Guys (and gals), I've got a slight problem.

Stopped into the evil gun shop this afternoon and gravitated to the revolver section as per normal. There in the case was a used stainless steel Ruger Security Six with a 2 1/2" (?) barrel for $400 and also a Dan Wesson 15-2 blued with a 6" bbl with target sights for $450 .

Now I really don't neeeeeeed another gun but they are both calling out to me to rescue them and give them a good home. Really only have the funds for one. Both is very good condition, good lock up, no end shake, etc. No box for the Ruger, box and tools but no extra barrels for the DW.

Which one should I get (and why)? Any and all replies accepted.

BTW - I do have a Ruger SP 101 stainless with a 3" barrel and a S&W 638 snubby.

I'd go with the Dan Wesson. It's a better gun and rarer find. A Ruger is common place.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one but sounds like you got the stubby covered. Always liked how a 6" shot I would say Dan Wesson

OK , I am a ruger revolver fan BUT I am a HUGE fan for DW revolvers. IF the DW 15-2 is in very nice shape it is probably worth the 450 dollars . 425 or 400 would nicer. And haveing the wrench and box is an extra.

Even with the dw kinda smaller size it is a very strong and very accurate handgun.

Plus side of the DW is , You want a 2" barrel ?? Its a 2 minute swap. And parts ar avalible from CZ and EWKarms.

Check out EWKarms for many upgrades and options for DW revolvers at a better than fair cost. 2" barrel assembly is only $135.oo- http://www.ewkarms.com/zen8/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_14&products_id=33

And custom grips at -http://lbcustomgrips.com/?page_id=31

Guess you what I would buy. I have 4 of them.

I'm kind of confused, I started to write just the opposite of what everyone else did. I don't even know if the Security Six is still in production?

I had a Dan Wesson Pistol Pack with the 4 barrels, 2 grips, buckle, etc etc and I loved it. Kick myself to this day for swapping it.

I guess having the options on the DW would be a plus.

The Security six is kind of sweet though too. Better get both.

So did I help much?

Colonel - The Security Six is no longer in production as it has been replaced by the GP100. Did you help..................sort of. The get both is appealing. I passed on a pistol pack a while back when I was just getting re-starting in handgun shooting. PO'd now that I let it slip.

hardluk1 - The gun is on cash consignment and firm priced. Thanks for the input on the EWK site. Not a bad price at all to make it a snubby that will be easier to shoot than my J frame. Evidently, you'd go with the DW :)

Muggsy & Harrylee - So you guys are for the DW too.

Keep em coming.

Since you already have a Ruger SP 101 stainless with a 3" barrel and a S&W 638 snubby.

I have to vote for the 6" Dan Wesson as well (over one more snubby).

(I thought you already had a GP100 4" too for some reason?)

DW also fromol jocko. Have not seen a DW in years. U already have a Ruge,r although not a security six but you also don't have the DW and I would think down the road the security six would be moreobtainable if u think u just gotta have it.

Course no sin in buyin both either.

The DW. Beautiful gun with a barrel length you are in need of.

Eat ramen for the next two weeks and buy both.

I've been eating ramen so long I forget why I was eating it. I've acquired a taste for it. Goes especially well with my half peanut butter sandwich for lunch.

I splurge every couple weeks and pick up a pair of them edible underbritches for desert.

The Security Six more than likely has a 2 3/4" barrel.

I own a 4" Security Six and a 2.75" Speed Six (both in .357 Magnum). I also have a 2.5" Dan Wesson model 14 (.38Spl) and a Dan Wesson 22 with an 8" barrel.
The 22 is a specialty gun, so I'll leave it out of the equation.
That said:
I'd take either of my Rugers over the DW (mine or a 6" version) for carry.
I'd take my Security Six over the DW (6" version) for hunting.
Range games, it would be close between the Security Six and the DW (6" version); as distance increased or from a rest, I'd give the DW the nod.
All are strong, well built revolvers.
The DW has a better single action trigger. I think the Rugers are better double action.
I think the Rugers handle better. I also think they carry better.

I'd get the stainless Security Six, but wouldn't be bummed out with the DW.

Regards,
Greg

Eat ramen for the next two weeks and buy both.

This of course is the correct answer.

we passed on a 6 inch DW (no extras-no tools) tagged at $450 just last week. It was in excellent condition, but came home to try to run down a 2-3" barrel and barrel wrench. Found one NIB 2" on one of the auction sites listed at over $200. My son decided there was something more in line with his needs/wants. I really like the Security Six, but would have absolutely no desire to have one with less than 4 inch barrel ....I'd rather have my 3" SP101.

Go with the DW, it will be a all for plinking at the range or will serve very well for the home.

I have to admit that I've never let a lack of funds stop me from making a gun purchase, or two, or three. Probably why I'm still working at acquiring my first million. Dollars that is. :)

Been doing a little bit of due diligence on the DW and the Ruger.

Greg - you are correct. The barrel length is 2 3/4". I love (ok maybe a bit strong) my SP101 with the 3" barrel and I'm only giving up one round over the Security Six plus I think the SP101 is better for carry having a slightly narrower cylinder. If the Security Six had a 4" or longer barrel, there would have been no hesitation on my part.

So on to the DW. From what I can see from asking prices and sales in the last 6 months, the $450 is a fair price for the gun in its present condition. In addition to that, on the DW forum, having the original case adds another $50 to the "value". From what I found online sales have ranged from $450 to nearly $700 with someone asking $800 at the present time.

Will be going back to the LGS tomorrow with cash in my pocket plus a real strong light and look at both of them again. Now there was a Python and a Mountain gun in the case, hmmmmm! May have to bring more cash :)

+1 ....maybe... Not sure about the underbritches....might. Be worth a shot....definitely both guns.

If you can only choose one, go with the DW

ready to buy and with a nice strong flashlight and a bore brush!

Unfortunately after really looking over the DW found a few things that I don't believe that are quite right with it. First off, the forcing cone in the cylinders looks to have concentric rings instead of a nice smooth surface taper. These rings are quite pronounced and can be felt with a plastic pick. There are also some minor areas of very light rust on the frame and barrel shroud that could be polished out. I cannot take the grips off to look at the frame area under the grips because after looking at the take down tool, two of the allen wrenches are broken and missing and the shim looks like someone ran over it. To replace the tool is about $30.00. The case is original but, it is not the zippered case that is worth about $50.

Since the gun is on consignment, the employees cannot make any kind of deal without speaking with the owner. So it still resides in the case at the LGS. :(

Maybe I'll find a Pistol Pack, ya think?

The Ruger is a Speed Six same as a Security Six but with non-adjustable sights. Since I have my SP101 3", the Ruger also resides in the case at the LGS. Really looking for a longer barrel for range use. May have to go to another LGS and look at a Ruger SA 357 with an extra 9 mm cylinder.
