View Full Version : Tip to remove the slide stop pin.

When you are removing your slide for cleaning on those guns that you can't just push out the slide stop with your finger after lining up the referance marks, here is a tip.
Get a thimble from the wifes sewing box. Put it on your trigger finger and then on the end of the slide stop pin. This lets you use both hands to line up the referance marks. Line up the referance marks on the slide and push out the slide stop pin with the thimble on your finger. This works great and elininates the need to use a screwdriver handle or any other tool to push the slide stop out. Try it, it sure makes the removal easy. :D

I don't like that idea. I love it!
But rather than have to explain to She Who Must Be Obeyed why her thimble is in my range bag, I think I'll go buy my own.

Wife.... thimble...sewing.......?????????????????
I remember 40 years ago when mrs surv and I got married that those three words actually would fit in the same sentence. I wouldn't even dare to ask to borrow a thimble now...
Superb. Sweet and simple.
I felt like a tard trying to keep the marks lined up and figure out what to push the pin with.

Now that I've got 150 rounds through the CM40, I have no problem removing the slide stop pin.
Looking at the left side of the gun, I use my right hand to line up the marks... thumb on the back of the grip near the top, fingers on top of the slide... squeeze, and the slide pulls back.
When the marks line up, I use my left index finger to reach under and push the pin while applying opposite pressure on the frame with my left thumb.
Stiff, yes, but 100% easier than it was brand new and unfired.

Ahhh....just press it against the top edge of the workbench or bonk it with a plastic screwdriver handle. Them thimble thingys are girlie tools.

That's a really good idea. A true K.I.S.S. solution. I've done it enough that I've learned how to hold the slide on the marks and either push the pin out with my thumb or use the base of a magazine to push, (as in the case of my K9, which is impossible to push out with thumb power only).

My PM9 comes out fairly easy now, but tight when new. My Glock always breaks about 6 fingernails! I guess I deserve that for buyin' a Glock.

Mine is tight even after 300 rounds on the PM9 and I have to use a plastic punch. On the other hand the pin comes out fairly easy on my CW45.

It's amazing the differences from gun to gun. I had to use the butt of a screwdriver to get the slide stop started out the first time I disassembled it, but I've been able to push it out with my thumb ever since. Of course the slide's position is crucial. I don't even use the marks on the slide and frame, I look into the half moon cut out on the slide until it's lined up with the slide stop and then just push to through and grab it on the other side.

Since I'm single, well divorced, I have my very own sewing box. I've been using the thimble for slide stop removal for years, along with some other uses that aren't gun related. Because it's such an obvious solution, I never thought about telling anyone. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention. BTW, I use a plastic one to avoid any chance of a scratch.

I hate to brag but I use my tongue!.
This is a great idea though. Sometimes if I'm cleaning several I put a beer cap on my tongue so I guess that might be cheating.
But even tongues of steel need protection.

I think I recognize it, Melissa, is that your hand before they photo shopped the paint job.

Just hold it like this. You can keep the marks lined up all day if you hold it this way, and then use whatever you need with your other hand to tap the pin out. I am always able to just use my thumb though.

Yep, just like milking a cow:D
And it frees up your other hand to push the pin out...or push the gun/pin down against something on the bench.
In the 1st pic you can see the notch in the slide that needs to line up with the lump on the pin lever, so the pin can be pushed out, with no need to look at those alignment marks.
Thanks for posting those pics:cheer2::yo:

Even with chopsticks (one word) or chop sticks (two words) you still need a pusher, be it thimble, screwdriver handle or tongue.
I've used the chopstick for aligning purposes though and it works good.

Hey, that's pretty slick! Just tried it.
Before, I would just keep pressure on the pin with my right index finger while pulling the slide back with my left hand until the pin popped, then let go and pull the pin the rest of the way out. But I never really liked how there was still pressure on the pin when I pulled it.
With this method, I don't have to shift my grip to pull the pin out, and there's no pressure on it.
For people using thimbles or other tools: I can't see why that would be necessary, unless the slide stop retention spring is wound WAY too tight. Mine hardly takes any pressure to break the spring out of the grove, and in 4K rounds I've never had the pin come loose on its own. I wonder if loosening that spring a little would eliminate the need to use tools.
I'm only talking about a CM9, of course. Maybe the pin is a lot harder to remove on other models.

Very light coating of grease on the pin and inside the barrel lug.
"If it slides: grease, if it rotates: oil." OR whatever!

I never knew this was an issue. I bought my p9 used so that could be why. I took it apart before I even found this website or read the owners manual. I didnt know about the little alignment marks, I just pulled the slide back to the half moon notch (ala 1911 style) and pushed the pin with my finger. One hand can hold the slide back while I reach around (he he) and pull the pin out.

Just pull the slide back and stick the tapered end of the chop stick into the breach then let go of the slide and adjust the stick up/down until the marks line up...The stick is wood and wont hurt the chamber breach or feed ramp and will hold the slide open so you can use both hands, your tongue, a thimble or even your little Nemo to push out the slide stop pin......If I was smart enough I would post a picture but you get the idea and if somebody out there has done it and can post a picture it would help explain it better.....

Jokes aside, there are some great hints on here on removing the slide stop. I notice that after 400 rounds on my CM9, it is a lot easier. Nothing breaks things in like shooting the thing! I can pull my slide back with my right hand and push the slide stop out with my left pretty easy now! It was a "Bear" to do before I shot it though
