Here she is - Savage Model 10 Trophy Hunter Deluxe XP in .243. The stock caught my eye and made me pick it up. I was pretty sure I wanted it, then I tried the trigger. It's now my newest gun. I've heard they make stocks out of Walnut and Birch, anyone wanna tell me what kind of wood it is? I'm thinking Walnut....

very nice.

now when are you going to get out the sharp pointy tool and give it a character mark or two... so you'll be able to carry it in the field with no feelings of guilt?

No guilt here! That's the great thing about it! I didn't drop over $1,000 bucks on it, in fact, I dropped less than $700 WITH the Nikon, so I am not too worried about scratching it.

It's definitely walnut. Birch is very blonde although the manufacturers are pretty good at staining it to look darker.

Birch actually is a very strong stock, some say stronger than walnut but not near as pretty.

I've never seen a savage with that nice of a stock. That's a beauty for sure.

oh thats walnut alright and IMO one on the fanciest stocks Ihave seenin a long long time. That gun is just fantastic, I never dreamed they put that nice of wood on that gun. Truly u ave gotten a real beauty, and Ihave no doubt u will achieve 1 MOA also.

damn that is just a super stock on a super nice rifle to.. u did well.

Ilove the grip checkering work.I wuld surmise that savage uses a machine cu checkering on their guns but it ain't stamped checkering like in the old days. They really did it right IMO.
damn I am just envious

I just looked on Gunbroker and Buds and Savages website and I didn't see anything remotely close to that pretty.

I'll have to go back with the correct model number. You'd think they would have their prettiest girls on the website but apparently they sold it to you.

I had a similar problem the first time I looked at the gun. I went back to find it online and can't. It's a 10 Trophy Hunter XP 243 per the box. The tag at Academy had DLX (deluxe I'm guessing) between the Hunter and the XP, but I can't find any mention anywhere of a "deluxe" version of this gun....but that's what I got....I couldn't find any models that had the monte carlo type raised cheek piece on them.

That wood stock is why the second time I looked at the gun (actually it IS the reason I went back to Academy to look at it again. I couldn't find one online with a stock like that), after feeling that 2.5 pound trigger with no creep, and the $650 price tag WITH Nikon scope.....I went ahead and said "I'll take it!".

If u feel bad or guilty about maybe this gun being mistagged etc, Then I will give u $25 over whatu paid for it and get this burden of guilt off of ur mind. I am guilty of alot of stuff, so having this additional guilt on my back is of no matter and u being one of our almighty terminators, I mean adminstrator,I want to remain in good standings. I have paid Bawanna off for so damn long that one more won't bother me.

course u have to pay shipping. Just sayin

My harley riding buddy has the savage model 12flv in 204 caliber kand he has told me 1" MOA is no problem with that gun..

Lol, thanks for the altruistic offer Jocko, but at this point I don't feel bad enough to need to get rid of it....but if that changes I'll let you know....

Sure thing, marked you down for second dibs.....but I wouldn't be holding my breath anytime soon. Seriously though, I have searched for a "deluxe" edition of the model 10 and can't find anything on it...but the normal 10 sure doesn't have a stock like that, not only wood grain, but cheek piece, etc.

ur right I wasjust gonna drop u a line on that. The savage webbsite shows no 10 model with forend caps or grip caps either. butte modl 14/114 certainlyt does and ur looking at $885 scopeless to and frothe photos the wood sucks compare dto yours. Have no clue how u got a 10 model with forend caps and cheekpeace and super grade wood..

I should take close up pictures of the checkering...maybe tomorrow when the sun is out again. The big sections are checkered, but the smaller little sections next to it are actually just really clean lines. It's a really nice pattern put together. All in all I couldn't be happier with this gun.

When I looked at it the first time (Monday) I asked the sales guy about it. He looked in the computer and said it was not only the only one they had at the Springfield store, but he showed me ALL of the other Academy sports stores in their system, and NONE of them had it.

At this point I really don't know what I got. The barrel has Savage 10 on it, and the box, with matching serial number reads 10 Trophy Hunter XP....but it sure don't look like the other "trophy hunters". The scope is a Nikon 3-9x40, so that fits....but other than that...

Maybe it's a Neal family thing. My Dad got his Remington 700 BDL back when I was a wee baby. It was long enough ago J C Penny's was still selling guns. It didn't have a price tag on it, and when he asked the guy how much, he priced it to him at the same as the ADL rifles they had laying there, a couple hundred bucks lower than it should have been. My grandpa was with him and they chatted for a bit and my grandpa told him "If they'll sell it to you for that, you better buy it", and he did. Got a really good deal on a really nice rifle....It appears I may have done the same thing....

Nice piece of wood and steel. My favorite is a .30-06 built for me by my father on a Mauser Mark X action. If yours is anything like mine you'll shoot sub MOA groups from a bench at 100 yards. You just can't beat a good bolt gun for accuracy. That's one beautiful stock.

Beautiful rifle and a great choice on caliber. And to boot, you got a combo with a Nikon! As I said before, the .243 is probably the most underated caliber these days. It will serve you well, I'm sure!

Thanks for the links Greg.

Jocko, While the $35 over what I paid is mighty mighty tempting, as I said in the PM I would just feel awful not even knowing for sure what I'm selling you. I know it's a Savage bolt action, and the barrel says model 10, but I can't find anything to match this. I'd hate to sell you this for $685 and then later find out it was only worth $200....I don't think I could stand the burden of ripping off one of our fine members such as yourself.

That is a beautiful rifle. If you've seen Mugsy's post, you will see that I cannot match Jocko's and Bawanna's generous offers. However, I could sure feel alot of orphans if you felt the need to send me that rifle and a few thousand rounds of ammunition. I would think very nice thoughts in return. :)

Congrats!

Here are some up close shots of the checkering. Really nice work IMO for this price point of a rifle...same with the wood. The more I try to look into it, the more I'm thinking Academy had it labeled wrong....

I'm thinking it was marked wrong too. That's cut checkering, don't even hardly see that now days.

I looked some more and I don't see nothing like that anywhere. I can't believe an employee didn't scoop that up.

Hey Justin nice look in stock I think what you have here is English Walnut.A few years back I had a guy that did alot of competitive shooting he had a beretta over under that he wanted a palm swell put on the stock and that was English Walnut, here's some pics. PS my nerves where alittle on edge working on that stock!@ English Walnut is a beautiful wood and on the high end

Thanks again for the kind words. I found tonight they made a Model 10 50th anniversary model they sold mainly through Cabela's that have stock with the same shape, checking etc....but appears to have a shiny finish. Also on the 50th anniversary guns, the blueing is very shiny, has a gold trigger, gold rings on the barrel, gold filagree on the receiver, and an inscribed floor plate (mine has a magazine)....so I'm still not sure what this gun, other than a nicer than normal Model 10. I'm definitely happy with the purchase and was actually looking at my office today trying to figure out how to hang it up to show it off, because I think it's that pretty.

Assuming it shoots as accurate as I imagine it will, I may just use it instead of the '06 in May when I go Hog hunting.....Just so it can spill some blood and not feel ashamed sitting by the 700 and 870, both of whom have taken many many many lives.

Hey Bawanna
No I did not do the cheek piece on that, that was enough stress doing the palm swell on the stock. The only thing I had close for wood was some American Walnut that was close but still alittle lighter that the English Walnut,I did have to put some stain on it to get in the right color range. If you notice in the last pictures he did have it checkered. It took me around 20 hours to finish that project, which also included many coats of lacquer. Some times I like the challenge, lately I've been working on some mag grips for cm9/pm9 8 round mags, and actually Justin was the only one to respond on my making of a grip. Enough if this I don't want to step on Justin's thread, Justin nice looking rifle hope you enjoy it

JustinN

I really liked your mag grips, cool idea and nice execution. I understand the idea behind polymer on guns, and I've had many a really nice poly gun, but there's just something about wood and steal together that makes happy. Maybe it's the idea that its how our grandfather's grandfather's did it with their guns, and the thought that in a "post apocalyptic" future, plastics would be gone but we'd always have wood and steel.

I really need to get into wood working more. As a teen I always "got" to work in my dad's cabinet shop, but I was building and staining, not much of the fancier stuff, definitely more of the easy/crude work. That shotgun turned out really nice. I can understand how that project would make you really nervous, super nice gun, you wouldn't want to mess it up.

A nice over under is on my short list as well...ugh, I think I enjoy dreaming about what I want more than having the actual money and trying to decide...

I'm slow sometimes making connections. Didn't remember that it was you who did those. Remember lots of times folks are looking but just don't comment. Such was the case with myself. I see the work and the effort required to make those and I agree it's a good idea.
Just didn't really apply to me so for once I get out of it.

I also see what it took to do that shotgun stock too, many many stressful hours making it just right. Often times the person you do it for figures it just lays around your shop for all that time and you did it in half an hour.
That's frustrating sometimes. You spend a weekend doing something and they offer you 20 bucks! Gee thank you so much.

I try to keep my wood playing in hobby mode, be nice to make it a full time supporting job but it just isn't gonna happen and it's probably more enjoyable this way. My satisfaction is making stuff for people I want to make stuff for, that's usually enough.
