My old klipsch computer speakers finally crapped out on me (amp gave out) and I'm planning on making the sub into a handgun safe. I've taken out some of the internals of the sub (it had all the circuit boards in there). I've already re-placed some of the screws and speaker cord clamps on the back panel and plan on replacing the line in/outs and other screws. I still need to add a hinge to one side of it.

I was wondering if you guys think I need to add some sort of lock to it, or should I not worry about it since it will be very discreet where it sits under my computer desk. Also, is this a semi-bad idea, since robbers may actually see a decent looking subwoofer and try to steal that anyway. As of right now I don't have any sort of safe and figured it would be better than nothing. And since I am renting, bolting it to the floor is not really an option, nor do I want to buy a large safe for just one handgun (I own a 20-gauge shotgun and .270 rifle as well, but those are out at my parent's since that is where I hunt.) Thanks for any and all input.

I think your subwoofer might be an attractive thing for a thief to target - and when they get it home, BONUS! Why not spend $30 or so and get a small electronic safe from Harbor Freight. You could bolt it to your bed frame to make it harder to steal.

Here is the link to their site. (http://www.harborfreight.com/037-cubic-ft-electronic-digital-safe-93575.html)

Also, for not too much, you can get a sub amp for $99 from Parts Express and restore your sub to working condition:

I kinda agree. Most small time criminals target electronics, especially things that go bump bump bump.

Klipsch... I'd steal it if I were a thief! Ditto the idea of a small safe (>$50) or use something that is a crap brand. Cabelas has a nice one for $50. Does Kraco make a sub?

I love the concept and would leave some wires all tangled up in the back to make it life like but agree that some kracko addict would steal it quicker than a gun.

I love the bump bump bump description although I'm more of a bang bang bang kind of guy myself.

Sad the age we live in.

You could maybe wire it to 440 and have barbecued dirt bag anytime someone tried to steal it, course go to prison for that too. And you wouldn't want to forget to throw the switch before you enter yourself? Might smart some.

Enter yourself. Wow, I might have invented a politically correct phrase.

Mr. Obummer, Go enter yourself!.. Maybe a little weak.

Not sure I'm that good. But that's down right clever. Might have to ponder that some.

Thieves are interesting people. My mother-in-law's shop got broken in to this past summer. They broke out a window and climbed through. Whomever went through the window cut himself pretty bad, as blood was all over the place. But anyway, I assume they left in a hurry after getting cut, all they took was 3 pressure washers and old bench grinder. 2 of the pressure washers were bad (bad pumps), hence why there were 3 there! But the funny thing is that there was an almost new Dewalt miter saw sitting on the bench and there was a brand new (still in the box) Felker ceramic tile saw sitting next too it.

Anyway, I think hiding it is the best way protect it from thieves unless you have it in a safe that they can't possibly breech or tote away. I don't care for those small bolt down safes because all they need is a battery operated reciprocating saw and they are either into it in a short time or can cut it free and tote it out. If you put some thought into it, you can come up with really good places to hide firearms. Of course the trouble with that is, that you can't get to them quickly if they are hidden. That's where the small handgun boxes/safes come into play, but they don't protect you from thieves.

I made a nifty gun safe out of my wife's micro wave. Unfortunstely, the thief who broke into my home was hungry and melted all of my polymer frame guns. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, Obama.

Any electronics are a target for thieves. Especially speakers that they think can be trunk mounted.
Personally, I would carefully consider what you put in there, or leave your guns out in the open next to it. I bet the speakers go first.

Well, my gun is magnetic now... The magnets on the two sub speakers have induced magnetism on the barrel and slide of my gun. I'm wondering if this would have any effect on the functionality of my gun.

I have to travel about 20 minutes to where I shoot, so some of the magnetism probably dissipates by then. Short of firing my gun in my backyard in city limits, or taking my sub with me to the range, I don't really have a way of firing it shortly after i take it out of there, which is what the situation would be if i had a home intruder. Nor do I want to try this in case it does something which could damage my gun.

They make several under desk gun holders that work with a magnet. I've often wondered the same thing.

I would not want my gun to be magnetized. I hate screwdrivers that hold the bits in with a magnet. Sometimes they are nice to hold a tiny screw to get it in place but I generally don't like them.

I'm sure the forces of the gun cycling will far override the magnetism but I won't be doing any thing that might make my gun a magnet.

Grab ya a CrossBreed Ohai and a piece of board and some velcro.

I actually purchased a Kholster with the thought to cut it down similar and put some velcro in the van but the van has a nice pocket in the door so I aint cut nothin yet.

I wouldn't worry none too, much. The projectiles and cases are non-ferrous and if they weren't you could probably shoot around corners.

Ended up shooting fine. And almost all of the magnetism has diminished. But I've found an even better spot to keep it. It is closer to my bed and nobody would ever think to look there or try to steal the thing I am hiding it in.

That's right folks, inside a yoga mat that I never use. And yes, I do realize that I desperately need to do some dusting.

Magnetism can be a problem with pistols. Some police have been in a Magnetic Resonance chamber(MRI machine) and their pistols got magnetized and wouldn't fire! That is a "known" problem for Glocks in that case. Our Kahr magazines come magnetized quite often and could pick up the magazine spring and other small objects. I have an old video tape demagnetizer that I used to remove the magnetization from them. The magazines orient to North/South and I floated one in a plastic saucer to show this:
