Springfield Armory was showing their newest pistol: the XDS in 9mm.
The new pistol is a single stack 9mm with an obvious emphasis on concealed carry.
The gun is thin and light,
yet is substantial enough for a shooter to hold onto during rapid fire.

I got to shoot this pistol at Media Day at the Range,
the pre-SHOT Show event that puts new guns in the hands of writers.
This Springfield XDS 9mm review is based on my time handling the gun.
Additional details were obtained by interviewing Springfield staff and from their literature.

The gun uses seven round,
flush mount magazines, but will also take extended,
nine-round magazines that Springfield will produce.
With the flush mount, my pinky finger doesn’t quite fit onto the gun,
but with the nine-round mags, I am able to get a full grip.

While this is certainly acceptable,
it would have been nice to have a slightly longer frame
to allow a shooter to get a full grip with a flush mount mag.
Bersa accomplished this in the BP9CC pistol,
and it would have been great if the XDS would have the same grip size.

The overall size of the grip frame fit well into my hand.
It was large enough that I did not feel like I was handling a child’t toy,
yet it is substantially thinner than many other polymer pistols.
I like the feel of this gun.

The grip texture on the XDS is aggressive enough that the gun is not likely to slip from your hand,
yet it id not likely to harn you either.

The front sight of the XDS 9mm is a red fiber optic,
while the rear sights are two white dots.
When shooting, the sights worked well.
I like having a bright, color-contrasting front sight,
and the red fiber optic definitely does the trick.

The XDS frame is polymer; the slide is stainless steel.
Magazines are metal with polymer baseplates.
The magazines have a witness hole for each round,
so you can instantly see exactly how many round have been loaded into the magazine.

The key characteristic of this gun is that it is thin,
making it a good fit for many people’s concealed carry handgun needs.
When I handled this pistol,
I had no doubts that this gun would work very easily in an IWB holster.

Shooting the gun was easy,
and should be familiar to anyone who has shot a Springfield XD or Glock pistol before.
The trigger pull was consistent and the reset was short and obvious.

The gun was accurate and suffered no malfunctions.
I shot several magazines slow for accuracy,
and the gun performed very well.
I also shot two magazines rapid fire, and I was unable to induce any malfunctions.

My time with the XDS 9mm was limited, but not rushed.
I liked the gun enough to put it on my “short list” of guns to buy.
It looks like Springfield Armory is now making their own versions of the gun Glock refuses to make:
a single stack 9mm that is designed for concealed carry.

MSRP was not yet set,
and Springfield expects to ship the XDS 9mm later in 2013.

Thanks, Barth. Rob Pincus teased with an announcement on Twitter, but yours is the first review I've seen. Sounds interesting. One wonders when ANY new firearm will actually be available for purchase!

Thanks for the review Barth. It looks and sounds like a good pistol. I'll look at them when they come out, but I seriously doubt it will replace my PM9.

Looks real nice...it's gonna compete with the S&W Shield. Still, it's gonna have to be one MF great gun to get me to replace my K9.

while i see the 45acp version easily beating out the PM45 i dont see the 9mm version doing the same to the CM or PM9.

nice gun none the less.

Its gotta be smaller than the xds .45 right? If not whats the point? It does have one good thing going for it and that is it holds 7 plus 1. Most "pocket" 9mms are 6 plus 1.

And what is the deal with Glock anyways? They sure are slow to make anything in a "pocket" size arent they? Geez!

ok, i see it as a competitor to the Shield, or LC9 and the like which are similar in size....not the smaller PM9.

Doesn't look like it'd be a viable pocket pistol - just heard my PM9 sound a sigh of relief. As a belt gun I might consider its pros and cons vs. perhaps that of a Glock 26.

What are its exact measurements?

The overall measurments are almost identical to that of the Shield if the XDS9 is the same size as the XDS 45. Which makes it close to the same with and height an 3/4" longer than the PM/CM9. Looks like a great pistol but I'm sticking with my PM9. It's just been to good a CC piece to think about making any sort of trade inolving that pistol. Now Maybe the Glock 26 would be up for a trade if there as good a gun as advertised and the price is not out of this world. Time will tell.

Which actually sucks IMO. I would think more companies would make smaller 9mm to compete with the PM9. That is why I have always believed why carry a .380 when you can get a 9mm for almost the same size. What happened to the micro or pocket 9mm market? Come on!

Point proven. Why can't companies make more micro 9mms like the Kahr PM/CM9? Lets get real. Where's the competition?

No kidden. I was hoping for a small 9 to be announced at SHOT. Nope.

I think Glock is really missing the boat by not introducing something to compete with the PM9/CM9.

I cant believe these "new" guns that they are unvailing. Most we knew about or already out. I think the XDS .45 they have over advertised and reviewed. Its already old imo! :p And why carry a XDS 9mm if the .45 is the same size. More shots? If your good 6 shots of .45 should be enough!

I totally agree with this statement. What is their problem? I still dont understand the politcal issues with the Glock .380 and getting it here in the US. Come on. So stupid!

Cheaper ammo?

I have a Glock 26, but i would not trade it for a XDs 9mm, the G26 is a proven sidearm with years ofproduction, mine has been 100% with any ammo. the G26 is a little thick but i have no issue concealing it, my CM9 is probably going to get the nod for warm weather carry after i get a few more rounds through it, it has also been 100%.
I am done getting new handgun when they first come out always some issue and i don't like being a beta tester with a possible ccw.

Six shots are always enough unless you need a seventh. Was that profound, or what?

There are many guns that fit into the concealed carry niche. Find one and carry it. To each his own.

Wow Muggsy. No glamor, no glitz, no bling. Just plain old common sense. I like it.

I've shot several XDS in 45. They are really nice, but the trigger of the Kahr series is where it's at for me. Won't be replacing my P45 with an XDs. As Mugsy said, to each his own.

I'm not suprised by the size of it, nor did I expect it to be the size of a PM9 once I saw the size of the XDS45. Pretty small for a 45 cal . pistol. What they put out is what I expected from Springfield. Manufacturing wise it makes perfect sense to make it the same size as the XDS45.
