Is Hoppes #9 safe to use for cleaning my P9 barrel? And what is the best method for cleaning the barrel?

That's what I use for my Kahrs... including my P9's BARRELS. I bought a ported barrel. It's good for the black stuff around the chamber on the barrel, too. A brass brush... or whatever and that work.

Perfectly safe. Just don't leave it in a container of #9 to soak.
I run a patch soaked in sovent, then back and forth a few times with a bronze brush, then another patch or patches till it comes out clean.
Then a patch with oil back and forth a few times and then a dry patch removing most of the oil and your done.
With jacketed ammo you don't need the brush much, many times a solvent soaked patch is good enough.

To the best of my understanding if you soak it for an extended period the bluing may fade. I just started using Elite when my #9 ran out. Will never go back.

I use the Elite or the M Pro 7, same exact stuff a lot too. I still keep old faithful Hoppes around for barrel work.
The Elite is good stuff too. Sometimes you need several tools in your tools in our tool box to get the job done.

I also use Hoppes #9. But I also found that Outers solvent also works, and seems to be a little less agressive re: polymer. Has anyone else tried the Outers ??

agree Hoppes is fine. Why switch it has been around for years. I did readonce and I think it was from Hoppes'even that leaving #9 in a barrel expecialy a chrome/nickel plated barrel can stain the barrel but would do no harm . U don't need to soak any barrel IMO. a good brass brush and #9 will do the job. Lots of good barrel cleaners out there and more than likely they all work the same way. With lead today be used less and less, cleaning a barrel today is a pece of cake comapred to 20 years ago. Just sayin

I use Mill Comm Products. Its non toxic, and does a great job of cleaning, without leaving any residue.
As lomg as you dont let the barrel soak in Hoppes, you'll be ok. The barrel is nickle plated, and the ammonia in Hoppes will play hell with the nickle (actually, the copper UNDER the nickle).

I just looked at the Mill Comm Products and it says it removes organic residues. Nothing about copper. Or for that matter lead isn't organic.
That said I usually clean my barrel with a bronze brush and hot soapy water. That too removes all organic material.
I personally don't think copper fouling is a problem at handgun velocities.

todays jackets are not a problem at rifle velocities either, except for the benchrest guys
fouling was a concern in days when cupronickle jackets were the norm

An old hard-boiled revolver shootin' aquaintance of mine and I were talking about this very thing yesterdy at the range. He told me( as he rubbed his un-shaven chin, blew his nose into an old red kerchief, and reloaded his reliable 45ish year old Python), that all the new fangled stuff is a bunch of crap, and all he's ever used is Hoppes and 3-in-One Oil.:p:D

Waiting for the return of my PM9. Sent it in for repair (almost four weeks ago) as the nickle plating has flaked off on the feed ramp. I called today to check the status of my firearm. Was informed by the customer service rep that the firearm was exposed to a solvent that weakened the nickle plating. I informed him that I clean it by soaking the barrel in hoppes #9 for few minutes and use break free on it. The customer service rep informed me that this was why the nickle plating flaked off.
The customer service rep informed me that they will not cover the firearm under warranty. He informed me that the damage is cosmetic in nature and will not effect the performance of the firearm.
I don't recommend any prolong exposure to Hoppe's #9 on a firearm with nickle plating.
Love the smell. It brings back memories of my youth and hunting with my father.

You joke, but there was a time (don't know if they pulled it or not) but Hoppe's #9 scent came as an air freshener. They were allmighty expensive for air fresheners but still. Friend of mine saw that, said it was just wrong to have the air fresheners, says his wife throws a fit every time he uncorks a bottle in the house.

Upon further inspection, it's still in the catalog.

ur telling us what u did to clean the barrel is gospel , then I would not settle for kahrs opinion on that either. At best I have seen nickel barrels stainedf rom leaving cleaning solutions in a longtime but not eating the finish off. Pure bullsh!tIMO, I would take it up to a higher level.
It might be cosmetic but if it is flaking, then sumpin is wrong, stained I can understand does no damage. christ sakes I have cleaned my kahr barresl for over 5++ years with #9. Most here have to.sometimes customer service has their heads up their asses to. just my thoughts.
We even have replys back from kahr osted in this forumthat states #9 is OK t use but it canstain the barrel if left in a long time. What is a longtime??? bullsh!t.

To be true to the "gospel truth" part, I must mention I put it in a sonic cleaner with the hoppe's 9. Time cycle at five minutes. First time I cleaned it this way. Very dissappointed.

I spoke to a person at Kahr Arms today who was the customer service manager at one time. I told him about my barrel issue and customer service's response to it. He told me this concerned him and he would look into it. I'm hoping for a more postive outcome than what I received yesterday from Kahr's customer service concerning this warranty issue. By the way, he said Kahr does not recommend using Hoppes#9 as it has ammonia in it.
