Awhile back I posted about streaks or deposits that looked like leading in the bore of my PM9, but instead was nickel plating coming off. I've been shooting the gun all along with no problems with accuracy or anything else. I finally called Kahr and talked to a fella about it. The tech guy said that it was nickel plating being stripped out of the bore. He said that there's nothing to be concerned about and it will not affect the function, etc. of the gun (which it hasn't). He said that they know a certain amount of plating gets on the bore in the process of plating the outside of the barrel. He said it will eventually all strip out of the bore and that's o.k.. I ask about bore diameter problems and he said that's not a problem. SO, I'll continue to shoot it like I stole it!!!!!!!!!! Thought I'd pass along what I was told.

full of crap telling you that sh-t. Your barrel is nickel plated inside and out, rifling, chamber, outside, 100%. If ur barrel is flaking, it will not hurt accuracy but it is not the way it is supposed to be either. Kahr will replace your barrel no charge. Call kahr and ask for IAN and explain to him wha tis going on, they will tell you to send your barrel back and they will exchange it. You need not send the entire gun back, plus u can send the barrel back regular mail for about $5.
Did you get this fella's name at kahr, I do not doubt what you stated here either, just that I can't believe someone at kahr would make such a stupid statement.
If your barrel is nickel plated and done properly it is a better, harder barrel than just a normal barrel. Kahr has nickel plated their barrel since day one, inside and out...send the damn thing back . It is not supposed to do that PERIOD...All oof our Military M9 beretta's are nickel plated inside and out and there is a reason for that. It is far less corrosion resistant than a steel barrel and much harder and should be easier to clean to.

Me thinks the BS meter is off the scale as well.

Jocko- I was waiting to hear your thoughts on this. No, I didn't get the guy's name. He had to put me on hold and go ask some "tech guy". I'll call back and ask for Ian.
The fella I talked to made it sound like the plating in the bore wasn't necessary, which it's not really unless it was designed to be plated. Which it was. I figured no big deal, but You're right. If the original design was to plate inside and out, then that's the way it should be...............

thats why the nickel plate barrels for corrosion resistant, no t just on the outside but on the4 inside. You have a premier lothar polygonal rifle barrel that once kahr cuts it to length and then does their maching of it, it is sent off to a plating vendor. If the barrel is prepped right at the plating vendor, that nickel plating is far better than just normal steel for reason above. Accuracy wise, no different than a normal steel rifled barrel. A nickel plated polygonal barrel from lothar is consider the "cream do cream" of barrels.
What u hve is a few of kahrs bad barrels that got through the plater and installed on new kahrs only to later start flaking. There was no way kahr could tell if the barrel was bad until it actually started to flake, and I do know kahr will replace every barrel that is flaking, be it on the outside or inside and actually I have not read of any barrels flaking on the outside, just in the bore area, feed ramp and chamber. Send the damn thing back. Paint chipping off ur new car is just cosmetic to and will not hurt anything, but it should not do that either and one should not tolerate that stuff either. to me thats the trouble sometimes calling these gun companies, not just kahr, I have heard of horror stories told to owners by other gun makers that just are totally false.
If you hire me to be a book keeper then I should not be giving advice on how guns are made etc. Not ur fault they don't know jack sh-t either, just kinda pisses me off to hear that stuff coming out of Kahr Inc. :der::der:
Flaking is not a accuracy thing IMO, or a reliability thing IMO, and yes you could continue to shoot it and never have an issue, but the flaking will continue also and even if it doesn't,, in your mind,, you would not be happy about it, nor would that sh-t for brains flake who told you that on the phone either..
I hope u understand I am not happy with that answer from kahr people. Not faulting you in the slightest. Next thing we will hear from someone inside is that "oh yes you have one of very few that has flaked, so it is very rare. Hold on to it, someday it might be worth alot of money""

You guys are killin' me over here.............
Thanks Jocko.......I'm going to call in the morning.
I've had alot of experience with other non-pated bores in handguns, but this is the first plated one. I sometimes tend to let things go....don't push further, and don't give some things a whole lot more thought. I guess I better get my skepticism back up front & center. Must be old age creepin' in.

I'd take a stick and beat on that old age creepin up on ya, didn't work for me but it might work for you. Worth a try anyhow.

I too talked to Ian about the chrome plating coming off my CW9 barrel and he told me it was cosmetic and wouldn't hurt the shooting or accuracy. I mentioned this a while back to jocko and he seemed to buy that to a point. Ian said if it became an issue or I wanted it exchanged to send it in and they would swap it out - no problem. So far, I'm shootin it.
Jocko is a wealth of information here and it pays to heed his advise.

I talked with Ian this morning and he told me to send the barrel up to him for replacement. I just got back from shipping it out. I guess you just have to talk to the right person.

I can't believe he'd even think that let alone have the odacity to say it over a public phone line where anyone could here. I'd say he's a marked man. Perhaps if you'd used his christian name "Oracle" they would have known of whom you spoke.

But we try to do it in a nice way. We're glad you sent off for a new barrel, now we can all look forward with great expectation for the arrival of the shiney new one. Lifes simple pleasures. It's 70 degrees and the suns out today, makes a half man feel alive. Now if I was only shootin instead of worshipping this crystal ball they make me drive. I wanna be a motorcycle cop? Actually I always wanted to be a pro rodeo clown but kind of scared of cows. Definite handicap.

my mk40 elite has less than 500 rounds an the bore is flaking, obviously a bad plating job. my glock has thousands of rounds through it and it cleans up shiny brand new inside the bore every time. i'm losing faith in kahr.

RSS--If it's gonna happen, it will likely happen within the first 500 to 700 rounds.
Eventhough this is in the PM thread, it is the unofficial repository for this issue. Go post your details here if you want with photos-- http://kahrtalk.com/kahr-tech/232-about-plating-coming-off-feed-ramp-chamber-pm9.html
So now we have this issue in the PM9, PM40 and now the MK40. I think this is an issue with all their models. Kahr replaced my bad flaking barrel--no questions asked. I sent it in with a note (no RA required), and I got a new barrel within 2 weeks.

Call Kahr, ask for Ian, tell him about your bore. Send it in per his instructions and you'll get a new barrel. Make sure you talk to him though, so you don't get a run-around.
New Kahr guy here, I have a PM9 just purchased 2 mos. ago serial# starting with IB3*** should I be concerned? I have about 350 rounds and have not noticed anything yet. At what round-count where you seeing this? Otherwise of my MANY other corral of 37 years of collecting and shooting, this just about has to be the sh** for my CCY. Appreciate any input, SYBO

only worry about it when it happens, Your probably good to go, so just go out and shoot it like u stole it. It was never a pandemic thing in the first place. If you get a bad barrel, kahr will stand behind it.
