory North Carolina concealed carry class.
I feel I have the necessary training to patrol our schools, but would certainly enjoy additional training.

Love the idea! Good luck with the battle, and keep us posted!
Im signing up for one on one classes with DeWayne Saunders sometime this weekend to try and prepare for the DES upcoming instructor training class. I'm sure Ill be part of their Advanced CWP class in Jan (if I can find some mag carriers in time) and then the Low Light class as soon as its offered after the advanced cwp class (gotta get a light for that one)
Sorry, not trying to jack the thread, just got excited that someone else here has been through some DES training as this will be my first experience with them.

We went to the Christmas play at our kid's church the Sunday after. My DIL is a school teacher and she said they have taken immediate steps to secure the school property during school hours and laying out drills and minor changes such as the yard duty teachers wearing a yellow reflective vest so the kids will run to them in danger. You can argue what good will that do but it's probably better than the kids going ape.
Reminds me of the drills to get under the desk when the air raid sirens went off in grammar school soon after WWII. Like that would make a difference if an atom bomb went off next door. My wife still shudders to recall the fear she had of those sirens thinking the bombs were actually falling.

I still fear those days too. I remember as a kid being happy when all the relatives were around, no idea why that would be any better but we would all go together I guess.
Hated the drills, the stop drop and roll for earthquakes, and doors and desk for fires and such, I screwed that up didn't I. Good thing we never had a disaster or fire, I could have been killed and what would Jocko do without me to harass him? Horrible thought!
