I hope this works, it's a copy/paste from another forum I'm on
Impractical? Sure. Novelty? Well, maybe. A load of fun? Hell yes.
I'm looking at building a 10"-10.5" AR pistol in .223/5.56 and I've started gathering parts. I'm starting out with a GT Vector Mil spec nekkid billet lower. Picked it up today at a good price (especially with today's madness) and considering picking up a poly lower as well just to have around, we'll see. Seems to me the upper will be the hardest thing to track down just casually looking around

On order I also have my optics, grip, and pistol buffer kit, and end plate with ambidextrous sling mount. Notice I didn't mention any brands, what fun would that be if I ruined the "look what parts came in!" pics?
This will be my first complete build, I've put an upper on a complete lower and I've bought a complete rifle, so we'll see how this goes. I have a few things in mind for the build but it's probably best if I just post a picture of the general direction the build will go for reference. These both came from fellas over at AR15.com, granted they're both 7.5" builds

My goal is to have it done and running well by Sept. 7th, which is my wedding day (I told you it'd be a slow build, right?). Figured I'd go ahead and start a thread since I'll have parts coming in the next couple days and will have something to actually show. If nothing else, maybe the next guy that builds one can learn from the mistakes I'm sure I'll make.

Not that anyone is keeping up, but I put my lower together today sans grip and selector switch (have to install grip to hold a spring for the selector) which should be in next week at the latest. I used a DPMS lower parts kit but I switched out the trigger guard for a RRA winter trigger guard because I shoot with gloves mostly and I'm going to use the Troy Ind. ambi selector switch. The buffer and tube are a RRA pistol pieces and the end plate/sling mount is a Magpul ASAP. I have both a G27 grip and a Magpul MOE grip coming to see what I like best. I'll probably order my handguard this week and start trying to find the upper I want to go with. For my first time putting together a lower I was really surprised at how well it went and just how easy it is. I'd advise anyone that wants to get into the AR platform, and always changes out most of the parts on their guns to fit their own personal tastes with aftermarket pieces like I do, to go this route and build what you really want the first time. Sorry for the bad picture quality, it's just a shot from my phone.

Nice so far. Keep us updated. I like that first complete one that you posted. Very simple and clean.

These pistols are becoming very popular in my area. Likewise, rolling your own. I'm planning on building an AR as soon as things start to loosen up. Right now parts are hard to come by and are very expensive.

Looking good! I will be watching this thread with some interest as I have been wanting to build one from the ground up.

Thanks bud, I appreciate it. I'll try to keep this as up to date as I can. Right now it's sort of hard to keep things going when even if things are in stock they take 10-15 days to ship.

Dude that's an awesome generous offer, but I couldn't accept. I suppose if worst comes to worst I could take the grip off my rock river rifle, but I won't have an upper for a while so it's no big rush.

I too have a standard grip I don't want/need. Free to a tone that wants it (its listed in the pay it forward thread).
Great minds must think alike!. I started my slow AR pistol build the day after the madness in Conn.
It's my retirement gift to myself and I've got till June this year.
Just have the stripped lower (forget the maker) and a CMMG parts kit so far. Haven't even put them together yet. Waiting on the decided buffer tube (thinking RGuns cause I like the green)
Wanted 7", but after searching out the forums, I think I'm going 10.5" No optics, but I can't decide if I want the carry handle or not. (I was in the service when the A1 was "new").
I'll post some pics of mine if you'd like to compare when I get it going.

Absolutely man, post up progress whenever you get it going. I wanted a 7.5" too but I started reading about all the troubles folks were having so I settled on the 10.5. I'll be doing a flat top for mine, and my optics came in yesterday I need to snap a picture of. I'll probably run Magpul flip up irons as well just as a backup.

Yeah buddy, I like it. The only thing I wish it had is the stippling on the sides like some of the MOE models do. I also started a rifle build and I'll be using FDE furniture and such, I'll post pictures of it when I get it going

Well gentlemen, everyday were getting closer. All I lack now is my bcg, charging handle (bcm gunfighter mod4), and my new handguard with barrel nut that goes with it. All of those things are ordered, just awaiting shipment. As you can see, I strayed a little bit from the 10.5" I had in mind. Found a deal on a 7.5" Aero Precision upper, so I bit. Adding a Noveske KX3 flash hider to try to tame this beast some. These uppers are great quality and I'll include a picture of my favorite part, the American flag on the top rail.
Getting there. I'll wait to mount my optic until I'm done mounting everything else on it that requires it to be in a vise and such

I don't believe anyone is following this at all except me, but maybe someone will stumble over it. She's done, all but my BCG that will be here Monday evening so it can actually fire. I took the ladder rail cover off the receiver rail since these pictures. I put my magpul BUIS on, but the chances of me ever using them are slim to none so I just took them off and I'll use them for the rifle build I have going. I just realized my phone made the foliage green look mint green, now that's kinda embarrassing. Provided this thing goes boom and runs decent I should have a video up soon

i just found this post, man that's looking real sweet! i bet you're getting antsy to take it for a test run?

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm VERY antsy, the weapon is already lubed and ready, just waiting on the big brown truck. A buddy of mine just bought a factory RRA 10.5" pistol, so I'm curious to see the difference between the two. I still may buy a 10.5" or 11.5" upper for this one to run sometimes, but it will be well down the road. As long as I get this one running reliably (no less than 99.9%), I'll focus on my next build which will be a 14.5" rifle with pinned flash hider/muzzle brake to bring it out to the legal 16" mark. Going to try to build a "budget" one...wink wink, nod nod

What a great job and appreciation for your efforts!
I've heard that most custom builds are better than the OEM's with the big names. As they are usually built with more versatility, features and higher quality parts. Anyone familiar with Del-Ton (NC) or Aero Precision(WA)? Thoughts? Opinions?

My upper is actually a aero precision upper. It appears to be great quality man. I read up over on the ar15 site before buying and I didn't find anything negative. Thanks for the kind words!

My customs came from a CT seller who lived in Bawanna Land why the move to the UN Constitutional state... who knows. But he sold just before the new CT laws in order to not lose anymore $ Great deal for both of us!
