In Terre Haute, In, they city and schools (8 within the city) are gong to hire a uniformed officer (retired with credentials) to be on duty all through the day, at a combined cost of around $300K. Half paid by the city and half paid by the school corporation. To go in effect as soon as it is passed by both organizations.

I agree.....I graduated from a Chicago Public High School in 1969. We always had an armed police officer in the school!

Gun free zones are exactly the problem. The guy who obeys that law aint the same guy who would go in and shoot the place up. The criminal who wont obey that law could care less how much you strengthen that law since he aint going to obey it anyway. Worse yet when the guy is intending to take his own life when someone with a firearm intent on stopping him shows up.

No I think the school would be far better off to allow teachers and other employees to go about their normal day armed. These people need to understand the absolute real need to go about their day armed and not allow anyone to know they are doing so. Female teachers need to know that having their handgun in their purse or in their locked cabinet/desk wont cut the mustard. It absolutely must be on their bodies.

Down here they are called "School Resource Officers". Our high schools have two on campus, middle schools one. Don't know about elementaries.

To be clearer:
If schools had manned metal detectors (like airports) there'd be no reason to call it gun free or anything else, oh and there's armed air marshals on the planes.
it's not the signs or laws that turn away the badguys at an airport.

Most getto (oops, urban) schools have resource officers (thanks,Armybrat) AND metal detectors...so no shootings, again not because of the gun free zone signs.

But the "fake" gun free zones we have at many schools, some movie theaters etc. that are just a sign, don't work except as an advertisement for rampage killers that says "come here."

I live in a small town of about 9000 people and the high school has a uniformed officer at the school all day. The elementary and middle school are right down the road. He may leave if something big happens in town but common practice is to stay at the school 7 AM to 3PM instead of giving out traffic tickets. Just part of life here.
