It's not coming out of the right side. IT is coming out of both sides near the top and is called porting, it is done for recoil abatement.

The actual photo looks to me like a picture of a man shooting a shotgun for the first time. The butt stock rests too high on his shoulder and he isn't leaning into the gun. It's his, "I'm one of you." photo op."
