View Full Version : Fix: CW40 hand racking unfired rounds

Our two new CW40s (225 rounds each) still would not manually eject unfired rounds without the ejecting round jamming. When actually shooting, neither pistol had a problem with ejecting fired brass. Both were prepped as described in the new owner sticky and lubed per the diagram. I just wanted to be able to reliably manually advance a new round in the event of a misfire.

Since I'm a newbie and can't attach pics yet, here's a verbal description of the fix.

Each barrel shroud (top of barrel, extreme rear, right) had a very small burr left over from machining. It turned out to be just enough to catch the ejected round and jam, although the round bounced back from the burr enough to hide the problem. Since our two pistols are not consecutively serial numbered, this may be a common issue. Polishing with a dremel polishing wheel did not remove the burr and emery paper just tore.

So I used a dremel grinding wheel at slow speed to de-burr and followed up with polishing.

Now both pistols smoothly hand rack and eject live rounds with unmodified (but cleaned) 6 and 7 round magazines. I hand rack using the weak hand over the top of the slide rather than the sling shot method.

Well done, Bob! Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you figured it out and was able to take care of it yourself.

I've done a lot of fixing myself, but the Dremel-Like Tool (DLT) can be good or bad. I tried to alter the feed ramp on my first P380 with one of the diamond-tipped raspy things and it was like a super-heated knife into butter! I had to work for a while to smooth that out, but got it working okay. It's my EDC around the house and for yard work... and once in a while for trips where I need max concealment.

I also was using the polish wheel to get at something still in the frame on another pistol... ejector... and that makes QUICK work of the plastic, too! POOF! at 25K RPM!:D They can really help with metal polishing, though. I used a large packaging bubble as a shield under which to work using the polish compound, to keep from getting that stuff everywhere... after getting it everywhere a time or two. I learn as I go... sometimes!:D

It's no fun to have to send your new 'toy" off for repairs, it's great if you're able to correct them yourself. Kahrs are close-toleranced and tight. Sometimes just a touch of stoning, filing, or sanding can make them work correctly!

I took a file and rounded off the top of the ejection port where the bullet was catching and had no more problems. It only seemed to hang up on wide mouth HP bullets. Hardball ejected fine.

I had the same issue with my new CW40. I used a small file and made a couple of strokes at a time on the corner of the barrel hood and then reassembled the gun to check the ejection. After about three times the problem was solved. Then I polished the area. When the slide is racked firmly all the way to the rear, it now ejects a live round reliably.
