A new medal for "heroes"... that is HIGHER THAN A BRONZE STAR for VALOR!!

WHAT an OUTRAGE!!

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/81_12746620130220124330.jpg

It should rank BELOW an Air Medal, at most!!

What a crock!

Someone sitting on their a$$ in an air-conditioned trailer thousands of miles from the combat zone can get a higher medal than some poor grunt getting his a$$ shot off in real combat!! WTF!!

It IS sickening! This really cheapens all of the awards below it... Bronze Star (especially With Valor), Purple Heart, and Air Medal... to name a few.

What's next... a medal for Armed-Chair Warriors's "wounds"... carpal tunnel, hemorrhoids, and the like??

And... did you notice that the Marines in the inaugaral parade were not only checked for ammo... but had the bolts removed from their ceremonial rifles??

He should have had an "honor guard" of his DHS State Police and henchmen.

Can we get any lower? I saw some things the last few days, and more and more they apply. Some one here talked about two nations, then there was one on TTAG paralleling the rise of the new slave states. Food for thought.

I am in shock! I understand that it takes a lot of training to pilot drones, but what is so dangerous about it? Nothing! I am in the Aviation Field in the Army and I just don't understand this.

It's all about "feelings" for the last 20 years or more. I remember the "kinder and gentler" PC crowd under Clinton starting developing and issuing pins for every specialty in the Air Force... after I retired in '88... so everyone could have something on their chest... training ribbons for all schools and tours... then the new head of the Army promoted all of the members of the Army to "elite trained killer" status by giving them the right to wear the Rangers' black berets. Wow! Did you see all of the puffed up chests with wannabes strutting around with their jaunty "un-earned" berets!

Now women will be in all combat positions and how many of those can perform to the level of their buddies who will depend on them... to carry all of their own gear into battle... take care of themselves... let alone carry their wounded buddies... or hoist them up through hatches in a flooding ship... when they can't even pull themselves up a rope.

Wah! It's too hard! There are some exceptional women who can do some of that stuff, but not your "average" female. I don't say this to knock women. I was glad to see them get into the cockpit... there ARE "Danica Patricks" who can really fly and fight! It should be based on real ability, not feelings and "equality" of sexes.

Just wait... someone will get new regs passed to mandate a certain percentage of women into the elite combat unit training... as SEALs... with lowered standards, of course!

I only have 3 ribbons I'm authorized to display... that's what I earned, and I earned them fair and square. I don't need some puff medal to make me feel better, my service to my country was enough.

I am concerned about these funky 'made up' medals given for 'combat,' it waterdowns the real deal. They may display nice in public, but the real warriors will know what is BS.

I see this as part of the bigger plan to break down and weaken the military... financially or monetarily... replacing leadership with more malleable commanders, and demoralizing the entire military. This is off to a good start. We don't hear much about Obama's National Police Force as strong as the military anymore, but I'm sure it's progressing. Someone will have to keep the unruly populace in line when enough people wake up and realize that we are just subjects now... not citizens... and we should be happy that the STATE will take care of us.

That they even call themselves pilots makes me laugh. A ribbon sure, a medal, ok whatever. Should be way down the order of precedence though. Over the bronze star and purple heart? That's downright disrespectful to those who put themselves in harm's way every single day that they're out there and I hope every one of them who puts it on realizes that. It sickens me too.

COD is Carrier Onboard Delivery, now flown by C-2s. These fine aircraft bring your relief, your mail and spare parts from shore to the aircraft carrier, which then uses a helo to further transfer such things/people to the small boys in the Battle Group. Actually, lots of other things come and go on CODs, usually pains in the rear like inspectors and Distinguished Visitors... The Navy's Battle Groups could not function very well without CODs. Plus, it's the only way a non-aviator can get a carrier trap and catapult takeoff. Only drawbacks are you sit backwards and you can't see out.

To play the devil's advocate, let's look at awards precedence:
There are only three medals awarded for combat valor alone:
1. The Medal of Honor
2. The individual Service Crosses: Army - Distinguished Service Cross, Navy/USMC - Navy Cross, Air force - Air Force Cross
3. The Silver Star
Of these, the MOH rates as the Nation's highest award. The Service Crosses are the second highest.

So precedence is:
MOH

Individual Service Crosses

Two service/performance/achievement medals are higher in precedence than the Silver Star. These are:
Defense Distinguished Service Medal, awarded solely at the initiative and pleasure of the Secretary of Defense. It is awarded to high ranking military officers (Generals or Admirals), who perform exceptionally meritorious service in a degree of great responsibility with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Special or outstanding command in a Defense Agency or for any other Joint Activities designated by the Secretary of Defense.
Distinguished Service Medal, awarded for exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in a duty of great responsibility.

Silver Star

Defense Superior Service Medal, awarded for superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility.

Legion of Merit, awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The Naval Services authorize the wear of the "Combat V" (valor in combat) device for this award (the Army and Air Force do not).

Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, The Air force and Naval Services authorize the "Combat V" device for this medal. The Army awards this medal only for combat valor.

Distinguished Warfare Medal (the new medal), awarded for extraordinary achievement, not involving acts of valor, that directly impact combat or other military operations

Navy/Marine Corps Medal, Soldier's Medal, Airman's Medal, and Coast Guard Medal are awarded for non combat heroism.

Bronze Star, awarded for acts of heroism, merit, or meritorious service in a combat zone. The "Combat V" device denotes awarded for valor in combat.

Purple Heart, I'd invite you to read this document in regards to it being awarded: http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/documents/alnavs/aln2011/aln11079.txt

While I think the Distinguished Warfare Medal should rank below the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the Soldier's Medal, Airman's Medal, and Coast Guard Medal, it's certainly not without precedence that, even though it's an "achievement" award, it doesn't.

Further, while I think that our troops involved in combat operations deserve our highest respect and consideration, that's no licensee to denigrate other troops doing what they were trained for. There's been quite a few of them injured/killed while doing their duty, all without any medals awarded.

Semper Fi,
Greg

I would be the last person to denigrate anyone's service, no matter what they did or where they served. Each and every servicemember's job is important to the operations it supports. I remember my first months at my first squadron being thanked every single morning by the XO for his clean decks and hot coffee, and he still greeted me by name a year later when he was CO and I was a line rat. He knew what he was doing...

However, while I understand the importance of the drone program and I've never seen a drone crew "at work," I have met a couple of maintainers in the program and I will keep my own opinions of these fine folk and my own order of precedence for respect, thank you very much. No personal offense to anyone of course, but I feel I've earned the right to my own opinions on this.

Maybe I'm just soured on seeing too many "achievement" medals awarded to people just doing their jobs, and yes, I have personally known and witnessed more than I care to recall people injured and killed in the line of duty far from a combat theater... Naval aviation is a dangerous business. I guess we'll just have to wait and see why and how many of these medals are awarded.

Edited to add: Just for the record, my own personal top ribbon is my Good Conduct Medal, given every three years for simply staying out of trouble. I hold my own pistol marksmanship ribbon with the shiny "E" in higher regard, and it ranks dead last... btw the aforementioned XO was the only person who outscored me that year, 238 to 235. I'll probably never forget that guy...

My best friend was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. All that it cost him was a leg and an eye. At the time he told me that with all of his medals and a quarter he could buy a cup of coffee.

That may be part of how we got this problem. The hot air that was thought to be intelligence took with it the head that originated that particular fart, and next thing you know we have a cranial rectal inversion.
Personally, I'm glad this turd is no more.

Maybe "they'll" create a parallel "virtual" award for "virtual warriors".

I just think back to LBJ and his buds sitting around the coffee table and trying to pick "targets" that wouldn't offend anyone... especially the Rooskies or the ChiComs. His favorite targets were "suspected" truck parks... usually clumps of trees somewhere in the boonies with no possible collateral damage... or chance of causing real damage to the enemy!

Our forces were not allowed to target the SAMs and much other military hardware that was unloaded from the ships in Haiphong Harbor... lying out in the open. We should have blockaded the harbors and attacked any shipping that ventured there. That wasn't as much fun for the president as Obama's use of the armed Predators.
