View Full Version : Any issues using the longer Hornady Critical Duty 9mm?

I bought a few boxes of Hornady Critical Duty 135gr 9mm and noticed that the bullet is a bit longer and wider at the tip then their standard Critical Defense rounds.
I remember seeing a video on Youtube where this guy bought some Fiocchi .380acp that were noticeably longer then most .380 ammo and caused his magazine to jam up in his Ruger LCP. He demonstrated how this happened and it was clearly the oddly shaped Fiocchi ammo causing the problem.
I was wondering if anyone had any issues using the Critical Duty in their 9mm's? Also, do you feel that this round might be a bit too potent for my CM9?

no problem with critical duty in 9 or 40. your gun is ok with +P:)

I've put 12 rounds of critical duty through my pm9 without an issue. Saving the other 13 rounds for my 6 and 7 round clips. The critical defense is supposed to be better for shorter pistols though. Unless you plan on shooting people through sheet metal or car windows, defense should probably be better for you.

Yeah, it should be fine. I have the critical duty myself, just because the guy who sold me the gun just handed it to me when I asked him what defensive rounds to get. They may have been out of the critical defense as well. Either of them should be fine. I probably won't shoot any defense rounds anymore unless I actually need to, so I may just stick with critical duty, since I already have it

What terrible times we live in! :(

Critical Duty did fine in my PM9 and it's an old blunt nose PM9. I tested both the +P and standard pressure.

Guys,
I asked a similar question recently. My goto SD round has been the Winchester PDX1 147 since it came out. Love the round, and I have a stockpile of 147 fmj range fodder that matches up w/ it.
But...it (PDX1) has become increasingly difficult to find, and I recently stumbled across the newer Critical Duty 135gr stuff. I posted a similar question to what you guys are asking recently and got some good feedback from other longtime Kahr folks here.

I think it'll be fine given the responses in the thread I posted above, but put a box thru if you have the time...every gun is different. I haven't been to the range w/ mine yet, so I won't carry it until I do. But I plan on putting a box thru my 2 Kahrs and my Sig in the next couple of weeks if I get a pseudo-warm day. I'll report back when I do, but there are already a few folks here that have not had any problem w/ it in their Kahr.
I picked up some of both the standard and +P ... so I'll be running a box of each thru.
Regarding the round itself. The few tests of it out there are good, as good as any of the good 147gr SD ammo or any of the good +P SD ammo. So I'm content w/ that. Can't wait to try it out.
Happy Shooting !

I hope so... I have 100rds of it in the locker. My normal SD ammo was Hornady 147grn TAP, which they discontinued... and Midway had some of the 135grn Hornady in stock and ready to ship!
I have no problems with the Hornady 135 gr. 9mm CD in either the non+P version or the +P in my PM9. The feed slick as whale snot. ;)
However, the 175 gr. .40 S&W load will not feed in my G27. This pistol has run 100% on everything I've tried in the past 16 years.

if you like the 147 tap, try the 147 pdx1. feeds perfectly in everything I've run it in...tests are spectacular.

I've only used the +P Critical Duty. It feeds through my K9 just fine. I haven't tried it in the PM9 yet.
