View Full Version : Time to reconsider shotguns

I have, to this point, refrained from buying a shotgun until I could get a KSG.
However, I must now reconsider whether a good 20-gauge pump with a decent sized magazine might in fact be a really good idea.

Charlottesville, Va. threw out an attempt to ban surveillance drones from the city's airspace. However, they did pass a resolution to not use evidence gathered by the drones in court.
Slippery slope, anyone?
Is skeet shooting legal within city limits?

Probably not. There is a sporting club that includes skeet shooting there, but it's not inside city limits, according to a Google search of their address, overlaid with a city tax map showing the city limits.
Certainly not here either. Not within city limits anyway.
Ok then, is drone sport shooting legal within city limits? That would work.

On a serious note, the 12 gauge is a better choice for drones.

Other than the obvious "more power, more pellets", why would that be?
I figured the 20 would be powerful enough to take down a fragile drone without kicking my ass.

I thought you were talking about the BIG drones like the Predator... with its own weapon system.
You could take a cheapie RC plane and ram it. OR you could use a radio/amplifier on the correct frequency and jam it! Use a directional antenna for more gain.

Drones fly too high to hit with a shotgun. That is one of the alarming aspects of drones inside our borders, they can be so far up you cannot even see them. But they can sure see you. Maybe those small, backpack carried units could be hit.

Coming to a town near you.
What a wonderful country we have de-evolved into.

More power. More lead. What more reason is there?

What about portability? Stealth? For that matter, maybe a suppressed 22 rifle is more suited to the purpose.
But if they're flying too high for shotguns (too high even to see), then it's kind of a moot point.
However, if they are flying that high, their field of view is somewhat obstructed by things like trees, roofs, etc.
I can see how they'd fly that high in more open environments, but I predict that if local law enforcement is using them, they'll come down for a closer look or a more horizontal viewing angle.
I'm thinking more of the quad-rotor hovering kind than the fixed-wing cruising kind.

And don't forget tinfoil. You guys laughed but lets see who all is wearing a tinfoil hat in the months to come.
Might even be a market for them. Mass produced tinfoil hats.

Doesn't most house insulation have a foil layer in the backing?
I know the stuff in our attic is that "popcorn" crap they blow in with a hose. No tin foil there, unfortunately.

Saw on the news where laser pointers (yes regular over the counter pointers) are being used to blind airline pilots and law is tracking them down. Seems it's kids but they face serious charges. Some pilots have had their retinas burned focused on flying rather than look away. Seriously bad stuff.
Forgot my point, maybe such pointers can blind drones. The law will have to buy a big pot of them and so I doubt if they will be the military versions. Easier to bring down.

Consumer grade laser pointers won't have enough power to actually damage the cameras on the drones, it would just produce a lens flare temporarily while the laser was on it.
I actually tested this with my security cameras at my house. I was interested to see whether a home invader could blind one of my cameras while approaching the house, so that I wouldn't have a good record of his face.
What I found is that it's nearly impossible to keep the laser on the camera (very small target) and when the laser was not directly on the lens, the camera could see just fine. Also, it did not damage my cameras.
It is possible that more powerful cameras in drones are more sensitive, but I doubt it. Camera tech has come a long way since the guy on the moon burned out a camera by pointing it at the sun.
I also doubt that new story about the airlines. I don't fault you for repeating it, but I doubt the source. I have read news reports where people did point the lasers at the airplanes, and The Law tracked them down and bent them over - but I do question whether someone could keep the laser steady enough against the cockpit window of a moving airliner to actually cause any retinal damage.
I think this story got its start in a Tom Clancy book, and the equipment they were using was WAY powerful.
And don't forget tinfoil. You guys laughed but lets see who all is wearing a tinfoil hat in the months to come.

We had those back in the '50s.

Geez, am I'm glad that I still have a good supply of shoulder fired SAMs. :)
