I am anything but an expert on this, but I found the video enlightening. Also, I found it refreshing that the guy talking about it was a very well-spoken geek.
My apologies if this has been posted already. I did a quick search and did not see it.
It's a video about gun-related crime and other violent crime statistics, and some interesting facts and conclusions that can be drawn from the raw data, which are very different from what is being fed to us while we're being told our guns should be taken away.
What I really like about this video is that it is NOT done by a fat old redneck, it does not have extreme right wing hyperbole, and it is presented in a very level-headed, well spoken manner, yet still with intensity.
This is the sort of video that will get watched by a lot of people who would not otherwise sit through a pro-gun video.
There is one kind of bad spot at 5:54 where he says "homicides that were caused by firearms" and "were caused by rifles", when he should have said firearms and rifles were USED in the crimes. But alas, nobody's perfect.
It would be good for us if this video "went viral". Please watch it, and then decide whether you think it's worth posting on Facebook, twitter, Google Circles, or whatever social media you use.

Very well done, and I was just astounded to hear him say what I think to myself daily: why doesn't anyone take a moment to determine what the problem is first?
Unfortunately, this topic is being driven by emotions and politicians. We can expect neither to be useful in a root cause analysis and an effective, measurable action plan. These are not in the interests of politicians, who are free to take credit for having taken action regardless of the outcome.
I didn't listen to his every word--I'll have to go back and watch it again. But, one great question to ask would be whether ANY gun control laws will be measurable in any way with regard to their having attained objectives. I say this 'would' be a great question--but only if people wanted to know if any actual problems were being solved. They don't. They simply Want to Believe. It's the 47%...the folks who equate Hope with Plan, and Try with Do. Our current batch of elected mutual admirers will Hope and Try to their places in history, and we won't have moved forward an inch as a society.

The liberal progressive democrats aren't about solving problems. They're about controlling the population.

Exactly, and my fear is the weak minded citizens want it to happen. Welcome to the Nanny state.

One of the very real problems is that there are too many people stuck in the middle, not wanting to commit to "either side" because of the hard lines that committed people on either side take, and the intolerant, extreme things they say.
And of course, this is reinforced when people say things like "liberal progressive democrats aren't about solving problems. They're about controlling the population".
This is also reinforced when people say things like "the right-wing elitist republicans want to control everyone with their religious views and keep most of the nation in poverty as serfs while they rule with their millions".
And, presently the only other "viable" (using the term loosely) party is the libertarians, which unfortunately draws out a lot of whackos, so "normal" people don't want to associate themselves there either.
It does nobody any good to be an extremist and say these inflammatory things, and both parties are guilty of doing wrongs against the people.
So let's stop pointing fingers at the left or at the right and start pointing fingers at the issues, and how we can solve them easily if we stop this partisan bullshit and everyone works together. Amen.

This is getting posted on my Facebook! I also can't believe this data hasn't been brought up more, especially the NRA. You'd think it would help there/our cause.
The news media is never gonna release this type of data on a newscast, as it doesn't bring the terrifying affect (ratings) that they just want to broadcast now days.
