Took My Son and Wife to the Range.

I had a wonderful day today. I took my wife and Son to the range today. It was my wife's first trip, and she loved it. I think it is time to purchase her a little present. She has already asked when can we go back? My son was so cute he made sure he taught my wife all the rules about shooting a gun at the range. I think this will end up turning into a family sport. Any recommendations for a pistol for my wife. I think she will carry it in her car for now but not on person, she does not have a CCW yet, but wants to get it.

Your best bet is to give her a little info on some likely options, let her shoot as many different types as you can maybe by renting at the local range, and then let her pick it out according to her preference. My girlfriend's first pick was an h&k 9mm, I dont know how she knew what would be the most expensive of the several she looked, but I swear she must have a 6th sense for it.

You rock dude. We need more women and kids at the ranges and all over the shooting arena. One of my favorite things is taking kids shooting who haven't been before. An women? Heck any new shooters. Younger the better, that way sometimes I appear smarter than they are, kind get a swelled head.
I got 3 boys lined up for a trip 8 thru 11. A police chaplains boys and he and his wife want to shoot too. Told him we might have to break it down into smaller groups. Or at least take a couple at a time in while the rest shop for new guns in the shop. That works.
Next best thing is shopping for guns for women and kids. Lots of options now days.

Let your wife go with you to a well stocked gun shop or take her to a local gun show and let her decide based on how it looks and feels. Get some advice from a knowledgeable salesperson who can confirm that she can handle racking it if a semi-auto and is otherwise an appropriate choice. I would stick with a 380 or 9mm.

In regards to a gun for your wife, I'm pretty much in agreement with what has already been posted. If there is a range near you that rents out firearms, I suggest you take her there, try as wide a variety as possible and note what she likes/feels the most comfortable with.
My wife shot her first handgun when we were out one day with my 1911. She owns several pistols now, but she took her CCW course with her S&W Model 18 (.22LR) (http://i40.tinypic.com/2mzb4mh.jpg). That said, she doesn't carry concealed, but carries a 1911 in a military shoulder holster when we hike in the desert. She also has a lot of rounds through her Walther P22 and SIG P6.

I would advise getting a quality .22 revolver or semi auto for the family to practice with.

On a Kahr forum and not one person recommended a Kahr handgun???

Seriously jkalantzis, I took my wife to look at a handgun (didn't know squat about Kahr), I had a Walther PPKs in mind for her to get. She looked at several and made her choice (S&W Sigma), nothing wrong with the firearm in my opinion except it didn't fit the need. I convinced her that it was the wrong choice and she went back and chose a Kahr PM9 BUT wouldn't buy because of cost. I then got some info off a couple of forums and we went back intending to order an MK9 because I like steel better than polymer but they had a CW9 and THAT fit the bill and a cost she could live with. She can run her CW9 but has a hard time with my K9.

Like others here have said I think it is best to let her try a few guns hold some and let her pick what is best for her. It is very important she likes her weapon and will use it and wants to carry it. If she is not confident or it doesn't feel good to her she might as well not have one. i wanted to buy my wife a Rami so bad but she told me she wouldn't carry it, so we didn't get it.

She's naming her pistol...thats a good sign! My wife took a liking to my G26 and now calls it Roscoe (old school term for pistol). Ya, she's a keeper too (the wife not the G26).:D I think the cw9 would be a great choice. Smooth trigger, enough mass to sooth the recoil.
Since the wife scooped the G26 I'm gonna need something to complement the PM9. Maybe a TP9 or T9? So many guns, so little money. :(

It would be nice if she could see all of the PM Kahrs, too. Maybe she would prefer the PM45 DLC, with night sights... only twice or so what a CW9 costs!:eek:

Yup. Gotta let her shoot a number of different guns. I'm "fun sized" and love the PM9 because I CAN conceal and/or carry it comfortably. Other women have had trouble racking the slide...so something to consider is hand strength. What a fun project! Shooting lots of guns until she falls in love with one. You're a great guy to encourage her. We need more women at the range. Good luck and report back, please.:)

My son has a Marlin 22 and loves it, but I think he's getting a little tired of the single bolt action. I was thinking of getting him a smith and wesson 15-22 I guess thats what its called. Bawanna I love the idea of him carrying to school except for the fact that he is eight. He has to be at least nine.

Yeah, I guess you don't want to rush things. And what Ms Zena said too. Should have seen my boy the first time we switched to semi auto after single shot. He fired a shot and went to reload, I told him just shoot again, he did and then went to reload again. I said just keep going till it stops. He fired about 5 shots quick and then the biggest grin appeared. Wish I'd had a camera at that moment. I think we had 18 shots in a Glenfield model 60. He was definitely jazzed.

My wife has also just started her journey. She seems to have fallen in love with my P45, though I may have to fight for that one. I recommended the CW 40 to her, and as we have been to a few stores around here that will remain in the running I hope. My little one just turned two this past December, and I have a line on a rifle to start her on as she gets a might bigger. The little pink stocked Cricket reminds me of a long and unfortunately lost friend. When I had celebrated a year on this rock, I was given a .22 Chipmunk, and yes there were many a good time with that little guy. Now I look forward to teaching both of them and to many a hunting trip and range day. As an aside, the last store we went too had an indoor range, and my daughter had zero flinch or reaction to the range noises (there was a CHL class qualifying at the time), this is great because she has been skittish around other noises.

Chipmunks or now Rogue River are great little beginner guns. I have 3 and I've given away 4 or 5 others. Just gotta get the kids into our hobby. They are very accurate and safe. The little ones aren't strong enough to hmmm can't say that, a pull back the firing pin. An when they are strong enough they are near ready to take it to the next level. I've often wished I was rich enough to go to the gun show each month and just randomly pick out a deserving little kid with a responsible looking dad or mom and just give it to em. Maybe some day.

She can run her CW9 but has a hard time with my K9.

Why? Exact same caliber, manual of arms and, if anything, the all metal K9 should be "softer shooting" due to the extra mass dampening out some of the recoil.

I too wish I could do that at a gun show. I don't get many weekends off so shows are a bit of a rarity lately, however, I go when I can. As an aside, my uncle was more a father to me than my own was, I learned much from him and his love of the flintlock, but I do seek and try to cultivate the young ones that need a little guidance. Maybe one of the little protege's will consider me an uncle Tim...
