View Full Version : My weird gun show find.

While wandering my local gun show yesterday I stumbled across this W.W.Greener single shot 14ga Shotgun. I was intrigued since I'd never seen one before. I asked the man if I could hold it and did so for quite a spell but I put it down.

Later on comparing notes with my son on what I'd might have missed and what he might have missed we both pointed to the far back corner where said Greener was and almost simultaneously said we needed it.

I happened to have enough loot for once so it came home with us. I think we're co owners although I haven't checked the fine print.

My research reveals it's based on the old Martini / Henry action. It was originally built for the Egyptian Police and prison guards. They wanted a non commercial round so if bad guys got hold of them they couldn't shoot standard ammo, hence the 14 ga. It's a bottle necked hull. 12, down to 14. Originally they would just wrap paper or tape around a 16ga shell and they could shoot it, so Greener came back with a 3 firing pin situation with the outer pins having to land in a special primer rim or groove. A standard shell the outer pins would prevent the center from striking the primer.

Enough info, Pictures.

I even found a possible source for some ammo and/or stuff to load some.

I love weird stuff.

I actually had half a dozen people stop me on my way towards the door wondering what the hell I had. Probably could have sold it and turned a profit. Maybe should have but I like her. She's weird.

That's my daughter's momma in an earlier life. She's still pretty warm but not quite that hot.

I thought you guys were into guns around here. Course girls and guns are a good combination.

Nice find. What year was it made?

You seem to have/find some really nice collectable old guns based on some of your previous pictures. They never have anything like that around here.

Uh, 911 please..... Bawanna needs help, one of those outer space dudes stole him.... why do I think that? Hell just look at his work bench! Hasn't looked like that since he built it all those years ago.

I thought the same thing. I wonder if Mrs. B got in there and straightened up? If so he'll never find anything. Getting new grips now will be like trying to find ammo these days.

I get to see some pretty odd firearms now and then but that is the first I've heard of a 14 ga. I know the name Greener as we have a couple of them. I'd love to know what you paid but understand that's really not something to ask.

And I, too, like the old and unusual. I'm talking firearms, here, not necessarily you, Bawanna!

Don't refinish the danged thing! Remember that patina is something special and desired by collectors! I've watched a lot of Antique Roadshow on PBS. I've seen too many things' value destroyed or decreased by a LARGE amount because someone cleaned the danged things!!

No secrets here. The guy was asking 250 for it. I offered 150 being wall hanger basically. We met in the middle at 200.

I was happy when I got home and saw what few I could find going for around 400.

I'm not in it for the money, I'm in it for the weird factor.

One guy said he shoots trap with one, now that's weird right there, I don't care who you are. I guess they made a standard 12 ga for awhile so it would work.

I would give you $250 for the gun....and I ain't sayin' nothin' about Mrs. B's picture in the background. I never even notice it anymore. Nope...I haven't noticed it once since you told me some three years ago that it was a pic of Mrs. B....not once.......maybe 3 or 5 times.....but not once

Lessee... in my computer room... closest thing to MY "man cave"... I have my NRA 100th anniversary of the 1911 Pistol display, my "Mad Bluebird" framed photo autographed by the photographer, AND... I have Bawanna's photo in the chair with the helmet, M14, and service dog! I keep my Wifey pictures and THE video on my computer... on the hard drive... for private viewing! I do have many pictures of her in the directory for the screen saver... pix from a few months or so of age to a few decades ago! Is it weird that I have Bawanna's picture displayed, but no other person's??

I know... I know... it's not like I have an 8"by10" glossy photo signed by the "Great One" himself.

The Gestapo is really going to spend a lot of time with that sweet 14 gauge on their yearly pilgrimages.

Ok, OK, truth be told I had just finished a set of grips made with Bloodwood. Nasty stuff, respirator, toxic, makes ya sick.

There was a mountain of bloodwood sawdust on the bench and I thought it best to clean it all off, I even vacuumed the floor.

So I took advantage of the clean bench to take a picture of the 14.

It won't happen again, I'm sure.

I'll post some evidence photos of the bloodwood later. I did a set of what I call Bobby grips kind of playing around.

Spent a day making some for my K40 but ended up too thin so many hours down the commode on that one, not the first time.

That's an odd shotgun. I love it. Sorry it took me awhile to respond, I was busy hacking into Wyntrout's computer. :)

And just think, that's the one he traded in for the current Mrs. B.!

Huh? Who traded what for the current Mrs. B? There's only been one.

I hung out with a martian yesterday so I have a headache and my ears are horribly deformed, probably why this went over my head.

Any luck with Wyns computer. Do share.

You can get custom made brass in 12/14 gauge Greener Police. It's about $68 for 10 (ouch), but it's just the thing for putting down mutinous Sepoys.

Yeah, I actually found those when I got it home. I would like to find a couple shells for it just to have with it but really don't plan to shoot it much if ever.

Those brass cases are so pretty I almost want them just to make a shot glass or something. Very pretty.

Maybe could trade them for blankets with the indians or something.

I think he does it just to see how many people will comment on it, or to see how far the thread goes before the background photo jacks it.

Actually the truth is those pictures are there all the time. After you get used to something being in a spot so long you sort of don't even see it.

It's become a proof of photo it seems of late. I even remembered once and changed with a second photo and everyone got their panties wadded up so I put it back.

Melissa even photo chopped it and put a doggie picture in that same frame on my websites. She's really smart that one.

IMHO, great find and a great price. I probably wouldn't even have bickered for the lower price, wall hanger or not.

Ah, I misunderstood you earlier. I've got emails into a drab, white 12-story office building run by "Unit 61398" of the People's Liberation Army for assistance on Wyn's computer.

I'll let you know how that works out...
