OK I’m back again with another little project I did for my buddy. Same one that got that Ruger blackhawk. The is his Marlin model 80G he has had since he was a kid (hey I’m still a kid but I’m getting close to 60) anyway we like shooting iron sights though our old eyes fight us sometimes. But on this you couldn’t get your eye down on the rear sight, so I told him one day I’ll make a cheek cut for you. Think I made him a little nervous when I grabbed my big old pattern rasp out and started to make the cheek cut. Not to worry I haven’t killed a stock in my life I said. Now the cheek cut was were we wanted I took all the old finish off, it had a dark stain and lots of scratches on it, some heavy grit sand paper little belt sanding and a lot of hand sanding, he was gone by then the he said he wanted sort of the same color stain on it but when I got done and looked at that beautiful grain on it was quilted birch. They use birch a lot on not so expensive guns. So I wet it down will water and wow it looked great I called him up saying man this thing looks great as is, he came over a agreed. From there I put a hand rubbed finish on it, It’s hard to be me, sometimes I’ll be loading firewood and see a piece that has nice grain to it and stare at it for awhile get back to earth put it in the wood stove. That’s all folks

Once again nicely done. There are some real hidden gems out there. Beautiful wood all covered up with stain to make it look like walnut. I've uncovered a few myself.

Obviously the guys on the production line aren't allowed to cull the beauties and leave them natural.

They do a remarkable job of making cheap wood look nice, don't know how they do it.

I'm not fond of stain at all myself, it's like a box of chocolate, ya never know what your gonna get.

Goes both ways thought to, you peel the stain off and you end up with a plain no character blonde finish, then you gotta help it anyway you can.

I'd say keep at it, your getting the hang of it but it's too late, you already more than got it figured out. My hats off to ya sir.

You lag you lose ya know?

I got that same rifle at home, I might see what's under the finish on it one of these days. My lungs are starting to be too clear from lack of sawdust of late.

That's beautiful. You can do a little project on any of my guns!
