The Journel News of White Plains New USSR, I mean New York, has published a list complete with names and addresses of people with a permit to possess a handgun, these are online interactive maps. Ain't that handy for the criminals, to know where to break in without fear of getting shot (by a handgun at least), or where to go to steal a handgun. I hope they get the hell sued out of them. That's the craziest crap I've heard of so far.
The story is at http://www.wnd.com/2012/12/own-a-gun-we-know-where-you-live/
This is a Christian newsletter, and never had any problems from clicking their links. They want to do the same for surrounding counties as soon as they get the data.

I would have the head of the sherrif's dept if that crap happened in my state. It is an invasion of privacy. Wait until someone's home gets broken into and they slap a giant lawsuit on the newspaper and the sherrifs dept.

This won't be the last list. In Ohio, journalists have the right to access CHL license holder information statewide. And publish it. It was actually written into the CHL law that originally passed. Horribly written law that the state legislature is still rewording and fixing years later. Other states have similar laws, NY included. The newspapers and Sheriff's Depts will not be profitably sued, as they were working within their lawful rights. Still a long ways to go....

Reading on another forum courts in another state (can't remember which) ruled it was illegal to do so and stopped it. I guarantee you one of two things in these godawful states: Permit holders should and will have this overturned or folks will CC without permits - as it is our right anyway. The Ammendments are supposed to trump all other subordinate laws. There was not supposed to be "well, except...."
In the 2A forum, there is a similar thread with a link that lists the journalist that published the permit holders address. It lists her address, phone numbers, interests, and lots of other info including aerial shots and interior shots of her home. You wanna play hardball with gun owners, well back at ya. I love it. POS lib. Wonder how safe she feels.

Glad I live in a state that would noose anyone doing this journalistic trash.

What a surprise! The reporter on the story "owns a Smith & Wesson 686 .357 Magnum and has had a residence permit in New York City for that weapon since February 2011."

I look at it the opposite way. Now the bad guys have a map to all the homes where they will not meet armed resistance.

I know in OH a number of the sheriff's have told so called "journalists" that wanted the information that they were more then welcome to look at it, but they could not have copies, nor could they photograph it so if they wanted "copies" of the information, they would have to sit there and write it out by hand....LOL
I believe (though my be mistaken) only one paper ever printed the information (Toledo paper iirc) and that was right after the state put their concealed carry law(s) on the books.

Wow, this news totally makes me feel uneasy. I don't like the idea of my private information (address and phone number) being published in a newspaper without my permission. I'm not even listed in the phone book. The only people who should know my private info are friends and family. I would certainly sue the reporter responsible, and the paper they work for for printing it. Invasion of privacy.

Good luck with that as it's public information.

Damn.... so it's completely legal for a reporter to do this without permission? Are you sure? I don't like that law, then.

A blogger has just posted all the names and addresses of this papers employees. I have to say, revenge is sweet indeed.

A newspaper in Virginia tried this a few years back. Public outrage initially led to the newspaper voluntarily pulling it after they realized the stupidity of it and the damage it could do. But ultimately, the state passed a law removing the CHL database from public consumption.
So it's only public information if the state allows it to be. That being said, good luck w/ getting that changed in a state like New York.
How about we make psychiatric medical data public. I want to know if there is someone on my street w/ a mental disorder that might cause them to be violent.
How about we publish a database of anyone who purchase marijuana, now that we are gonna make it LEGAL (guns are LEGAL after all) so that I know if there is someone on my street that's maybe gonna stumble in and try and take my last twinkie under threat of violence. I guess that's not fair, pot doesn't hurt anybody (right?). So let's make it alcohol. When you buy alcohol in any 24hr period in a qty that would get you drunk, you have to be entered into a searchable database so your neighbors are sure to be alert to the fact that you might cause trouble.
How about we publish a database of all car accidents. I want to know the driving record of everybody on my street, along w/ their work and non-work activity schedule, so that I'm sure my kids aren't playing in the street at a time when they are coming and going.
Last, I'm gonna need a database of all IP traffic to/from all my neighbors. I want to know who's looking at bomb making instructions and who is looking at legal or illegal porn so I can stay away from them too.
OK, do that and I'm fine if you publish my CHL info.
See, compromise, that's what it's all about folks. That's all the liberals and progressives want, compromise. I can do that.

Not that this should come as a surprise but...
http://news.yahoo.com/york-newspaper-list-more-gun-permit-holders-uproar-120534293--finance.html
And though while I can't speak to the acuracy of the information, one of the comments on the story, interestingly enough, shows that the reporter involved has a NYC Permit to have a pistol in his home and a .357 registered to same
(yet the paper neglects to mention that, surprise surprise, surprise)
