CM9 mag dropping free without mod???

I have a new CM9 and the mag is dropping free on its own with no modification. This is odd to me because my last CM9, the mags needed to be ever so slightly pressed in a vise to get them to drop free. Kahr said this non-drop free mag was by design.

Is this a new design for the Kahr mags or is my mag technically defective because it IS dropping free?

I have always found them to be hit or miss with regard to dropping on their own.

Mine did not drop free when new, but drop free now after about 1000 rounds. I personally don't care. It is not rocket science. I don't understand all the cuntinued fuss about it. They can easily be made to drop free or not drop free with about 30 seconds of effort, depending on what you want.

No fuss here, Just wanted to know if they changed the design or if I got lucky.

For those who would like a drop free mag a forum search should show you how, but its pretty simple. Take out the spring and follower and lightly squeeze the mag in a table vise. Just don't over do it!

totally agree, Minehavenever dropped freein my ccw PM9, in as much as I do not carry a spare mag at all. It is a ute point. I would rather it drop the 1/2" that it does if I hit the mag release button by accident instead of watching it hit the floor and rounds pop put all over the place. I am also very fastin takingmy magazine out. Ihave yet to ever read where any owner has been shot or killed due tonot being able toget his magazine to drop freely. It is for some a BIG DEAL. For most , it is what its.

As someone stated, it is fixable with 5 minutes of work, or u can send the magazines backandhope you get ones in retrunt hat do drop free, or u can send mu back again and again.

I like mine just the way it is, MY K9drops freely as most all K9's do and it is my vaity gun and nothinbg more, so it makes zero difference to me if it drops free or not.

I see mag well cut outs on many custom guns, otherthan kahrs, =--Humm i wonder why that would be if they drop free as a bird.

Me neither, even though they do drop free on my CM9. Like Jocko, I don't carry a spare mag so it doesn't matter. And even if I did, it still wouldn't matter to me.

They don't drop free on my Browning Hi Power either and I couldn't careless. In fact, I kind of like it as it keeps me from having to catch them or bend over and pick them up after they are empty.

Now if I was shooting competitively where every fraction of a second counts, then sure, I'd want them to drop free. But then I wouldn't be doing that with my CM9 either. :)

and what about the guns that have the mag releaqse on the bottom of the mag well where u have to manually move the lever out of the way. It is a matter of personal preference, some want to make a big deal out of it, some accept it, kand this fine forum shows a few ways to get the results tha tyou want also.

One of my PM9 mags drop free the other doesn't. If I'm only carrying one gun, which is most of the time, I do carry a spare mag. I load the drop free in my PM9 but what Jocko said has my thinking.

We make a fuss about it because if makes for a quicker mag change if the mags drop free in a SHTF situation.

The standard for the design of the mag release of these pistols is to drop free.

As with anything that doesn't work to an established standard, one can always come up with an explanation (or excuse) as to why they do not, or why they like them just the way they are.

The real answer to the question as to why some drop and some don't in identical pistols is because of quality control. Simply put, the mags are not hand fitted or tested before shipping. Does this save you a few bucks in the end? Probably so. Is Kahr tired of hearing about it. Probably so.

If I were in Kahr's position, I would probably eat the cost and hand fit the mags............at least on the more expensive PM series guns.

To insure that all magazines fell out, the magazine well would have to be even larger and a sloppier fit to allow for variations in the polymer and temperature changes. The mag wells are sloppy enough that a tight grip on the bottom of the magazine can deflect the top of the mag and cause feed problems.

It's an easy fix to make them fall free or even stay in... but you can't please everyone all of the time. Kahr says they aren't supposed to fall free. We see owners complaining about either way! GMAB!:rolleyes:

Just remember... if you're in a bind and have to change magazines, don't waste time trying to put the danged empty back in a holder the proper way! Eyes on the threat and reload as quickly as possible with the gun toward the threat! Don't forget to try to keep from getting shot, too, take cover!!

I don't think this is true. The mags just need to be made with better standards. NO other pocket poly pistol brand I have purchased had these issues with dropping free. The problem is not with the Kahr grip, it is with the mags themselves.

Keltec, for example, may have other issues, but their mags(made by MECGAR) are very good. Now Keltecs crappy follower design can lead to issues, but this not MECGAR's fault.

It isn't a big issue as these mags can be made to function correctly, it would just be nice if they were manufactured to work correctly out of the box. How much more would the MSRP go up if they used MECGAR or some other quility maker?

Anyway, I didn't start this thread to have a debate about the greatness/crappyness of the Kahr mags.

Why would I be unhappy? I got a mag that drops free(just like a wanted). Asked if Kahr redesigned them to do this or if this mag was an outliar as far as tolerences.

No had I gotten a mag that didn't drop free I would have simple given it a little squeeze to make it drop free. No issue.

The day that Mec-Gar or Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines are available for Kahr Pistols I'll buy a half dozen of them.
