View Full Version : 147gr Ranger Bonded jams...

Last week I purchased a used K9 (black NYPD model), and I finally made it out to the range today to test it. I ran 100 rounds of 115gr Remington FMJ through it without a single problem, but when I switched to 147gr Winchester Ranger Bonded, two rounds of the 50 failed to feed.

The first jam required me to drop the magazine and re-insert it. The slide was locked back, but I couldn't get the slide release to work and I couldn't manually rack it. The round that didn't feed was not angled up into the chamber at all. Is this the "nosedive" issue that I've heard about?

The second time it failed to feed, the slide was also locked back, but I was able to manually rack it. This could have been user error--I may have inadvertently been pushing up the slide lock with my thumb while firing.

Both failures occurred on the second round of the magazine, and both times I was rushing (my wife was impatiently waiting for me to finish up), and did not have the best grip on the gun.

You folks here have far more experience with the K9 than I do. What do you think the problem could be? Has anyone else experienced similar jams--with 147gr JHP ammo or otherwise? Is it worth it to swap out the magazine spring with the one from Wolff?

Thanks

Steve

What do you mean by this? What was holding the slide if not the slide release and why couldn't you manipulate the slide? Was the round partially fed?

The first was a nose dive issue and they generally occur on the second round. The second sounds like it was a premature slide lock back. It's not at all unusual to experience a few miss feeds during the break-in period. If the problems continue after the break-in period is completed see the stickies. Both issues have been well covered in the past.

Yes, but that doesn't answer the questions regarding the inability to rack the slide or use the slide release. Two different problems unrelated to a nose dive round.

Probably.

First off, thanks for your help, guys. I'm new to K9 and I'm still trying to learn its ins and outs, so any and all info you give is greatly appreciated.

As to what was keeping the slide open during the first jam, I'm not entirely sure. Like I said, it wouldn't budge at all when I tried pulling it back and pressing the slide release. If I remember correctly, when I dropped the mag, the top round was sticking out slightly and I had to press it back a little bit to get to seat properly.

As far as the break-in is concerned, I'm not sure how many total rounds have been fired through the pistol, since it is used. The finish shows some slight wear, indicating that it was carried frequently. Personally, I only have 150 rounds through it (100 flawless 115gr FMJ's and 50 147gr JHP's with the 2 FTF's).

After further investigation, I think my second jam was caused by the wider 147gr round hitting the slide stop pin on their way into the chamber, so I filed down the area the bullets were rubbing against (http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=6066&highlight=slide+lock+lever+mod). I also did the follower mod, so hopefully my issues will be solved. Thanks again for your help.
