When you are going to take to the woods or the duck blind for the entire day, what kind of food do you carry with you? Being a typical southern boy the menu generally consists of a sandwich,a can of vienna sausages or potted meat, hoop cheese, crackers,a piece of fruit and maybe some cookies. How about the rest of you?

What is hoop cheese?

I am seldom hunting long enough to need food, but on my mountain biking trips it is Granola and water. Quick energy depending on the granola mix along with the sustained carbs....

Some Sklenarik's West Texas Beef Jerky, some Saugany Smoke House Jalapeno Beef Sticks, a canteen of water.

Two powerbars and two canteens - one with coconut water (better than gatorade for replacing electrolytes) and one for adding a pack of Starbucks Via powder coffee.

gas grill, two 16 ounce porter house steaks, some good drink, and very little hunting...

Usually power bars or granola bars, easy to pack around. Oh and Canteens? Who carries a canteen anymore, havent you guys heard of camelbaks, or just plain old water bottles?

If you need a hunting buddy, I'm your man!

One of the things I miss most since becoming a professional derelict is hunting. I really didn't care to kill anything but loved walking around in the woods. Just didn't see the use of walking around the woods without a purpose. Hunting was the purpose. Many fond memories. I did manage to slay a mountain goat with my bow and arrow. Truly the highlight of my hunting escapades bar none.
As far as food, I always traveled light, usually a chocolate bar, granola, usually counted on finding a creek many times without success but in washington there almost always a wet spot someplace.
I think Mr. Jocko definitely has the correct setup for hunt sustenance.

At the risk of displaying my ignorance I'm curious what hoop cheese is as well. I think I had some of them sustained carbs on an old mustang I had in High School, I switched to two 2 barrel Webers. Worked very well. Wish I still had that car, worth a shiney penny now days.

Lord have mercy.hoop cheese is the cheese that is sold in old time general stores. It comes in a large round hoop and the grocer cuts off a wedge of it,weighs it and wraps it in butcher`s paper. It smells to high heaven [hence the saying "Who cut the cheese? ] and is as delicious as it is odiferous.{Odiferious means smelly Bawanna.]

I hear ya. I was drug against my will to the NW shortly after the war. My grandmothers front porch in Missouri had parallel finger nail drag marks accross it. One set when the Marines drafted my daddy, and the second, mine, not quite so deep since I was a wee lad, when they drug me out here. I tried without success to get back on a return ticket on the underground railroad. While I still have lots 100's of relatives there, some I havent even met yet I fear it's too late to return to my roots. Talking with people with normal twangs in their voice and the confederate flag in my back window I fear are all I have left. I think we called the cheese pinwheel but not sure why I think that. From this day forward I will acknowlege Hoop Cheese as the proper description. May use it to throw off some of my damn yankee neighbors.

Hey deadhead1971, Those gummi snakes look like they would make good bait for bass fishing....I see you're from Clayton NC (Gods Country)...We have a cabin in Hawassee Ga. right down the road from ya...We go to Clayton to buy beer on Sunday since Georgia thinks buying beer from a 7-11 on sunday is a sin but you can drive to a bar and drink all you want, get plastered and then try to drive home...Go figure that one out....The only thing better is at the Redneck Riviera (Panama City Fl.) where they have those drive through frozen diaquiri stands.......

I hunt alot and spend from sun up until sun down in the mountians many days looking for, shooting, cleaning, and packing out, my Elk.

I always carry plenty of water and a Gatorade in a bottle. I have jerky, a sandwich. Usually a meat and cheese samich, an apple or an orange and about 15 trick or treat milky ways. fast energy when I need it and it tastes great. Gummy snake would work too I bet.

Energy bars taste like butt to me and Granola is for the birds....literally.

If I get one and have to pack I never have enough water.

Dang, maybe it's not too late. You got room for one more down south there? Actually wouldn't be a yankee transplant, more like a return to his roots good ole boy. But it's been a long long time. Definitely have to work on polishing my manners some. If it helps I've used them gummi snakes on bass, lord knows I ain't got the teeth to eat the darn things myself. I'm totally legal like, born in the geopraphical center of the USA, that would be Missouri (not misery) for you folks what don't read maps good.
Let me know, I'll start packin and don't run out of them frozen diaquiri's, don't honestly know what one is but sounds good and goes well with beer?

Come on down Bawanna, love to have ya.....I don't think a frozen diaquiri would go with beer too well but it would be colorful when it came back out!!! The Panama City thing to do for us po rednecks is to buy a 12 pack of beer, drink it all in the shortest time possible then use the empty box for a hat so your head doesn't get sunburned when you pass out on the beach....:001_tt2:

Yall always trying to trip me up on them fancy big made up words, who ever heard a odiferous. I think there was a movie in the old days with a name like that though, odiferous and esctasy, I think it was kind of a modern day take on Old Yeller, but I might not be remembering right.

Well forget them diaquiri thingy's, sign me up for that empty beer box hat party. I can do that! I'll have to practice up some, been awhile. As I recall in some of my visits to uncles and such we did much the same thing with kegs. Kegs don't make too good a hat and sometimes we woke up very very fried, I recall waking up early in the middle of a hard night in the cab of a John Deere tractor, never did figure how I got there, must have been anxious to work or something.

Granted Southwest Missouri has nothing on the Rocky's but when you're riding up a half mile long trail, about a 45 degree incline of loose rocks and roots, it can be a bit more winding than it seems. Around here the rides aren't more than an hour or so, so food is uneeded. But if you head into Arkansas to ride one of the 45 mile loops in the Ozark Mountains, food becomes much more important.....

Do we have elk in MN? It doesn't matter because we have trucks in MN ...... we drive them to Montana. Then we hunt elk. MN has a lot of good hunting Elk is too scarce here for me.

You know I thought of that idea after I asked that, but I didn't know if theere was native elk there or not. Many from Wa drive to Montana for the same reason. We have a lot of elk here as well but apparently not enough. Been very slow last few years according to my old hunting buddies.

I was shocked that we saw no Elk in SW Colorado last December, but that's better than getting a quick glimpse of one as you smash into him/her and it comes through your windshield! I lived in northern Maine for over 5 years and don't recall any Elk there, either. They do have moose... or is it meese for plural. I saw a few of those... one close up on Loring AFB.
I did see a lot of deer everywhere we went and every time we got out of a car visiting someone there were deer wandering around the houses and the streets.
I don't have a picture of elk or mooses, but I have some of the deers:
The fourth is a heart-breaker... the good old days... a bit younger.<sigh>
That's my favorite picture. Taken by timer in Munich during Octoberfest 1984... the best one. Don't hate me because we were beautiful... then. Now... not so much... speaking of myself, of course! Ah, to be young and 38 again... and my wife 28, of course!

I drove thru Yellowstone 2 years ago, probably the first 10 miles I didn't see so much as a ground squirrel. I got to thinking I'm gonna be the first person in history to drive thru here and not see a single animal. Then it's like a switch got thrown, seen alot of everything after that. Wolf, coyote, buffalo, the whole full meal deal. Pretty cool, would like to do it again before we cross the river. And of course hit the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody for about a week. Talk about the ultimate candy store.

Yes! And I'm so lucky that she caught me...er... my attention... and it wasn't unwelcome, though the military establishment had Draconian thoughts about that back then... still does!
Almost 26 years has ridden me a lot harder than her... thankfully! She is ten years younger and that will always be a good thing. She'll be able to feed me and wipe the drool from my chin and change my dia... er... Depends, as needed. I've always joke to her about getting a little bell to ring for those "services" when the time comes, but she won't be able to hear it after she shoves it where the sun doesn't shine!!
She's a very sharp lady and I can't believe she puts up with me. I feel like that Andy Capp comic the other day. She REALLY APPRECIATED THAT.:7: I post them on the fridge:

I always liked playing with fire and things that went boom... or bang... still do!
I've seen her get angry a few times... not at me so far, but I've really tried her patience.:D
She was TDY in Maastricht, Nederlands, for some NATO exercise and I was on break and joined her. The hotel we were staying in locked the doors at night. She had to get up way before daylight and the doors were locked and no one was at the desk. She grabbed the venetian blinds and gave them such a wrench/shake that it's a wonder they didn't come off the door. They were wrinkled a bit. I don't ever want to have the look I saw on her face that morning directed at me! Especially if there's a gun in the house or at hand... which there is!

I "mother" all my range boyfriends by hunting up some food at Trader Joe's ...because I get really hungry being at the range all day. And since I was brought up right, I bring food for everyone. Usually consists of bottled water, organic beef jerky, buffalo jerky, licorice, cookies, pretzels, dried fruit of various sorts, trail mix and chocolate of some sort. Once I figure out someone's favorite thing, I make sure I bring it. And I bring the all-important hand wipes so we don't have to ingest ALL the lead on our hands. I love to shoot but I'm still a girl.:hungry:

As an an apéritif for potted meat I'd suggest a fortified wine such as (in no particular order):
Mogan David 20/20
Ripple
Night Train

As a post meal digestif:
Buckfast Tonic Wine

The last overnight hunting/camping trip I was on saw a great stew at the end of the day:

Day hunts, I prefer a couple of hard boiled eggs, jerky and an apple. Cheese and crackers are nice if the weather is cool enough.

I'm feeling just a twang of jealousy rearing it's ugly head. All my range boyfriends??? I gotta figure out a way to at least be on a slightly higher plain. Perhaps we could be BFF's. Most of the boys here won't know what that means, I had to ask (a girl, don't worry she's nothing special to me) and it's not in Mr. Jocko's book of words and alpha abbreviations. Just in case we ever meet I'm a sucker for Baby Ruth's.

That is a great looking stew, nearly filled my drool cup in just a couple seconds looking. I don't know much about that fortified wine stuff. I do recall but always try to forget an episode with apparently gallons of some I think they called Annie Greensprings. I truely thought the end was near and that the world would never ever stop spinning. Other than a very small sip at one of them worldly wine tasting deals, that was pretty much the end of my consumption of anything grape.
